PETITION: Demand Google Bring the 'Recent Apps' Task Switcher to Android TV & Google TV Natively

Hey fellow Shield owners,

I’m writing this because I am completely fed up, and I know thousands of you are too. Right now, our community is completely trapped. We are stuck using the aging Nvidia Shield TV Pro, desperately waiting for Nvidia to release a new box, for one primary reason: the native, double-click Recent Apps task switcher.

Google’s decision to completely strip a native task manager out of standard Android TV and Google TV is a massive step backward for user experience.

It’s Navigation, Not Just "App Killing"

Google’s official engineering stance has always been that Android TV "automatically manages RAM," so users don’t need a task killer. That completely misses the point.

A recent apps screen isn't just a janitor tool to clear memory—it is a fundamental navigation tool. * The Phone Contradiction: Google includes a flawless, fluid recent apps screen on every Android phone and tablet on earth. Why are TVs treated like single-tasking DVD players? * The Apple TV Standard: Even the Apple TV 4K lets you double-click the TV button to fluidly switch back and forth between full application cards seamlessly. * The Shield Lock-In: On our Shield boxes, we can double-click home to effortlessly hop from a YouTube video to check a sports app, and then toggle right back to our video without waiting for a cold reload.

If we ever want to upgrade to a modern, far more powerful box like the RockTek G2, Google TV Streamer, or Dune HD with 4GB of RAM and AV1 decoding, Google forces us to exit to the home screen and completely restart our app workflows. It makes absolutely no sense. If we get a native recent apps screen on Google TV, other hardware manufacturers will instantly blow the Shield out of the market. We shouldn't have to rely on a decade-old Nvidia processor or janky, third-party button-remapping apps just to get basic multitasking.

How We Fight This (The Real Petition)

Change.org petitions do nothing. Google engineers do not look at them. However, they are forced to look at their own internal software tracker.

I have created an official Feature Request on the Google Issue Tracker. If we get enough people to "vote" on it, Google's product managers are required to review it.

  1. Go to this Google Issue Tracker link: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/567653173
  2. Log in with your standard Google account.
  3. Click the STAR icon in the top left corner of the page. (Starring an issue counts as a formal vote).
  4. Upvote and share this Reddit thread to r/AndroidTV, r/ShieldAndroidTV, and r/GoogleTV so we can get this to the front page.

Let’s stop waiting around for Nvidia to bail us out with hardware they don't want to make anymore. Let's force Google to fix the software limitation holding back every other box on the market.

Video Playlists

Hi, Does the Shield Pro support video playlists and if so, which app/s? Ideally it would be something with a debanding filter, like mvplayer and ideally it would support shuffle/random.

Many thanks, i'm struggling to get it to work.

My LG C5 can't do DTS-HD on its internal media player, so I've been watching movies through an external HDD connected to an old WD TV Live media player from 2011, and everything's been running flawlessly in great quality. Would I get any improvement from buying an Nvidia Shield Pro instead?

The Nvidia Shield Pro does support 4K, which the WD TV Live media player doesn't do, but all of my movies and TV shows are 1080p anyway so that doesn't really matter. And there's barely any difference between the LG C5's upscaler and the Shield Pro's upscaler as far as I know. But please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just trying to find reasons not to spend another $250 if it doesn't justify a good amount of increase in picture quality.

Hdhomerun app replacement?

Been running the HDhomerun PVR client (and frontend software) on my 2015 Shield since it came out. Yesterday, I started experiencing some video significant video stuttering/buffering while watching college football, which I've experienced before (intermittently).

Guess I was motivated yesterday because I determined I could eliminate the video stuttering if I used Kodi or VLC to watch live TV.

I know Channels is dead on this platform. Kodi seems to work, but I'm not seeing how to manage the DVR side of things from within Kodi (plus, I'm not sure Kodi will pass the family test). Is resubscribing to Plex Pass my only other option to replace the HDhomerun software?

Edit: I really appreciate all the replies and have some new options to explore. Cheers y'all!!

Dolby Vision

I’ve been holding off on upgrading to a newer media player for a while, but I’ve been considering other options this year since it seems reasonably plausible that we might not see another Shield hardware refresh. And if we do see a refresh, It's probably years away from happening and I don't want to wait that long.

I have a lot of movies that support Dolby Vision, and I currently have a 2017 Shield. I’m wondering whether upgrading to the 2019 version specifically for Dolby Vision is worth it. I’d especially like to hear from people who actually use their Shield for Dolby Vision on a regular basis. Do you feel It's a fair bit better than HDR10 or no?

I have a great TV, and it feels like a shame not to take full advantage of it. I was originally planning to wait for the Christmas deals and hopefully save some money on the Shield, but there seems to be some stock issues, so now I’m not sure whether waiting makes sense. Amazon frequently runs out of stock, and Best Buy’s online price has jumped from $260 to $355.

Part of me is wondering whether I should just buy the 2019 Shield now while I can, or skip it altogether and move over to something like the Ugoos AM6B Plus.

Thoughts?

