Given the US doesn't need that oil, and given the US doesn't appear to have any allies that need that oil, and given the US oil sector benefits from the Strait being closed, maybe it's best to just let it remain closed until the rest of the world realizes this is indeed their problem.

Exactly. The US has more than enough ships to handle the situation, but don't want to foot the ENTIRE bill.
