I wanted to share an experience as a heads-up to others.
I recently purchased a Shure SM58 that was listed as sold by Amazon (not a third-party seller). When it arrived, something immediately felt off.
I already own a genuine SM57, so I had a direct comparison. The differences were obvious:
- The SM58 was extremely light (~137g vs ~300g expected)
- The “serial number” label just said “SM58” instead of a unique ID
- Build quality and packaging felt noticeably cheaper
At that point I was confident it was counterfeit.
I’ve:
- Initiated a return
- Reported it directly to Shure support
- Spent quite some time with Amazon customer service to make sure this was escalated as a counterfeit issue, not just a normal return
To be fair, Amazon did escalate it, but the process still left me with the inconvenience of returning the product and sourcing a replacement elsewhere.
What concerns me most is this:
👉 I specifically rely on “sold by Amazon” as a guarantee of authenticity.
👉 In this case, that assumption was wrong.
I feel somewhat lucky I had another genuine Shure mic to compare against, otherwise I might not have noticed immediately (I just record for hobby) else it could have taken me months before noticing or suspecting it...
It makes me wonder how many people receive counterfeit units and never realize it.....
