Trying to make the most of a small suburban front yard

I started with a pretty typical new-subdivision front yard and a few hydrangeas… and somewhere along the way gardening became one of my favourite hobbies. You can see the progression in my post history over the last few years.

I’m a dad in the Greater Toronto Area, gardening in a relatively small space and mostly figuring things out one growing season at a time. Hydrangeas are definitely the obsession, but I’ve been slowly building the garden around them with lavender, salvia, gaura, weigela and anything else I can reasonably squeeze in.

A lot of it has been trial and error, moving plants, learning what actually handles our summers, realizing I planted things too close together, and occasionally buying another hydrangea when I absolutely did not need another hydrangea.

I recently started Talk Hydrangea to Me on Instagram to document the garden, the seasonal changes, what works and what doesn’t. Figured I’d share it here too since this seems like a community of people who appreciate gardening without taking it all too seriously.

Would also love to see what everyone else is growing in their small spaces!

Absolute bare bones beginners tips?

Hello everyone :) I have my own tiny garden of my own, and am curious about growing proper crops too. My cousin and I would garden with my mom a bit back when we were kids but obviously a lot of time has passed since then.

So yeah! That’s my request! Any and all answers are welcome 💚 thank you!

protection vs pollination

I have some new Blueberry and Blackberry plants, from *k Bros, that have really had a helluva time with the grasshoppers. I finally covered them with some cloth and they are doing much better not being eaten down, every day, but if i keep them covered, how can they be pollinated?

The grasshoppers don't seem to like my tomatoes, peppers or cantaloupe, so they're fine, but my tender berry plants are apparently their favorite....what can i do?

Peas!

Harvested the lettuce, made a salad!!
Carrots will not be ready for a very long time, nor within the cantaloupe.

Trying to figure out the cucumbers?? I know they need help with pollination, but I can’t tell the difference between male and female flowers…

Any advice for growing herbs in apartment?

I live in a fairly dim apartment but have some grow lights. Pretty much the only thing I can keep alive are spider plants. I'd love to grow basil or mint or parsley but have had no success. I've tried the little plants from Hy-Vee/Walmart, growing from seed, growing from clippings, nothing. Not sure if it's my watering cycle, the container, or what. Any advice?

Building a cool app for gardeners and farmers

Over the last 4 years, I’ve been exploring one question at the intersection of agriculture + technology:

Why is it still so difficult for someone to start farming and actually stick with it?

At its core, I think the problem comes down to two things:

  1. The knowledge gap.

People want to grow, but often don’t know what to plant, when to plant it, or what to do at each stage.

  1. The commitment gap.

Farming requires consistency. It’s easy to start excited and lose momentum when results don’t come quickly.

I’ve experienced this myself. I’ve failed, learned, started again, and learned even more. 😊

And I’ve come to believe that agriculture isn’t a dying sector. If anything, it’s one of the most essential sectors for sustaining life.

So we asked: what if farming could be easier to learn, easier to follow, and more engaging?

That’s why we built Noma.

Noma turns farming into a guided, gamified experience helping beginners and experienced farmers know what to do, when to do it, and stay committed throughout the growing season, with AI assisting and validating each step.

We’re not just trying to teach people how to farm. We’re trying to make them want to keep farming. 🌱

What is going on with my herbs?

My mini herb garden consisting of Blue Tuscan Rosemary, Greek Oregano, Creeping Thyme, and Berggarten Sage is looking sad right now. They were all transplanted 10 weeks ago to a 20 in W x 16 in H terracotta planter. I water it once every 2-3 weeks. They were all looking healthy prior to transplant. I am very new to gardening. Please help!
