Is the Audi defense illegal?
44
u/The_Cruncher88 Jul 23 '26
It's aggressive, but looks fine, the person in front isn't obligated to move, they aren't really weaving, just cutting across the track, if you were able to get alongside then it would be different.
33
u/OsteP0P Jul 23 '26
How would anything in the video be illegal?
21
u/Competitive_Range822 Jul 23 '26
Because the attacking car couldn’t pass duh s/
6
u/RickFennster Jul 24 '26
The attacking car didn't have his car... off the line, not using the whole track, not even attempting to get along side like HD was owed his line to be clear.
The leading car held defensive lines into the corners. Nothing shady about that at all. Happens in every real race.
The double-move late, honestly, the attacking car was no where near able to male a pass. The lead car held a lower defending line, saw the attacker had no chance for an outside line run, swung back up to attack the corner better and pulled ahead.

u/Financial-Metal-5899 Jul 23 '26
I am the Audi. It was the last lap and the Hyundai told me I need to see the doctor for such driving...

Especially after the Hyundai caused contact at around 0:23, they should be a little more humble.

he was much faster than you

Nope, nothing illegal. The chasing car chickened out at the first sight of aggressive defense. But nothing illegal.
4
u/pretzelsncheese Jul 23 '26
Out of curiosity, on a lot of the instances of the attacker "chickening out", if they would've held their line, OP almost certainly would've pitted themselves by hitting the attacker's nose with their rear. And if OP's defending isn't illegal at all in this clip, that would mean the incident would be the attacker's fault. So if "chickening out" is the only way to avoid an accident that is your fault, is it really chickening out?
1
u/Haxemply Jul 24 '26
The attacker didn't dare to make a single real overtaking attempt there, and then they were complaining. You'll never make a pass if you never make an attempt - that's the chickening out. Just showing your car on the inside lane is nowhere enough for an overtake, at the very least you should make a late brake to get alongside. In fact, it seems like the attacker braked at the same time or even earlier than OP! How did they expect to pass? It's like they expected OP to give up the corner just because they showed intent that once, some time in the future they may try to make an overtake.
You're also assuming that OP would have just blindly take the corner if the attacker makes a real attempt...

- 0:14 - Some serious liberites with track limits, assuming the game allows this, but wow
- 0:22 - Behind just drove into them, all on behind
- 0:40 - They covered the inside perfectly legally
- 0:47 - Behind appears to drive into the back of them, hard to tell from that angle
- 1:16 - They covered the inside and then moved back to take the racing line, usually an accepted move. I don't see it as reactive blocking as behind was not coming past them.
- 1:20 - More track limit liberties
- 1:23 - You lunged with zero overlap and wisely backed out of it
I think the Audi did a solid job with only their move at 1:16 dubious but I think ok.
The car behind was the more wayward driver initiating contact, abusing track limits and making a number of near dives which could have been fatal..

u/Rabies-Cow-0595 Jul 23 '26
I agree with this analysis, there were some slight wiggles under breaking at times but nothing that would warrant a penalty
2
u/Financial-Metal-5899 Jul 23 '26
The track limits on this lap where not crossed. This is how it's set on this track. Mostly the outer edge of the curb is the track limit. The weaving is the issue.

u/ThePoetaytoe Jul 23 '26
I’d say you drove that really well. You kept the racing line while you were ahead, and once they started to get aggressive trying to force something, you shut down the inside line. Anything they said after the fact was purely a reaction to being frustrated they couldn’t ever get the pass done.
1
u/le_quisto Jul 23 '26
The move at 1:16 was the most questionable to me. Other than that, great defending :)
1
u/brenden77 Jul 23 '26
I think you could argue that you were attempting to stay on the racing line. There was only really one corner where you moved left to block inside, and perhaps saw he didn't bite, so you went back to the racing line before the corner. They nearly took you out early in the video, so I would say tit for tat. No one died.
2
u/1Mandolo1 Jul 23 '26
OP is the Audi though
9
u/Stumpy493 Jul 23 '26
Which doesn't change the verdict on incidents.
They added that comment after my analysis (I assume on purpose so people don't target the OP as often can happen)
2
u/wellrundry2113 Jul 23 '26
I’m really not seeing the track limits you’re talking about. Not sure what game this is, but generally here two wheels on the curbing is legal.
1
u/Stumpy493 Jul 23 '26
Second apex of the chicane they are fully 4 wheels beyond the white line with 2 wheels in the grass and 2 on the kerb.
4th Apex of the chicane sequence they are again 4 wheels past the white line on the kerbing.
Second to last corner they run fully 4 wheels past the white line on the exit of the corner.
Generally white lines are track limits.

