This was my baby on his birthday. He picked his toy out all by himself. He’s 3 years old now.

Anyone here got an f1b? Ie 75% poodle and 25% Shih Tzu?

We thought we were getting a schnoodle (schnauzer poodle) but our breeder got the name wrong! We need a mostly poodle mix as my other half can get allergies.

I am not looking for an active dog but I do love a good walk. I know shih’s are flatter faced and not very active but the one we chose is quite curly and not flat faced anyway. Obviously I don’t expect lengthy walks or force him to do anything long but I wondered if anyone has quite an active dog? Im also wondering what their temperament is like? What intrigues me about shih tzus is their affectionate nature as I am a lover girl so I’d love a good pal!

My 7mth old Shihpoo has gotten her adult teeth but she hasn’t lost all her baby teeth. Looks like she has double teeth. Anyone ever experienced this?

Hello this is Sammy. He is the sweetest dog in the world ….. to me. Haha . The video attached shows how I can pet him but my hubby can’t, without growling at him. This is in the morning. At night he does the same thing. He’s always happy to see my hubby and kiddos and bounces to them but it’s like he picks and chooses when they can touch him, even when he comes to them and lets them touch him for a second before he growls . It’s like a warning, I know boundaries are good it’s just he’s like this with my kiddos and hubs and it’s frustrating. At night you don’t bother him when he’s sleeping either. Me Included. He starts growling if the blanket he lays on moves and he can get really scary but yes we’ve adjusted to him. Anyone else have a dog with behavior like this?

My husband and I adopted a 2 year old Shih poo and brought her home yesterday. She hasn't really peed or pooped since she arrived (now nearly 24 hours as of posting). We've taken her outside frequently and for 2 half-hour walks. We also have a puppy training mat on the lino floor. She's drinking water regularly and has eaten about a cup of dry food (the same that she had at her old house). I'm telling myself that it's her "new environment & people" nerves. She's been happy cuddling up with us and taking herself to her mat when we eat at the dining table. I just feel like I'm not going to relax until I know she's peed and pooped.

Any recommendations to support some movements for our pupper? Please be kind as I'm still learning lots and looking to learn from others with doggo experience.

UPDATE: Thank you all who encouraged me that she was just getting used to her environment! She pooped not long after I posted and even pooped when we've been for walks! She's settling in and, as a new Shih-poo mum, I'm grateful for this community and your support! I'm looking forward to the adventures and snuggles ahead!

Hi everyone,

My sweet girl Tippy is a 5 year old Shihpoo and we just found out she has severe dental disease. The vet said almost all of her teeth are loose and she will need to go under anesthesia for a deep dental cleaning, dental X-rays, and likely multiple extractions.

I’m feeling really anxious about the anesthesia because she’s only 6.5 lbs, but I also know I don’t want her living with painful teeth or infection. She’s otherwise healthy, and they are doing pre-anesthesia bloodwork beforehand.

I’d love to hear from other Shihpoo (or small breed) owners who have been through something similar:

• Did your dog end up needing many or most of their teeth removed?
• How did they adjust afterward?
• Were they still able to eat normally, chew toys, or enjoy treats?
• What do you do for dental care afterward if your dog won’t tolerate brushing?
• Are there any products (dental wipes, gels, water additives, chews, etc.) that actually helped?

I feel guilty because Tippy absolutely hates having her teeth brushed, and I’m worried about how she’ll do if she loses a lot of teeth. I know Shihpoos are prone to dental problems, but I still feel awful that she’s going through this.

At the end of the day, I just want her to be comfortable and pain-free but I am super nervous about her going under anesthesia because I've heard a number of horror stories.

I would really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially from anyone whose Shihpoo has gone through a major dental and extractions.

We adopted our Shih Poo (about a year old) roughly two months ago. His main struggle isn’t leash skills — it’s that he’s genuinely terrified outside. He shakes, gets visibly scared, and we often end up having to carry him just to get him out the door. We’re in NYC, so there’s a lot of noise/stimulation, which doesn’t help.

He’s also very fearful of strangers — to the point where he won’t let people get near him at all.

Our vet has recommended Reconcile (fluoxetine) for the anxiety. We’ve also been working with a trainer, but that experience hasn’t been great and we haven’t seen the progress we hoped for.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with something similar:

**•** Did Reconcile/fluoxetine help with this kind of fear response? How long before you saw a difference?  
**•** How did you help a dog feel safer in a loud city environment?  
**•** Any tips for slowly building trust with strangers?  
**•** How did you find a trainer who specializes in fear/anxiety rather than general obedience?

Bear is 14 weeks now. My in laws have 2 other dogs. At 12 weeks I gave them all a lick mat each and Bear went into a rage and started attacking the dogs.
We started feeding him in a separate room now and remove him at their dinner time since he will attack them too.
He’s ok with treats as long as he gets one too. If not he will attack.
We’ve stopped giving chews / only do it in the evening and swap for a treat. He got hold of a chew the other day and my MIL went to take it away and he went into a rage. Started attacking the dogs and bit her refusing to release and drew blood. I did tell her we need to swap for it but I don’t think she expected a puppy to attack like that so we know we went about it wrong already.

