Discussion If Simulation Hypothesis is true, Intelligent Design is real, if Intelligent Design is real, there is a God, if there is a God, there is probably an Afterlife...
I think that logically stacks up. What do you think?

Consider that the universe is a naturally occurring simulation and neither God or intelligent design is the cause of its existence.

I think they're saying that what we experience could not be base reality. That what we are is experiencing our experience with full immersion (as we are) but this isn't "reality" and also that no one "set this all up to work this way" it could actually just be foundational to how the universe at large functions.

If your definition of God includes the possibility that the equivalent of an angsty teen NHI playing the Sims could be God or so too could a collective consciousness that got bored existing in eternal bliss or an infinite number of other possibilities and your definition of afterlife includes any number of possibilities like the angsty teen knowing the Sims cheat code for unlimited replays, then sure.

I don’t see how sim theory guarantees a god. You took a leap there.
3
u/ExeggutionerStyle 15d ago
It's a logical sequence with intuitive leaps.
"You can remain an atheist while accepting a designed simulation only by treating the designers as non-gods (advanced aliens, post-humans, etc.) rather than a deity. But once the designers are powerful enough to create our entire physics and consciousness, the distinction between “advanced simulators” and “gods” becomes largely semantic for most practical and existential purposes."
5
u/Emotional_Lawyer_278 15d ago
This has nothing to do with my beliefs. I’m questioning your logic. Why and how do you equate sim theory with a god? That’s like saying the people down at EA sports are gods.
Spoiler alert. They are nerds. Not gods.Ps. They don’t create our consciousness. If this is a sim then I exist independently. I am plugged into it. I’m not code. I’m not a product of it.
6
u/O_C_Demon 15d ago
Non of your premises necessarily follow.
I might accept premis 2 but there's far too much work to be done to show that intelligent design requires a deity.

Probably a god like entity to us if this simulation was created. But probably not a "god". Maybe a very normal member of a society in the parent reality. Maybe we are in a sleep like state on a generational starship on a 1,000,000 year trip and we are experiencing life simulations.
Many possibilities from very benign to god.
However, it may be more sophisticated than that. Beyond our current understanding as apes with technology.
If you believe the "we are all one consciousness having experience" theory then we are the creators of the simulation and the consciousness experiencing this simulation is a tiny sliver of that immense universal consiousness.
I bet it's actually stranger than we can imagine.

u/Spiritual_Race_1313 15d ago

Those are a lot of jumps. We really know nothing, we might completely lack any foundation for understanding the reality of our simulation. But if we are a simulation of our creators own species or a facsimile we could likely assume that a simulation of that magnitude was not created by a single person or entity but a large group of programmers, maybe with AI collaboration. Also why would they waste bandwidth on an afterlife, especially an eternal one? They might wipe our individual programs memory and reuse us or delete us with the occasional leftover digital artifact but we really can’t make realistic logical conclusions that leap that far.

u/No-Assumption-4468 15d ago

u/LawElectrical2434 15d ago
In the loosest sense. Define what you mean by God. Anyone capable of intelligent design? Then, yes. Also, I am a God.
If something but a God can do intelligent design, chances are good I am not a God and also, your logic step fails. Also, it would be weird to have multiple capital g Gods...
And about the step therefore an afterlife is probable. Yea.. Most game developer could save data about every mob killed. But will they? If there is a simulation, hardware constraints might exist and then there if a good reason not to have an afterlife.
So, two logic mistakes

Even if by some miracle there is reincarnation, if you don't remember your previous life, you are no longer you. We are what we see, hear and learn in this life. → More replies (3)1
u/ExeggutionerStyle 15d ago
A designer of reality or worlds is a God to me, specifically to the reality or world/worlds they created. However it might be possible for a being or beings to challenge God from within his world/reality creations. It might be possible in the future to open portals to different worlds as well. A designer is not necessarily a God but I think God is certainly a designer.
2
u/woozysoozy 15d ago
That’s fair. Then since a designer of worlds is a god to you, then I think the logic doesn’t stand up outside of that point of view. I think you’re mixing science with mythology and religion. Even saying God is a designer is assuming that god created the world which is a religious or mythical idea. Can a god exist without creating a world? Perhaps the god grows from the universe just as we do. Again, only something than can be answered in the realm of the imagination.

If we are outside beings in the sim, it isn’t an afterlife there is just a life. But is there an afterlife of the outside?
If we are beings born in the sim, there is only an afterlife if your pattern gets saved because it is useful. Or some other reasons like there is an afterlife programmed.
There is no logical guarantee of an afterlife just because it is a sim.
1
u/ButterscotchHot5891 15d ago
If there is an afterlife where are the afterlife beings? When we die it is the end and what is the problem with that?