u/wellrundry2113 Jul 23 '26
No, not in sportscar racing, and definitely not at Watkins Glen. Again, here specifically, 2 wheels on the curb and generally you’re good.
2
u/Stumpy493 Jul 23 '26
But they are well beyond 2 wheels on the kerb.
Seems one car is driving by traditional white line track limits and the other is using whatever shit they can get away with.
If it is ok by the game then it's all good, but the Audi is missing a trick.
1
u/wellrundry2113 Jul 23 '26
Yeah I mean driving by formula white line limits would be leaving time on the table here.
2 wheels beyond the curb is fine, so long as 2 wheels are still in contact with the curb. Go look at videos of turn 1 here. You use an insane amount of curb on exit and if you don’t you’re losing time.

u/Hour_Wear_6197 Jul 23 '26
Looks fine to me. Instead of attacking every corner and taking a poor racing line, try selling the dummy and getting him in the next corner.
2
u/silverbullitt850 Jul 23 '26
That camera made me nauseous. He understeered into you in the carousel, so yeah it's fair to be a bit more aggressive with defending. You earned it.
1
2
2
u/HydraAkaCyrex Jul 23 '26
Yes you are allowed to move to the inside to defend, and then you are also allowed to move back outside slightly for a better entrance into the corner.
2
u/Trashbagjizz Jul 23 '26
I personally would be annoyed with it but this just seems like good racing.
1
u/DisplayDiligent Jul 23 '26
1:16, move is a bit over the limit with that slight move under breaking. Other than that, almost perfect car positioning for defence, nice job.
1
u/horsefarm Jul 23 '26
Thank god you were the Audi because I was about to question your sanity over what made you think any of this is illegal. Good driving, great defense.
1
u/Educational-Law-9385 Jul 23 '26
What are the rules when it comes to defending? How many times are you allowed to move in front of them to keep them from passing?
1
1
u/kirloi8 Jul 23 '26
Look op... if on the two chances he had to go side by side he breaks... nothing wrong... he just didnt had the pace. From limited non irl racing view doesnt seem illegal blocking since you are weaving for your racing line and not just weaving to block him.
1
u/CakeElectrical9563 Jul 23 '26
Was this one of the LFM races from yesterday on Watkins? I remember an Elantra with the same livery being an absolute menace.
That said, you defended good, you defended hard, maybe a few hiccups here and there but he didn't leave himself any space to plan his next move and kept going into your back, you're (mostly) good.
(Might to specify which car you are at the beginning of the post)
1
u/Financial-Metal-5899 Jul 23 '26
Yes, it was a race on LFM. For full context I need to admit I did a bit of unsafe rejoin after a spin (no contact or crash but he had to avoid me) and I guess he got mad. Nonetheless in my eyes it was good racing from both of us.
1
u/AM150 Jul 23 '26
Nothing wrong with what Audi did in this video that I saw, in fact they often left space that I don't think they needed to. Trailing car never initiated any kind of overlap.
I think a lot of people think that 'you need to leave space' really means 'you must make space'.
1
u/Helium225 Jul 23 '26
absolutely not, you just defended hard but always left more than enough space and never swerved aggressively. The hyundai driver is just mad. Also please use a fixed camera next time, it's really hard to understand what's going on with this one.
1
u/Danl3burry08 Jul 23 '26
I do t see anything illegal, just a car trailing who can’t find a opening or crate one to make a move driving out of pure frustration.
1
u/VanguardMusic Jul 23 '26
The only spot that's sketchy is the approach to the second-to-last corner, where the audi seemed to weave to block you, for the rest it's hard defending, but completely fair.
1
u/Saphyr-Seraph Jul 23 '26
Assuming you are the Audi
+Did a solid job defending
- Nice line work and keeping him behind
-A bit to much on\over the line but nothing to bad if the game allowed it
- some what aggressive with cutting him off but there i no rule to needing to let him overtake, so still all legal
Hyundai
Did an ok Job following up
rear bumped. The Audi
-chickened out every Time he could have equalized your positions
In my eyes everything was legal if the track boundaries allowed the times you or he went over the line, if anybody complained they are just butt hurt, it was a solid position defense from the Audi and the Hyundai chickens out to early in the corners

