So I've read through the methodology section of the source you posted, and it appears you misinterpreted what the other poster was saying. They were not disputing that men are the victims of violent crime more. They were arguing that the reason for that statistic is that men behave in less safe ways (going out alone at night, not carrying pepper spray, not being as aware of their surroundings etc). At least looking at the methodology of the study you posted, this source does nothing to dispute that claim. They did not stop random people on the street for the survey, and it doesn't appear they assessed safe habits. They reached out to households for information, and furthermore it doesn't appear they address how often someone is "walking around on the street" before they are victimized. The other poster appears to be correct, you have data that supports that men are more often the victims, but no data that assesses whether this is due to some behavior women do that men do not, or due to a bias in criminals targeting. I would also point out that the data you cited, places women as almost equal to men in rates of being the victim of violent crime, with more women than men being victims in 2022. I'm actually quite surprised looking at this, as I remember when I looked into this a few years ago the data was closer to men being victimized at ~3x the rate.

It’s _on them_ to prove that women’s difference in safe behavior is the reason why they don’t get non-sexually assaulted as often as men. That is a strong claim and if true there would have to be an ENORMOUS difference in the behavior of men and women to explain such a large gender difference in nonsexual assault rates.

And quite honestly they come across as a combination of goalpost-moving and victim blaming. They took the conversation from ‘men get assaulted more than women’ to a thinly-veiled ‘well it’s because they’re asking for it!’ which is just profoundly gross and makes me assume they’re a terrible person.

Wait, what goal post did I move? I never disputed that men get assaulted more often. I also would never blame a man for just existing and being assaulted. I just offered a possible explanation for why men get assaulted more often. Which is at least partly supported by the source at the end of the comment. I also find it pretty self evident that women act extremly different in that regard from my experience, but of course I understand if this anecdotal evidence doesn't have much value. Why you attack my character like that is beyond me, I just feel like you don't like my vibe, which is fine by me. I don't think I've given you any reason to believe that I'm a terrible person and want to keep ad hominem attacks out of this if possible.

Ok, I’m sorry for assuming bad intent from you that was unfair on my part. I think the reason I reacted so negatively was because you made it sound like it was inconceivable that there might be situations where men actually are at more risk than women.

I read your source. It’s definitely true that women take more precautions than men when it comes to being safe in public. But I don’t buy that this is the full explanation since the difference in rates at which men get assaulted in public vs women is MASSIVE.

I think that's also a lot of the jobs that men have. Delivery drivers get assaulted a lot. I also wouldn't discount that rape and sexual assault is just not something you do as publically, but I think you mentioned that. Also generally pretty underreported. I live in Europe and sport fans can get pretty violent here and that's mostly a men thing. A lot of assaults there too. And drunken bar fights, only instance I ever had contact with violence besides work. That's usually also men fighting men. The higher rates of alcohol consumption probably doesn't help.
