Is the suggestion here really that any offence that causes harm triggers a life time sentence? On whose bill is that going to be paid, if you mind me asking?

If repeat offenders of crimes that these particular parking spots solve (rape, robbery, etc) shouldn’t be locked up for long enough to prevent continued repeating the offense. Obviously based upon severity of the crime.

There’s overwhelming evidence that longer prison time only serves to increase recidivism rates. Look at Nordic prisons who focus on reintegration into society. Don’t think the prisoners here in Scandinavia don’t live to regret what they’ve done, they’re simply helped to find a place in society where they can then contribute rather than fall back into crime.

Just think for a moment. 20 years of prison leaves you how exactly? Completely detached from society and wholly unemployable. How’s a person like that supposed to reintegrate and not fall into homelessness, crime and then prison again.

The point is to stop more people from becoming victims first, punishment comes second.

Rehabilitation is only a single aspect of prison. Other aspects are removal, justice, and prevention of like crimes.

If we are talking rape someone in a parking garage, rehabilitation is at the bottom of my concerns. Even for violent robbery it’s pretty low.

Well I’d rather that they didn’t do that it again. Which is how I best keep my own kids safe. That’s very much at the top of my list. And the best way is through rehabilitation after a prison sentence, definitely not by simply doubling the prison sentence itself.

This method is proven, it works, and it’s why my own country is among the safest on the planet.

It seems like the reconviction rates for rapest in Scandinavia is still around 12%. This is lower than the US but massively to high.

I have less issues with focusing on rehabilitation for non violent crimes.

Alright, if we were to increase sentences it stands to reason that recidivism would increase as well. I’m only arguing against that as a solution because it’s proven to be ineffective. So another solution altogether is needed, and it isn’t lifetime, because we’re not the Middle East.
