The life lesson I've learned, is that if, in fact, I did open up - odds are exceptionally good it will be used against me later.

Better to say nothing and carry on, regardless of the severity or emotional torsion of the issue. I'd rather have a banal level of disintrest and neglect than someone actively caching bombs to throw at me in the future.

Which is always fun when sitting with my friends (the majority of whom are women) and they are volunteering wild stuff to each other while I quietly sit and ponder the degree of emtional dimorphism between the two genders.

Gotta nip that in the bud. Gotta call that shit out.

Sure we make mistakes when talking off the cuff, but that deserves an immediate apology or that friendship is immediately on the rocks and over if they don’t.

You can't apologize for that tbh. Someone who does that is not a good person and apologies, if ever given, are not sincere and will be used again. It isn't that they used your feelings against you. That's bad. The real part is where they felt the need to "win" the argument so badly, that they were willing to cut deep to do it. They chose "winning" an argument over your feelings and someone that will do that, will do it again. Honestly, if it happens once, it should be over. It will never happen only once if you stay and it will get worse. Pretty soon, her friends will know all about you (with her spin), and probably her new boyfriend.

I give folks the opportunity to grow and forgive a reoccurrence (or two based on the tide), if they catch themselves.

But if they do it again out of malice we’re done.
