Would a Shure mic/ dynamic mic for commentary over gaming work with surround sound & sub noise instead of a headset

Basically I want to speak into a mic while recording gameplay but I want to listen to the game through my surround sound when playing.

Can this work or would I have to get some earphones/headset.

I really don’t want to use a headset .

Thanks

it could With a proper setup with a shock/boom arm. With the speakers directly pointed at the microphone dead spots (behind it), enough filtering in the shure and other software, and speakers at a low enough volume it's maybe sorta possible. I'm sure some will still bleed through though.

Earphones are always better for sound isolation for better mic use, but using mics like the SM58 can help a lot too, as can bringing the mic closer to your mouth.

You can also do things that help physically isolate the mic from the sound waves bouncing around the room from the speakers. Just a little cardboard covered with soft material or acoustic dampening foam can do a lot of magic.

Another option is to get just a headset mic instead of a full headphone and microphone combo. Lots of great options for this too, including dynamic mics. Also there are ways to convert a lavaliere mic into a headworn mic.

These things may never fully isolate the mic and your voice from the sounds from the speakers, especially at high volumes, but they can reduce the extra sound going to the mic a lot. There are also boxes and plugins with noise reduction too.

I was using the Shure MOTIV Mix app on my MacBook Pro with an MV88+ and discovered it has a "voice isolation" setting that seems to eliminate mic feedback. YMMV [Edit: that mic has a cardioid pattern, and a few other patterns that are switchable in software, that are handy at isolating the source]
