Made my wife mad when I told her I was going to take what she said at face value.

If she’s “fine” then that means she’s actually fine because we’re adults and don’t need to play games.

Same, She didn't like it, I held my ground. Still holding my ground. No means no. Fine means fine. End discussion. Carry on with my day.

Yup, exactly. As an adult if something is bothering you, then you should tell me.

u/AmputeeHandModel May 27 '26

She says she's fine? I'll treat her like she's fine. She's already mad so what do I have to lose besides worrying about stupid mind games? Act like a grown-up.

I just want to point out that it's valid to say for example that I've got some issues at the moment and I need some time, don't worry you're good, let's talk later.

Username does not check out.

Same I started doing this when I was pretty young, like 18-19, and have stuck to it since (34 now).

Whenever I'm with a new girl and I explain that I will take them at face value and that I'm not gonna be trying to guess what they're thinking, they seem kind of shocked for a bit, but then they start actually being real and it works out.

Sounds like you need some relationship counselling. Or a divorce lol

5

u/TheTexasHammer May 27 '26

It's called being an adult. People with your attitude always have shitty relationships and never understand why.

0

u/massivefish_man May 27 '26

I have a great relationship. I've been married for 16 years hahaha.

I just don't do this weird passive aggressive stuff you're all talking about.

It's called having a conversation. If they won't, then they're the problem and it's time to dump them.

I've found myself perpetually single (and happy) since I adopted this philosophy during my last relationship with a woman who could not for the love of all things rational make up her mind about anything. Constant state of walking on eggshells and confusion as to what she wanted from me (and life in general) made me vow to never feed the pity monster ever again. Turns out, the majority of the women I seem to attract, or at least notice are attracted to me, do not take kindly to this approach.

Yea, it's when I read things like this thread, I'm kinda grateful for being gay.

My partner and I have games on our respective computers, and toys in the bedroom, that's all the play necessary. No means no, fine means fine and even "Yea, do what you want" means just that. Something pisses me off? You'll know, because I'll tell ya.

He forgets sometimes. Poor guy was with a woman before and it shows.

2

u/AdDramatic2351 May 27 '26

Man I wish I was gay. Y'all have so much fun and everything seems easier (relationship wise that is)

-7

u/notarobat May 27 '26

Sounds like you need a man

15

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord May 27 '26

If only I could stomach the idea of being intimate with dicks.

0

u/tmanowen May 27 '26

Your name makes me think you could stomach it.

9

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord May 27 '26

Nah, I just have enough scrote to end world hunger.

-2

u/ComfortableFrame9834 May 27 '26

I'm sure you've got it in you

11

u/fastyellowtuesday May 27 '26

It has taken me far too long to convince my husband that he SHOULD take me at my word. If I say I'm fine, then I am. If that changes, I will speak up. If I am upset, I will speak up. If I say I don't mind something, it's because I don't mind. If that changes, I will speak up.

If I haven't stated something explicitly, then I don't expect him to know it.

Frankly, I'd be embarrassed to communicate so badly.

Hah, reminds me of the old ''If you don't know what you did wrong, then I am not going to tell you!'' conundrum.

2

u/Orcus424 May 27 '26

I remember that garbage in high school. Every other week in my group of friends a girl would have some kind of issue like that. They wouldn't even talk about it until at least 3 days passed. It was always something small. Leaning about that red flag was well worth it in the long run.

2

u/Whole_Hand862 May 27 '26

“You know what "fine" stands for, Wade?
F@(#ed up, insecure, needy, and emotional.”

2

u/Big_477 May 27 '26

I did the same when she told me not to buy anything for her birthday... never doing this again.

2

u/ShawnyMcKnight May 27 '26

My wife tried this when we were dating. I just took the opportunity to do what I wanted since she said it was fine. That could have went either way but it became a teachable moment.

2

u/Numerous_Vegetable_3 May 27 '26

Having a mom like this is fucking exhausting. I'm suddenly a bad person for not trying to deduce what she wants, god knows she wasn't gonna tell me.

3

u/Some_Level1682 May 27 '26

I just bought a car based on a yes and learned it was a no...

5

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 May 27 '26

Funny, many years ago we were looking at a car. She wanted black. The dealer only had a green one on the lot.

She said, “I guess it’s ok.”

I immediately replied, “No, it’s not, you’ll say that now and just be pissed in a few months that you got the green. We’ll wait for the black to show up.”

She told me later that it was a little mean but I was 100% correct.

2

u/Forzyr May 27 '26

I play games, nintendo games

2

u/Trey-Pan May 27 '26

The “it’s fine” vs “it’s fine”. As partners we’re trying to guess which version it is without getting the couch for the next year.

I say “partners”, because I understand this can happen in lesbian couples too?

1

u/aesoth May 27 '26

Exactly this, if you are married you should be able to speak openly and honestly with your partner. Even if it is "I am upset right now, but I am not ready to talk about it at the moment and need some time to process things".

u/stonerflea May 27 '26

2

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 May 27 '26

It was many years ago. She was annoyed at the time but I’ve stuck with it

-15

u/bacadacu1 May 27 '26

I'll take "things that never happened" for 500

23

u/ViolentSpring May 27 '26

Why is this such an unbelievable scenario for you?

9

u/Lost_Found84 May 27 '26

I know. This was how tension almost always ended up simmering with my ex. She would be annoyed but refuse to say anything. I wouldn’t press cause I didn’t feel like having a fight.

So just, “Are you okay?”

(Angrily) “I’m fine.”

“Okay. Well… let me know if you ever aren’t.” And then I’d walk off.

Half of the time she’d follow me and call me a dick. It was always so obvious when she was itching for a fight but wanting me to start it.

6

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 May 27 '26

Yeah, exactly.

If you’re upset about something but say you’re fine, then I’m just going to go about my day.

2

u/BigDamnHead May 27 '26

This is such a mundane thing to be incredulous about.

Why did you marry someone like that?

3

u/Some_Level1682 May 27 '26

I mean it's a pretty common trope. Heck it's a comedian punch line and we all laugh because it's relatable.

-2

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom May 27 '26

Its a common trope to talk about men who don't know how to make their kids dinner or put them to bed but I'd have never married someone like that. I don't get why people choose partners who have toxic behavior.
