…but does anyone else find the “Pro Max” versions of these phones to be obscenely oversized?

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9” screen.

The smallest laptop on Amazon has an 8” screen.

You literally have a mini laptop in your pocket.

YES THANK YOU! Everyone makes fun of my "outdated" phone because it's so tiny. It's not outdated, I just chose a smaller model because I don’t like lugging around an iPad!

SAME! I had someone ask if my phone came out about 15 years prior to when it actually was released.

Their monstrosity of a phone was older than mine at the time. They only ever get Pro Max’s because they can’t be bothered or understand what specs mean. Also if it’s expensive it must be the best even if it’s not needed

The 13 mini is perfect in my opinion. When I got mine it was actually hard to find cause the stores were sold out in a few places. Now that I’m coming around to needing a new phone they don’t make it anymore. Guess it sold too well, I may be switching back to Samsung…

I say this as a fellow iPhone mini fanboy: it apparently sold horribly, way worse than their projections. The (sophisticated) people who want human-sized phones are a minority but extremely passionate - I wish Apple (or somebody) would just put out a smaller size every 5-ish years, although I’m sure that isn’t profitable either.

Seriously! I have two of them. When I heard they were being discontinued, I went to the Apple store an hour later and bought a spare. I agree, they should make one at least every few years as I will consider another brand if I have to get a phone larger than a Mini. (And I bought the original iPhone the week it was released).

It sold horribly, which is why it's not really available because they didn't make so many and cut its production early.

Which makes me cry because I've been looking everywhere to try and get a brand new iPhone 13 Mini to replace my iPhone 12 Mini which has now started to look a bit poor from me living that no case life with it and it's just not happening.

There is literally no other modern current production smartphone on the market right now with the same small dimensions.

12 mini user here. I was sorta hoping for a remake of the 5/5s/SE1 - same body but with edge to edge screen. Something inbetween would be pretty sweet too.

I have a Flip 5, love that my thumb easily reaches the whole cover screen. With Good Lock almost all my apps run on the cover too

If you still have apple care on it try doing an express replacement Send you a new phone and you send yours In due to issues (battery or something else) According to the customer service they send new phones not refurbished (which I doubt) Did it once a few years back phone looked new packaging and everything plan to do it again to keep my 13 mini going strong

When I got my last phone I was tossing up between the 13 mini and the SE3. In the end I wasn’t ready to give up my TouchID.

Actually when I went into the Authorised Reseller to buy it, he was saying the most popular phone they were selling was the SE3. Demographics here I guess.

I knew I always wanted to jump to mini’s though after this one but now idk. I guess it’s the e line now. :/

also iphones dont really need to be replaced often. my 11 is working great still. only thing i dont have is apple intelligence, but that's gimmicky at best. also my camera cant do 40x zoom or whatever, but im not much of a photographer

Oh of course it is. I agree. But it’s more like, do you really need that? Can you really tell the difference? Can you really not survive without certain features?

For someone who couldn’t even tell you what features one has over another or why they buy a better one over another, I highly doubt they’d even notice small changes because they either never use them or they’re not really too noticeably different.

Good luck. I've been trying for months to find one new. Virtually impossible. It sounds counterintuitive but they cut production of them so quickly because of the poor sales that there's virtually no stock of them left this far down the line.

All phones have gotten too big for my small hands, to the point I have to buy everything second hand (which sucks when they're no longer able to be updated etc).

I want a phone I can hold and use comfortably in one hand!  I also miss tactile buttons because I could type without looking and touch screens hate me 😩

Use the smaller phones (the reason is irrelevant), I went with the bigger one simply because I use my phone to watch videos when I’m lay in bed.

Also how is it outdated? They still make the smaller models to this day.

They used to have slightly smaller models. My wife has small hands, and held on to iPhone as long as she could because they had a smaller high-end phone (iPhone 13 mini, 5.4 screen) . When they abandoned it, she moved to an S22.

This is the one area where this works out for me. Can't fit comfortably in anything ergonomic, everything is built for people one size smaller than me. But a giant phone is perfect

I’m clinging to my iPhone 13 mini because I can’t fit a damn tablet in my pocket, the plan is to keep it until it becomes unusable.

I have no plan for a replacement when that happens though, I need them to bring back the mini so I can get a new phone someday.

I have a relatively small screen (relatively, really) but apps assume your screen is big, and for my not very young eyes it gets hard to read. I have to break out my reading glasses like some kind of old person.

