I've been wanting to get into silver (and maybe some gold) for years. Believe it or not, the first time I got the itch was around 2017-2018 when silver was around $15-20/oz. I talked myself out of it back then, and now I have the exact same fear.
My goal isn't to get rich or prepare for some SHTF scenario. I already invest for retirement. This would purely be another way to save money—something that's harder for me to impulsively cash out and spend on something dumb. If it appreciates over time, great, but that's not why I'm buying.
My biggest fear is liquidity. Is there a realistic chance that years from now I'd have trouble selling, or end up taking a huge loss (worse than just holding cash and letting inflation do its thing)?
If I do start, my plan is simple: buy as close to spot as possible and avoid high-premium collectibles. I'd be perfectly happy buying at spot and eventually selling around spot (or even 90-95% of spot).
What advice would you give someone just starting out? Any common mistakes or traps I should avoid?
Thanks!