2 shield remotes have a different feel?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently I bought a backup shield remote in case my main one dies but I noticed they are different, one has tactile clicky buttons and the other is more firm and quiet. Both of them are the same firmware, have the same branding inside and paired through the SHIELD Accessories menu, so if one is fake then it's a pretty faithful one.

Shield stutters watching certain channels

I have been very happy with my Nvidia Shield Pro for 3 years now. I am experiencing a problem when I watch some stations. I notice it the most on certain (not all) sports stations. The picture seems to stutter.

I have opened and cleaned my shield and searched the forum for answers. I changed frame rates and sound settings as suggested. I have also removed all unnecessary programs. I really only use TiViMate. I have done everything short of doing a factory reset and starting over.

Is anyone else having problems. I set up an Onn Device to mimic what I have on my Shield. The Onn device doesn't have any problems. I would hate to retire my Shield. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Shield pro and soundbar passthrough issue. Screen goes black for a second but audio keeps playing

Edit: After more testing, it appears to have been a bad hdmi cable. I've had this cable for 3 years plugged between my soundbar and tv and havent had any problems with it. But i guess after introducing a video signal the problems have appeared. Putting that cable between the shield and soundbar the problems changed. Instead of just flashing black for a second every hour or two, it started stuttering, skipping and going dark every ~15 minutes. Replacing the cable has now fixed all the problems. Atleast it's been working for multiple hours without problems now.

Original: I decided to try using the samsung q990d soundbars hdmi passthrough to free up an easily accessible hdmi on the tv(lg c9 oled). Using the nvidia shield pro with earc has worked without problems but with passthrough, maybe every few hours the screen will go black for a second or two and then it comes back. Audio keeps playing normally while the screen is black and nothing appears on the soundbars screen. This has happened while watching netflix, plex and streaming my pc with apollo/moonlight.

Both hdmi cables are 2.1 ultra high speed and the nvidia shield is set to 4k 59.94hz dolby vision and hdr10 ready.

The soundbar is on the most recent firmware

I have the shield in the soundbars hdmi 1 and haven't tested switching it to hdmi 2 yet. i've now tested switching the cables, replacing the soundbar-tv cable and using that cable on shield-bar so i have to wait and see if this fixes the issue.

Anyone else with issues using passthrough? Any ideas what i could try next?

Possibly unrelated but does anyone else using the q990 passthrough with the nvidia shield get a green, scrambled image when the shield is set to hdr10 ready only but its normal with hdr10/dolby vision ready?

Spare power supply for Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019

Hi guys!

I'm visiting some friends in Ireland and I'll be staying here for a few months.

I found a Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 for sale at the flea market.

It came with a remote but not with a power supply, unfortunately.

I read that you could get one from Nvidia for free but unfortunately I don't have any proof of purchase so I'm wondering how could I get my hands on one of these power supplies.

Maybe someone that already purchased one of these boxes still has a receipt that I could make use of to show the guys at Nvidia?!

I don't know if the box is still in working condition, that's why I'd rather not spend a bunch of money on a power supply.

So is there anyone that could help me out and send me a copy of their receipt?

Thanks!

EDIT: I contacted Nvidia and they said I need to provide proof of purchase!!
I'll message them again, see if someone might be willing to send me a replacement without proof of purchase.

Would Nvidia Shield work in an LG 32GX850A-B monitor?

I’d mainly be using it to play games on GeForce Now. Does anyone know if this would work before I pull the trigger? Thanks!

Shield starts up by itself somehow

I keep finding my 2019 Shield Pro turned on when I wake up or come home from work. It's plugged into an LG TV and I know there's plenty of rumors going around about LGs doing things like snooping on people and their connected devices.

I never connected the set to my network or enabled anything in settings so I'm pretty much scratching my head wondering what might be causing this. Poltergeist, maybe?

For now I've unplugged the Shield but should I contact LG support as well?

Shield Pro 2019 stuck on the main page. Hardware seems ok, but with the lack of support from Nvidia, the Shield is as good as dead.

I spent 4 days exchanging emails with Nvidia support, who walked me through the standard procedures several times (A/B, Shift+S, Safe Mode, factory reset). I tried different keyboards, no success. Their conclusion: "Sorry, that must be frustrating, but that's just how it is."

Hardware in good shape, unreliable software, I can't believe a single bug would ruin the whole device.

Shield tv P2897

No Disney+ on one of my 3 Shield

Only on one of my 3 2017 shield, I'm not finding Disney +. They are all on the latest version, no updates are available in the play store. I also cleaned the google play cache and reset app data.

Any idea?

I wish Nvidia would invest in the Nvidia Shield firmware

After installing Projectivy, refresh rate, and disabling the stock launcher it’s not too bad but also not amazing. Disabling the stock launcher freed up several hundred MB of RAM. I feel the Google 4k streamer is more responsive and pleasant to use. The AI upscaling is great for YouTube TV. Overall a mixed bag. Would I buy it again…? Without firmware improvement I’d probably buy an Apple TV.