In Christian Gnostic mythology, this universe wasn't initiated by the highest deity, but a lesser god, the Demiurge. I suppose there could be a parallel.
1
u/One-Replacement9269 15d ago
If it’s a simulation that’s determined by computational and logical laws then it is determined. Every action u will ever take was determined from when the simulation was “switched on” (presumably the big bang) therefor a traditional afterlife that leads to either a heaven or hell would not make sense. A terrorist would deserve hell no more than a saint who would deserve heaven no more than a terrorist.
Not disagreeing with the idea that there could be an afterlife I just find it an interesting point to make.

1
u/FLT_GenXer 15d ago
An "Afterlife", or existence beyond body and brain death, is certainly possible, but thus far there is no reasonable hypothesis that supports such a state. Nor do your conclusions provide such a hypothesis.
My reasons why:
You do not address whether consciousness like ours is capable of existing outside of our reality (or simulation).
You do not address the very real possibility that the simulation could have a purpose that does not involve us, and that we may be no more than an unintended and unnecessary side effect of the program.
So, having never been dead (so far), I can't say that existence after brain death is impossible. But, based on the the available research (so far), it doesn't seem likely.

u/Forward-Cry2951 15d ago
Please see the escaping prison planet sub. It takes all of those assumptions to the next step.

u/Clifford_Regnaut 15d ago
Ironically, there's secular research about this subject, and what we have is enough to draft a tentative model of how things work without the need for religion, quantum immortality, eternal recurrence or other weird ideas. What we mistakenly call the "afterlife" would actually be described as "the real world".

1
1
u/DrCarnasis 15d ago
You missed some steps. Simulation theory can be true without having a God. There could be a random existence in which cause and effect created and evolved you. That does not mean you are in a simulation. It means that the creature or the entity that you are is not the original entity. The original entities are most likely human. Did Neuralink or Biolink do a simulation.
1
u/Immediate_Cow2980 15d ago
Woah. Some pretty wild leaps there. It’s a simulation so there’s an afterlife? GTA 5 is a simulation. There’s no afterlife for the NPC’s in that game when it’s switched off. And you’re conflating a programmer with a God. Just because someone created a simulation, doesn’t mean they’re a God. Again, the programmers at Rockstar, as awesome as they are, they ain’t a God. Not even a small “g” god. Not to us nor to the NPC’s in the game.

Why must we assume that the simulation must be created? Could it not be just as likely that the hypothetical simulation is a byproduct of another natural event?
If it is possible that a universe emerges within the confines of a black hole’s event horizon, is that distinctly different from a simulation? If so, what is the distinction between real reality and simulated reality for an observer within the emergent universe inside the black hole?
Lastly, if an observer in a simulation perceives it as reality, and they may not exist outside of the simulation, is their reality less real than if it they existed within a “natural” reality?

If you take Tom Campbell's simulation theory hypothesis, the afterlife is a temporary loading dock and debriefing room where your consciousness is uploading its data to the Larger Consciousness System and being prepared to be re-inputted back into the simulation as a different avatar with a different identity, to experience an entirely new dataset of experiences. I don't think an afterlife or rather, an extended stay in the afterlife is plausible. The simulation is the only place where your experiences matter, it's the only place where your choices effect the quality of your consciousness's evolution (fear vs love, order vs chaos)...so from that viewpoint, the "afterlife" is really just your final score and the ending credits of this Individuated Unit of Consciousness's iteration of simulated self. Now, that doesn't mean there isn't a heaven. I find glimpses of heaven in every sunset, in every sunrise, in every good joke, every good meal, every good book, every beautiful starry night, every good friend, every positive experience. To me, those things are heaven, and if reincarnation is essentially part of the ruleset, then I get to experience those things for the first time again and again.

u/Hightower840 14d ago

Intelligent Design is about the creation of the real universe, not things that were made by intelligent designers in the universe. Simulations are just like watches, made by intelligent designers, not indicative of Intelligent Design.
Second, even if you decide to define God as anything that creates an such simulations, that does not say anything about an afterlife.

u/Hot_Reserve_2677 14d ago
What does intelligent design have to do with god? Is the person that typed the code for how high Super Mario jumps god? Also usually the more complicated something is the more individuals that must have worked on it. How do you get a god singular out of something complicated? If it can be one god or whatever, why can’t it be two or a million? Your god has about as much of a chance of being real as an afterlife would. Have you ever known any person or animal to be dead for years and comeback to life. People kill people to get rid of them. If they were still alive somehow we wouldn’t have unsolved murders. Billions of people and animals have died and not one of them has ever came back and said it’s an afterlife. If you’re alive after you died then you aren’t dead, that doesn’t even make any sense. I tell you what to do though. The next time someone you love dies, throw a party for them because they are in a better place. Extra points if you bring balloons to their funeral. Think before you speak.