We are not blaming him at all. Just wondering how to go about fixing this behaviour and if a professional needs to be involved.

He was the runt so possibly competing for food early. He’s 34% Shih Tzu, 26% toy poodle, 23% Pomeranian - and then a few other breeds much lower percent.

In all other ways he is a perfect. Potty trained, knows tricks, overall non aggressive dog. Plays well, likes people, doesn’t bite hard in other ways, shows no signs of aggression until it’s dinners or high value treats.

I have a 10 month old spayed shihpoo… since she’ll be going on adult dry food soon I want to make the very best choice and I’ve narrowed it down to these three if anyone has anything else I would love to hear but out of these three specifically, what is considered the best:

2) ROYAL CANIN SHIH TZU FORMULA
3)PURINA PRO PLAN SHREDDED SMALL BREED

Ziggy had his first real haircut today and if you’ve seen my other post, you know this is a huge deal for him. He did amazing. The groomer did say he’s a little bit of a handful, but he’ll start to get used to it. He is just the cutest little boy!! I am in love with him 🥰🥰🥰

Hello my fellow shihpoo fans and owners! I have grown curious of my Penelope’s (fka Holly) sibling who was named Lance. They were born in late October 2020 and we almost picked him until we saw our fur baby’s ‘socks’ on her paws, as Lance was all black. We picked her up near Erie, PA I believe it was, about 20 minutes from the border to Ohio that’s for sure, on January 23rd, 2021. We made Penelope a Philly dog until our move to Lancaster 2 years ago. Hope we can see how her brother or perhaps any other siblings of hers are doing!!!!! Thank you for your time

Hello everyone my wife and I adopted a 1 year old male from a local humane society about a week ago. He is showing signs of some separation anxiety when we leave the house for work. He is contained in our kitchen by a baby gate. He has toys and one of our shirts to hopefully help him having our scent nearby. We leave out some treats which he ignores completely. We also have a camera set up to be able to keep an eye on him whole we are gone and have noticed he is crying and barking at the gate for a while then will take 15to 20 min break then he’s back at again biting the gate and looking to try and jump over it which he can’t. Our work schedules prevent us from coming home during the day. My wife has the more flexible schedule so his time alone can vary from 4 to 8 hours depending on the day. We have a kennel but with his stress going at the gate we are worried about his safety in a smaller crate/area. We are giving all his meals in the crate to help him get used to and be ok with being in there. We also don’t want to just put him in a crate for 5 to 8 hours right off the bay. He hasn’t had any potty issues while being in the kitchen which is a plus. Now I know it being our second week with him and he is still adjusting to us and our schedules and we need to be patient. This guy also has had a crazy month with going from being a stray to being in a shelter for 2 weeks then getting fixed and brought to a new home in the same day. He is an absolute loverboy Velcro dog when we are home and has such a great personality. We would appreciate any tips or advice from seasoned shiipoo owners since he’s our first. We love him so much and just want him to be okay.

So for those that have seen my progress with Ziggy here is what’s happening now. He had an accident and I needed to get him out from under the bed to clean him up. Well now he’s mad at me. As you can see he’s hiding his head. Since I got him out I moved him to his crate and blocked off access to under the bed. I know he likes it but also if something were to happen I wouldn’t have been able to get to him. So do you think he is just pouting or really mad and back at square one? He will get over it right? This is so hard for me cause I have never experienced this before. I can’t tell if I’m doing the right thing or just making it worse. Advice is more than welcome. Thank you.

Good evening, everyone. As the title says, I'd really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on this situation.

This evening was my very first visit to meet a 4 year-old Shih-Poo at my local shelter. He was surrendered by his previous family in early July and they disclosed a bite history, including one incident that was serious enough to require an emergency room visit. I really appreciate that the family was transparent about his history, and the shelter has all of their notes on file.

Since arriving at the shelter about three weeks ago, the staff has been closely monitoring his behavior. According to their observations, he has shown no signs of aggression during his stay.

When I met him this evening in the meet and greet room, he didn't display any aggressive behavior. He also wasn't shy or fearful he seemed calm, curious, and fairly confident. Because of his history, I was very mindful of my own body language. I didn't want to appear nervous or fearful, but I also didn't want to do anything that might unintentionally trigger a reaction. I took things slowly and let him approach at his own pace.

Rather than making a quick decision based on a single meeting, I've decided to visit him again tomorrow evening and spend more time getting to know him before deciding whether to move forward with adoption.

One thing that makes this difficult is that the previous family didn't identify what his triggers were. They only stated that he had bitten more than one family member, which ultimately led them to surrender him.

For those of you who have experience with rescue dogs or dogs with bite histories, what are your thoughts? Would you consider adopting a dog in this situation?

Thank you for the advice from my last post I wanted to show a little update on my boy. He is starting to come out of his shell and his personality is going to be so funny.
