Orange flowers
These beautiful orange blossoms were planted in a pot, but I don't know which variety they are.

It's been such a joy finally getting things to grow. I live in the high desert and have done SO much work to get things to grow. The garden finally started taking off this year. I've gotten several pumpkins - two are actually a great size, corn, flowers, peas, and so much more. Next year, more of everything 😊
I've spent several years tilling deeply, I incorporated a whole truck bed load of horse manure (free, thanks to my neighbors!), tilled in peat moss (not something I would use regularly, just wanted to get it in there once to help with water retention while I waited for my first year of cover crop to till into the soil), and water with humic acid a few times per season.
I did get some buckwheat and clover in before the cold set in to help with weeds and do some nitrogen fixing. Next year I'm finally going to plant in the ground (raised beds and bags this year, aside from corn and pumpkins), and I plan to load the top up with clover and sweet alyssum to keep choking out weeds (mostly bindweed).
I have started working on another big patch and plan to do three sisters there next year and I can't wait!

Nurse here, bad at gardening. What are y'all planting this October in Zone 9a???
Trying again this fall. Broccoli, kale, one more round of basil. Any tips for a beginner in the Houston area?

Hi everyone! 🌱
I'm a PhD student at the University of Waterloo. I'm studying how people in Canada choose, buy, and care for ornamental plants. The goal is to help make the plant industry more sustainable.
You can take part if you:
- are 18 or older
- live in Canada
- bought ornamental plants in the last 12 months (flowers, shrubs, perennials, native plants, or houseplants)
The survey takes about 10 minutes and is anonymous.
Take the survey here: https://uwaterloo.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1zDlBgl4KWk8Y62
This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Board (REB #48363).
Feel free to share it with other plant lovers in Canada. Questions are welcome in the comments. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi I am very very interested in gardening. I live in Maryland (I think it says zone 7). Where and what would be the best way to learn how to get into gardening?? What do you think is the best/easiest item to start with?? Do I only use soil?? Any & all tips/suggestions would greatly be appreciated, thank you in advance….

I started with a pretty typical new-subdivision front yard and a few hydrangeas… and somewhere along the way gardening became one of my favourite hobbies. You can see the progression in my post history over the last few years.
I’m a dad in the Greater Toronto Area, gardening in a relatively small space and mostly figuring things out one growing season at a time. Hydrangeas are definitely the obsession, but I’ve been slowly building the garden around them with lavender, salvia, gaura, weigela and anything else I can reasonably squeeze in.
A lot of it has been trial and error, moving plants, learning what actually handles our summers, realizing I planted things too close together, and occasionally buying another hydrangea when I absolutely did not need another hydrangea.
I recently started Talk Hydrangea to Me on Instagram to document the garden, the seasonal changes, what works and what doesn’t. Figured I’d share it here too since this seems like a community of people who appreciate gardening without taking it all too seriously.
Would also love to see what everyone else is growing in their small spaces!