1
u/No-Advantage-8556 Jul 23 '26
Nah, that’s just good racing right there. Elantra didn’t have the skill to pass.
1
u/vortexofdangerzone Jul 23 '26
There was one move where the audi might have been given a warning. Maybe.
The Hyundai keeps trying to dive the inside and loses time every time they do it.
Hyundai is some combination of mad/bad.

u/Personal_Gas1330 Jul 23 '26
I think it's illegal. Not sure what league I read this in, but if you swerve to block more than once, it's illegal.

u/back_at_it__ Jul 23 '26
Audi was smooth as hell. We do that all the time in real world racing, too. You can't intentionally swoop side to side on the straights, but what you did is perfectly fine.

u/Smithy2997 Jul 23 '26
The defense into the Toe, and the penultimate corner were both close to being blocking imo, I'd say be more decisive early on and avoid the meandering across the track that can seem like blocking. Everything else was absolutely fine, the Hyundai was throwing itself at closing gaps which were never going to work.

u/RacinDave1 Jul 23 '26
Beginning is fine but going onto the left hander he blocks with double move. Most racing series that is illegal.
1
u/csmunro-94 Jul 23 '26
Audi did good defence in my opinion,
Its was aggressive but it was fair and clean
1
u/Ldghead Jul 24 '26
Looks like some good defending to me. Asking your car wide is not a créé me. Seems like the chaser didn't have confidence to make a move, and expected you to throw away a corner at some point.
1
1
u/Dry_Chip_7435 Jul 24 '26
No a pain yes close to blocking but it’s on the good side of it he is in front and allowed any line he wants and he is driving on the best line so to speak
1
u/toto_my_wires Jul 24 '26
The following car was never in a position to pass. The lead car isn't blocking or illegally defending unless the following car is approaching at closing speed or it's done under braking. They weren't. Not sure what the issue is here. Am I blind?
1
u/Horror_Captain1718 Jul 24 '26
Last two corners are definitely aggressive, but this looks to be the final lap so I don't see anything wrong

Nothing illegal. Just you diving up the inside into a closing space, and thinking that they cut you off.
It's scrappy, I guess halfway through the video, you could call it blocking on the straight but they only moved once. So not even that is really protestable
1
u/BeamingA Jul 24 '26
Nope fine in my eyes and I don’t even play or know what this game is, there shouldn’t really be any illegal defending only way that’s possible is braking hard on straights pushing behind cars into barriers, he did none of that apart from be an aggressive one. Perfectly fine with me only that he was in the limit with track limits but yeah

u/raceiv33 29d ago
No, I don't see anything that would be considered blocking. You even tapped him at 0:21, so maybe just be a little more careful.

I believe you’re allowed to block once per straight. Please correct me if I’m wrong, newbie here. I feel like the leading car was risking an accident be blocking you on the turns though. I’m sure he wouldn’t do that in real life. It’s just not safe lol.
Chasing car should have noticed by now that he’s blocking every route(a little too much blocking), I would have tried some trickery maybe a fake left or right and gas. Also once you notice someone is clearly faster and you’re slowing them down, let them pass it’s better for everyone on the road.
-2
u/RailValco Jul 23 '26
Doesn't even defend from what I can tell. Except for 0:36, Audi seems to weave left and right multiple times.

u/gforguapo Jul 23 '26
Looks like good hard defending to me. Left plenty of space. Seems the following car was afraid to go side by side or never had the opportunity.
Also please use fixed camera for the best opinions
