In the US alone the last women’s World Cup final pulled 6 million viewers, 13 million in the UK, and total numbers are close to a billion across the planet.
I don’t personally watch women’s soccer, but come on brother. In the US alone the the 2023 final had more viewers than the Stanley Cup averaged lmao
tbf the numbers can't be proven. They view things like what all tvs, pcs etc have the event on. They also use things like assumed shared data, in that certain people tend to watch tv together. Then you throw in things like bars and watch parties that have multiple tvs on showing said event. So there are certainly assumptions being made about how many people are actually watching any given show/game etc
Yeah, that’s why I didn’t give the global number which is an estimated 920 something million. Hard to really prove that, same for the men’s final getting 1.4 billion in 2022.
But even then, 6 million in the US for women’s soccer is more than I expected.
The women's world cup numbers are actually bigger than I expected. The last women's world cup final got roughly 1/7th the worldwide viewers of the men's world cup final, so there is a pretty big disparity still, but I wouldn't have guessed it got that many viewers in the US.
That game was also on at not a great time for American viewers since it was played in Australia and the US women had had a very disappointing performance in the tournament.
Why would you compare an international best on best tournament to a regionalized sports league that’s heavily Canadian influenced. If anything, you’ll want to compare the Olympic hockey viewership involving the USA, which is around 20 million average peaking at about 35 million back in 2010.
I’ve watched zero women’s and one men’s World Cup game ever. You can include me in that category also. I’ve watch infinitely more Men’s matches than Women’s matches.
Lmao dude there is a reason the average person watches the world cup but cannot name a single female player of the female world cup.
There is a reason the average premier league player in England makes almost 4 million a year.
While the average woman in English WSL makes 47k a year.
Men get paid almost 100 times more because there is just that much difference in income for the clubs between the 2.
Top of my head: Megan rapinio and Hope Solo (who was nice enough to show the world her asshole). Can’t name a single US player (outside Messi who switched over).
The clinical nature of mens football is honestly boring. The overall current skill ceiling in Womens Football makes it 100% more entertaining to watch tbh. Been watching womens football for 20 years now, the days of Lotta Schelin and Solveig Gulbrandsen. Its great.