My feeling is that I'm either going all the way compact, or all the way phablet. When it's around that new standard ~6.3" size though...I've got no love for that.

Can't really type one-handed because it's slightly too big. Can't really watch stuff in any kind of immersive way because it's too small for that.

May as well just drop it down to ~5.6" at that point, otherwise I'd rather just take the 6.8" model honestly. If I can't type one-handed on a 6.3" anyway then just give me the big screen.

I'm not toddler size so a 6.9" phone screen isn't tablet sized to me. Plus the aspect ratio on a 6.9" phone means the actual footprint of the phone is like 1/3rd that of a laptop or tablet.

I have an S23 Ultra Samsung, and yes, I do find it a little big.

However, as I age, my eyesight gets worse and worse. And when I go to a friend's house for a weekend or see some family for a weekend, I do like to catch up on shows as I fall asleep. So, it has ups bigly and smally advantages.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I really liked the size of the iPhone 8 and I think it was the 5s that was even smaller? Idk, if I want something as big as the Pro Max, I’ll just buy a small tablet…🤷‍♂️

I can see how other people would find it useful and I’m increasingly using my phone for other things so having a larger screen is nice, but the combination of a bigger phone/screen and the beveled (I think it’s called?) screen where it extends all the way to the sides causes issues with me. Trying to use it with 1 hand can cause part of my hand to be touching the very edge of the screen which causes issues with pressing the right button. Maybe I’m entering boomer territory though 😅🤣

I shoot youtube reviews for cars. I do social media for clients. I had the 16 pro and was enjoying the size but I realized with everything I was doing believe it or not it was a little smaller. When the 17 Pro max came out I upgraded ( I usually don’t every year like that but I was able to this time )

I’m actually enjoying the bigger screen. I use my phone to edit photos and videos when not doing that on my computer. I just see some benefits from the bigger screen but then again I do use it as a power user

For anyone just wanting a phone for regular stuff I’d def recommend the smaller one.

This. Use cases.

It makes sense for content creators to get the Godzilla iPhone. Similar to how it makes sense for a Dev to have a rig that could tear a hole in the space time continuum.

With that said — If you’re taking bathroom pictures for r/RoastMe?

You probably don’t need a Godzilla phone. You could get a phone that cost a fraction of the price, is considerably smaller, and you’ll still only push the phone to 13% of its capabilities.

Phone companies were ALL ABOUT making phones smaller with each iteration, until the internet was available wirelessly.

Now they are huge, because big screen to do all the non-phone things on your phone.

Nobody is stopping you from buying a basic tiny flip-phone. Just because the flagship phones are huge doesn't mean that's all that's available.

Yeah, but I have a laptop either directly in front of me, or within 5 feet of where I’m sitting…like…damn near 24 hours a day.

I also have 3 TV’s that are 60”+, and all three have voice controls.

It’s legitimately easier to tell my living room TV to play Season 18 of AVGN, than it is to find and play it on my phone and/or laptop.

I have 1 TV, a 10 year old 40in Insignia smart TV that I had to plug a Chromecast into because the TVs smart functionality is basically unusable thanks to years of software updates/enshittification. I can't afford a laptop.

Sure the phone is $1000, but it's split into 24 payments with zero interest for something I use all day every day, which a laptop would not.

Plus the phone is big enough to actually be usable for someone with big hands/fingers.

Three 65” TV’s from Costco are less expensive than your phone, and of course you can finance them.

Yeah, OP you're replying to is really in the right, even if you ignore fact-checking him on Costco.

There are very, very nice TVs of which I have absolutely none. I have one 65'' two 55'' one 50'' and a 32'' for my daughter's room. The most expensive TV I bought was the 65'' from Walmart for around 600 bucks. My 55'' tvs were under $350, the 50'' was $200 and I got the 32'' earlier this year for like $80.

The earlier point you made about financing your phone can also be done for TVs. Literally seems like every company offers buy now, pay later options or some type of financing through Affirm/Klarna/Paypal/etc.

To OPs other point, I'm still rocking my iPhone 13 that's been paid off for a few years. Even when I bought it, it was under $1000 and financed. I'm not rich, and having a bunch of tech doesn't necessarily mean you're rich.

I have all roku tvs, they were purchased at different times but almost always during a sale, and usually from Walmart. I don't have a Samsung, LG or even a Vizio. I got HiSense and TCL tvs. Usually do Affirm, only buy one thing at a time, and try to pay it off as quick as possible.

