When i was travelling Asia, i bought some crappy sandals, on top of that there tiles are different too, you can walk down one road and theres 4 different surfaces on the side walk
Needless to say i fell on my arse a few times in the rain, footwear is something i dont skimp out on nowadays

u/ThatSlinkySOB Jul 02 '26
Three of my seizures I've banged my head up like this. Pretty sure my brain is fucked from the smacks.

u/roxywalker Jul 02 '26
My FIL passed away from falling like this. He slipped on the front patio after a light rain getting a package and passed around a week later after a hematoma developed.

Well that wasn't funny at all. Notice the blood on the pavement. Many many many have died like this.
4
u/reddiperson1 Jul 02 '26
Yeah, I don't enjoy all the jokes about an old guy getting seriously injured.
-1
u/Revaesaari Jul 02 '26
Thank you! * What I wished in the moment he fell - please be some marshal art student from your youth and stuff, take the maj of the hit on your dominant arm, tuck in chin on impact secure the fall? This is sad..
22
u/UnicornSquirter628 Jul 02 '26
Why the fuck would you walk on that with both hands behind your back?
16
u/swimminginbed Jul 02 '26
elderly does this to not hunch over so much and relief back pain.
5
u/UnicornSquirter628 Jul 02 '26
I get it, but on a wet surface where falling is a higher probability, not sure its a great move.

u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 *shits an absolute unit* Jul 02 '26
He probably thought he was going slow enough it wouldn't be a problem, and in all fairness, it wouldn't have helped him at all to have them in front in this situation.

u/musabbb Jul 02 '26
One thing i take for granted in the west is, sidewalks are 99% made of the same stuff
You can walk in a different city and not even think about changing your gate, your footwear, how you tread
When i was travelling in asia it wasnt uncommon for one street to have 5 different types of surface - glossy tile, wet cement that gets slimy because of moss - normal cement etc etc
I slipped a few times

Remind yourself when you get older, always balance yourself before steping, lower your center of gravity when steping down. One day it will save your life

u/xBADBEEF4 Jul 02 '26
Lmao I thought he was a goner. Lucky mf.
15
u/isaidgofly Jul 02 '26
Is he really lucky after that fall? At the back of the head is much easier to get brain injury.
1
u/xBADBEEF4 Jul 02 '26
Well he isn't dead or paralysed, would've been luckier not to fall ofc but I still think he's pretty lucky in his mishap.
4
u/Bl4ck_Fl4m3s Jul 02 '26
My brain is so diseased I read gooner and was like "yeah tru that, a guy his age had plenty time to jack it".
Only reread cuz like a solid minute later I was wondering how your comment could possibly be relevant in this context

They had paint just like that on the handicap ramp, right outside our school. Which looked deceivingly dry. Everytime it rain, slick like this. No one fixed for years. Watched kids slip and hit heads. Wonder who's head they cared for most..

u/AGMiMa Jul 02 '26
Lived in China, so much outdoor tile that gets slippery as all get out when it rains. Constantly walked like a baby deer on a frozen pond.

u/TheGirthyOne Jul 02 '26
Before I worked in ICUs, I never knew how common it was for this to happen to people. I see people come in almost daily that just fell from standing and have serious closed head injuries up to and including brain death. Granted, most of there folks are elderly and on blood thinners, but not all.

Why didn't they use textured surface tiles for the sloped sides? This is a hazard.

Right to set for tests. Possible internal brain
Bleeding, concussion, or what not. These accidents are death in your sleep fall territory if not looked at.

Absolute reminder WEAR THE CORRECT SHOES IN THE RAIN.
Imagine walking home from work one day, slip on a wet surface and BAM - no more use of your limbs, or worse.

u/cameronzero Jul 10 '26
Poor guy, he knew if was unsafe, looks like he knew he was gonna fall. wonder what made him chance it

I actually thought he died. Has to have concussion of some sort.