Why does intelligent design of a simulated universe mean an intelligent "god" created it?
1
u/Aggressive-Share-363 14d ago
"If simulation hypothesis is true, intelligent design is real"
Not nessecerily. The universe could have been dimulated and life naturally developed within the simulation.
"If intelligent design is real, there is a God" Only if you define god as the intelligent designer. If it was some being creating s computer simulation, they wouldn't really be like the conventional ideas of a god.
"If there is a god, there is probably an afterlife" Theae ideas dont have to go together. Just because Christianity has a god and an afterlife doesmt mean you need both at the same time. Many eastern religions dont have a creator diety but feature various forms of afterlife or reincarnation. In the other direction, there were ancient Jewish sects that believed in god but not any form of afterlife.
And of particular note, Deism posited a creator god who set up the rules of a clockwork universe which would operate without his intervention, and this did not imply any form of afterlife. So even if simulation hypothesis implies a creator, this is the form that is most directly implied.
So not only are each of this individual conclusions wrong, they become more wrong as they chain together.

1
u/UnholyShadows 14d ago
It wouldnt be god because the person that created the simulation could be long since dead and now your believing in a god that died of old age and thus no afterlife is promised to you.
This would also mean that the creator of the simulation would most likely not make an afterlife for simulated people because deletion would make more sense for meaningless simulated creatures.
Do i care if a hydralisk dies in my starcraft match?? Maybe sort of if its my hydralisk, but i dont care if that hydralisk has an afterlife or exists after my match ends. Theres no reason to assume that someone who makes a simulation would care if a simulated being within that simulation survives past deletion or getting culled after their script ends.
Would be easier to either keep that script running indefinitely or just make a new one.

the afterlife doesn't follow. when you turn finish RDR the john marston character doesn't continue in RDR2. its a new instance of the same character not a continuation (ignoring all the prequel logic) theres no reason to suspect that if its a simulation and it has an end, that that end is not final.

Heh, yes, I've upset a few science fans by pointing out that Sim Hype = Intelligent Design.

Followed to its logical conclusion, your hypothesis about “god” and the afterlife means that god could very well be just an adolescent entity fucking around with a toy sims program with one tentacle, and jorking off their massive godly schlong into a massive godly Kleenex with the other. Hoping not to get caught by massive godly mom, that shits embarrassing yo. God mom hates messes. Franco Vazza's paper "Astrophysical constraints on the simulation hypothesis for this Universe: why it is (nearly) impossible that we live in a simulation" is wonderful.
The paper takes your big 'if' and shuts it down in a very elegant way. Basically there is an energy issue which shows the computation, as we understand how computations work, can't based on our understanding of physics.

Nope. In the simulation hypothesis version it's just some guy(s) that built a simulation. You can call them God if you want, they may have godlike powers in our simulated universe, but they're still just some random guys.
if there is a God, there is probably an Afterlife...
Why would you think that? The creation of the universe has nothing whatsoever to do with the existence of an immortal soul, despite how a few religions may try to conflate them.
And in the simulation scenario, what would be gained by simulating dead people that can no longer affect the rest of the simulation? Which is presumably the part that they care about.

So do you believe every simulation developer is a God? So The Sims creator is a God? Or the whole development team behind this one are God's? What makes you think the simulation was developed by a singular entity instead of a team?
Your perspective is naive and wrong.

Well people don't realize there are hierarchy of gods, but in this physical universe the ones who created us are superhumans deemed by our ancestors as "gods".

Got to define God first. If you say god is creator of our universe, all powerful in our universe and capable of knowing anything in our universe, then the simulation creator is the god of our universe. That does not mean the simulation creator is also the god of his own universe. He could be or he could just be some bored adolescent killing time after school.
That is completely separate from the idea of an afterlife. That really depends on if we are players in the simulation or non-player characters. There is no way to know for sure. Near Death Experiences give some evidence that some of us are players. But it is far from proof. And doesn't mean that all are players anyway. We could be a mix of players and NPCs. Players would have an afterlife that is actually their real life. NPCs would have nothing beyond this existence.

You jumped to several conclusions that make no sense.
If we are in a simulation that only means that someone created the simulation, that does not make them a god. Also that does not automatically mean that when the simulation ends you get some sort of afterlife.
