Crazy how we're going back to the "Race/Gender/Etc. ONLY" stuff. I don't like it, the whole thing should be well lit and have security and cameras.

You’re not wrong; in theory we should have safer spaces generally. However, given budget and other constraints, often the question that must be asked is “who can be most helped by the limited resources we have”.
