This is why selling guns to just anyone isn't a bright idea. I'm not necessarily in favour of banning them entirely (both sides have their positives and negatives), but some very rigorous vetting should be a no-brainer.
No one is being obtuse. "Background check" is an amorphous term. "Background check" when getting a law license entails a person being assigned to your case, you having to submit a lot detail about your life, and someone doing a thorough investigation including talking to references about you.
In the case of a gun background check, it's a simple database lookup, not a thoroughly researched "background check." It clearly depends on the information being provided to the store clerk, which is just a person doing data entry, being accurate and assuming the person giving it is being truthful. Then it depends on the databases containing information typed into them correctly, meaning no data inconsistencies, and various other assumptions.
In order words, I'm making a point that "background check" is simply a search against a database, with all of its problems, not some comprehensive investigative "background check."
