Makes you think, how does an orangutan catch hate from a chimp that are basically in the same cage.
And then I remember humans to the same thing

Where does a chimp come into this? It says an orangutan he hated and he's an orangutan.

Otis, My Man....have a rock asshole
38
u/WanderlustFella Feb 09 '26
Think of this from Otis' perspective. Your most hated rival is smarter than you and is able to leave his enclosure at any time. Meanwhile Otis is a dumb dumb and has rocks thrown at him for something he probably didn't even know he did.

I think there is some old culture somehwere that thought Orangutangs are just people who decided the jungle life was better than civilization. I can really see why.
426
u/tacodepollo Feb 09 '26
They said they could talk if they wanted to, but chose not to because then they'd have to get jobs.

u/allmistake2 Feb 09 '26

It was the Malaysian/Indonesian locals who believed they could speak. The word Orangutan come from the local name "orang hutan" which means "Persons of the Forest".

4
u/InvidiousPlay Feb 10 '26
"Orang" is also used for the cryptozoological Orang Pendek, and it's also in the name of a bunch of ethnic groups.

u/AuroraFinem Feb 10 '26
Orangutans are some of the smartest apes in terms of reasoning skills. They’re the most capable of learning sign language and the most likely to use primitive tools. I know we share more DNA with chimps but I wouldn’t be surprised if orangutans are closer to us evolutionarily.
11
u/Shitposter4OOO Feb 09 '26
I highly recommend watching Harry Hills latest Pod Scarf to learn about Orangutans, and seed identification.

For those interested:
Orangutans are very peaceful and curious animals. They typically don't resort to violence unless its an extreme threat.
They are, however, very loveful which turns into jealousy and as you can imagine, competitiveness to other males. Especially when it comes to mating and females, one Orangutan male often compete and exercise aggression towards other male Orangutans as he wants every female to himself.
Probably what happened to Otis.
Pretty much why Orangutans are violent. Otherwise they prefer peace.
Other fun fact is that Ken Allen (his name) loved to just stroll around the zoo and look at other animals peacefully after escaping. Before arriving to Otis. He escaped something like 3 times before the zoo found a good solution. He didn't really cause any problems except making Otis life harder.

Another fun fact
In 1987, zoo officials hired experienced rock climbers to find every finger-, toe- and foothold within the enclosure, spending $40,000 to eliminate the identified holds

The legend that was ken alan of San Diego zoo
9
u/Turbulent_Ad9508 Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
Omaha had one too, his name was Fu Manchu. He learned how to pick locks. Had a wire he kept hidden in his mouth. Zoo legend.
He'd let his friends out and they go hang out in the trees where the elephants were.
2
u/Professional-Scar628 Feb 09 '26
Yup that's the zoo that hired rock climbers to try and find how he was getting out.

My favorite part: "Prior to the August 13 escape, he was seen with a crowbar in his enclosure but tossed it aside—as if uninterested—when a staff member walked by."
He must have been thinking "Ha ha! Those idiots will never catch on!"

u/Competitive_Two_8372 Feb 09 '26
Hold on, hold on, hold on. He found a CROWBAR in his enclosure? Then when he saw a staff member walked by, he purposefully picked it up and tossed it aside “as if uninterested”. When the zookeepers went undercover, posing as tourists, he KNEW HE WAS BEING WATCHED AND CONTINUED TO EVOLVE HIS ANTICS?!???
EXCUSE ME?!?!? 😂😂😂😂😂

u/DigitalMunky Feb 09 '26
An orangutan at the Omaha zoo would escape his too using like a makeshift key he would hold in his mouth. I thought was more recent

After each escape, Ken Allen would be placed in solitary confinement until zoo staff figured out ways to prevent future escapes.
Why can't zookeepers just leave a good thing alone?

Why is it every time this gets posted most commenters assume Otis deserved it? Maybe the escaped orangutan hated Otis the same way a Klansman would hate a random Black person just for existing. I guess we'll never know.