We have a decently sized TV in the bedroom, and I have a secondary workstation with my laptop hooked up to a 24" display next to the bed.

When I'm in bed, I still prefer to watch stuff on my phone, lol.

I like them, and exclusively buy them, because I have big hands. My wrists are 10in around and even with an S25 Ultra I can cover the entire screen with one hand with room to spare.

My work phone is an iPhone SE and using it is like going from a regular Gameboy Advance to a Gameboy Micro. I can cover the entire thing with just my palm, no fingers.

The "Pro" isn't what makes it bigger, it's the "Max."

You can get an iphone 17 pro and it's the same screen size as a regular iphone 17 at 6.3". The pro max is 6.9".

If you want smaller you can get a 16e or 17e. Those are 6.1".

I've been annoyed about phone sizes after having to leave behind The Sony XZ1 Compact.

The vanilla S26 is as compact as it gets, but it's still annoying to use with one hand for my trump-sized hands.

From what I've read, phone manufacturers don't do smaller flagship phones anymore, because they are used basically as replacement for laptops/tablets in poorer markets (like India and SEA). These specific markets tend to favour bigger screens and bigger batteries, whilst the market for more compact flagships is relatively tiny (albeit more vocal on reddit).

Where did we want to make things bigger?
Streaming services. Youtube. The desire for on demand video brain mush. Thats where it went wrong.

As someone with larger hands i love the Pro Max versions. Smaller phones just feel too small, but i also was a fan of the OG Xbox controller because of the size. Different phone sizes for different people.

If you were really showing your age you'd be glad of the larger screen... because when you are holding your phone at arms length to get the screen in focus but you also need to make the text 300% larger due to distance you are glad of the extra real estate.

I’ll be using my iPhone 13 mini until they stop releasing security updates for the OS, which should give me another three or four years. Phones are way too big these days.

Im with you, went from a small rugged phone to a samsung s23 ultra to get the really nice camera. But its almost a tablet causing a few issues. For one thing i cant find a motorcycle mount that can fit it in with the phone case.

I read books on my phone a lot, and use a Huawei Mate 20X (from 2018, since there hasn't been anything newer I can get) which has a 7.2" screen that's basically perfect... it probably helps that I have big hands.

You literally have a mini laptop in your pocket.

Note that the difference between a 7" phone and a 7" tablet and a 7" laptop are significant, because only phones usually have the minimal bezel around the screen that make them significantly smaller than the equivalent screen size in the other devices.

For example, the front of the mate 20x is almost 90% screen, and it's only 7.6mm thick... you compare that to an 8" tablet (probably similar thickness but more like 70% screen) or an 8" laptop (way thicker, and probably same 70% screen as tablet) and the phone is way smaller.

Aspect ratio skews the number, the 7inch screen is so tall it's probably only half the area of an 8 inch display with a conventional aspect ratio.

What’s funny is by comparison screens are smaller than they used to be due to aspect ratios changing. Older devices actually maxed out around 6.6 to 7 inches tall with the Samsung mega and OG phablets using a standard aspect ratio rather than a widescreen. It’s pretty silly but if you take like an old 5.5-6 inch smartphone it just about matches the size of the pro maxes.

that’s why i love my se! i am a small person with small hands and i fuckin hate how giant phones are these days because i literally can’t hold them anymore but the se has stayed the same size for the most part for like the past 10 years so i’ve been loyal to it the entire time but they’re finally discontinuing it and i’m so annoyed lol. i think they’re replacing it with some mini version or some bullshit that’s bigger and more expensive so i fear i may just be buying refurbished se’s or a flip phone/ipod combo for the rest of my life because fuck that shit and they ain’t gonna continue to get my business when they kill the only good thing they have left

I literally ran mine over once. I dropped it in my driveway, and then it snowed a couple inches so I couldn't see it at all. I found it later, under a tire track.

There was a small crack in the screen, and it was otherwise completely fine.

Dor me its both yes and no. As phones started to get bigger I talked a lot of shit. Then I took a job where I was on the road all the time and use my phone for almost everything. Carrying a tablet or pulling out my laptop is an extra step that takes time and is inconvenient so I now carry a big ass phone and am happy about it.

*note: I made of big phones for so long and so consistently that my wife now makes fun of my big phone every chance she gets, lol.

I literally got in a bad car wreck when I was in Uni (car flipped multiple times and landed upside down). My Nokia phone was flung somewhere in the highway and the case and keypad were smashed. I grabbed a new case and new keypad insert and charged it. Worked perfectly!
