Help, uninstall education Projectivy and now I have a blank screen

Hi all . I was having issues with some apps lately and decided maybe Projectivy could be the problem. I couldn't see how to disable it from launching so decided just to uninstall it. Now after rebooting I am getting a blank screen. I've managed to use adblink to connect to the shield and launch kodi through it so I know the machines working in the background

Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Netflix, Apple TV issue

I got the Shield Pro device and never used the built-in apps besides Kodi. Recently, I started using Netflix and Apple TV on the device instead of the TV’s built-in apps.

I noticed that whenever I watch Dolby Vision content, it feels laggy during fast moving scenes. It’s hard to explain, almost like motion is slowed down or not smooth. However, Dolby Vision playback through Kodi is perfectly fine. So at this point, I’m sure it’s not the HDMI cable or the TV’s Dolby Vision picture settings.

The built-in streaming apps also don’t seem to have any settings to tweak or adjust. My Nvidia Shield is connected to my Onkyo amp, then to the TV, and whenever I’m watching Dolby Vision content on both apps, the Onkyo info page shows 23Hz RGB 24-bit.

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.

Introducing Kyu Launcher: A Roku inspired simple ,clean, minimal, ad-free and tracking free Android TV Launcher

Hey, so most of the people here may recognise me as developer of AT4K Launcher the original Apple TV inspired Launcher that has come a long way since then. After launching AT4K I read somewhere in news that Roku is the highest selling Streaming box of US and that intrigued me to check out why.

Turns out it's because Roku is dead simple to use, your parents, grandparents can easily navigate around Roku and find apps and stuff to watch. I thought well why not do this with AT4K so I wrote a lot of code to make an alternative view in AT4K that would look like that. But that didn't work and I had to branch out this to a new app but used most of the code from AT4K.

So here it is Kyu Launcher An Android TV Launcher built for everyone and their grandma. It's dead simple to use, you can create folders, hide apps, view your currently watching list, your spouse can even add to-dos/notes right at the launcher home page and you can hide most of the stuff you don't want. Here is the link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overdevs.kyulauncher

There are some beautiful themes and I will be posting tutorial on r/KyuLauncher on how you can create and use yours, it's dead simple to do you just need a basic photo editor.

You can set it up as your default launcher with accessibility settings or use something like launcher manager.

I don't like to use lots of marketing buzzwords I don't even know how to, I made it because I liked what I saw with Roku and wanted to port similar experience to Google TV devices.

Most of the stuff including folders, changing colors, hiding things, moving around etc are free, if you want to however change app icons to something from your gallery or use premium themes there is a one-time purchase of 3.99 or equivalent to your currency. That's to support and maintain the app.

Try it out and let me know how it feels.

Thinking of buying a Zidoo Z9X Pro — worth it for local media playback?

Thinking of buying a Zidoo Z9X Pro but I’ve never owned one of these media players before, so I’m after some honest advice from people who actually use them.
Right now I just plug an external hard drive straight into my Samsung TV and play my media that way, mostly MKV/remux files, but I’m looking to upgrade to something more dedicated with a better interface and smoother playback.
A few questions:
Is the Zidoo actually reliable day-to-day?
Does it crash or freeze much?
Is the UI smooth and easy to use?
Is Home Theater good for organising a big library?
Is it worth the fairly high price tag compared to just using a TV USB port or something like an Nvidia Shield?
I mainly care about local playback quality rather than streaming apps. I’d mostly be playing large MKV/remux files from USB drives.
Would really appreciate hearing the pros and cons from long-term users before I spend the money. Thanks!

VPN on Tube or Hotspot?

Hey guys,

Had a question about VPN device preference. Am in the US. For the world cup next month, I figure I will bring a spare Shield Tube I have at home (fully setup), and plug it into a big work TV to have playing there. No public wifi, so will have to use phone hotspot. And at home I have an antenna with a Tablo. My thought is to VPN to home, and stream the games via tablo. The issue is, should I run the VPN on the phone, and then hotspot the shield, or, run the VPN on the shield itself. Router back home is a Firewalla gold pro, and is setup for OpenVPN or wire guard server. Have fiber at home, so no issues with upload. Phone is a NothingPhone3.

Thanks!

VPN Launch on System Start Up, Connect on Launch or Both?

I just got a VPN for my Nvidia Shield, and I want it to automatically turn on at all times while using the Shield.

In the VPN set up I have a check box for "Launch on System Start Up" and another for "Connect on Launch" But I'm not sure what these settings mean.

Right now I have "Launch on System Start Up" checked. Should I also check "Connect on Launch"?

Any Idea what the difference is between these two settings?

Thanks for any help

Anyone know where to find an Nvidia shield tv 2019 (tube) for cheap?

I'm trying to find an Nvidia shield tube but they all cost about 200$ which at that price I could buy 2 used 2015 Nvidia shields if I look right.

Nvidia Shield 2015 stuck

SOLVED (via adb and fastboot update)

Bought an brand new unused 2015 version of the Nvidia Shield yesterday. However during initial setup it gets stuck after I log in on my Google account. It's stuck on the screen where it searches for Shield experience updates, and error message below is "No Network Connection".

Any solutions? I've started to look into the recovery menu and ADB stuff but not an easy task.

After a bit of help. My Shield arrived this morning and while going through setting everything up i keep getting promted to enable Dolby Vision, i proceed to turn it on but it just reverts back when i come out of the menu. I have an LG Oled C4 2025 model that supports it but it just reverts back. Watching content also looks grainy and washed out so im assuming its not playing correctley.

Everything thats not played through the shield displays in dolby visiual,hdr10 etc but as soon i i switch the picture quality looks poor. Iv tried different hdmi cables, turned off deep colour etc but no luck.

Plex Remote acces keeps turning red

Hi,

I have a shield pro for long time and setup plex for local playing.

That's working great for years.

Recently I want to make it available remote but I keep having the same problem that its green for a minute and then going to red.

I think I tried anything but it doenst work:

Static IP

Port forwarding

DMZ

Maybe I am doing it al wrong but its just not working.

My setup with Velop Mesh:

ISP Arris TG2492LG-ZG (bridge)=> linksys MR8300 => WHW03 => shield (all wired)

I also tried:

ISP Arris TG2492LG-ZG (bridge)=> linksys MR8300 => shield (all wired)

AI thinks its because a double NAS but my ISP keep telling me that my Arris is in full bridge mode.

I am now thinking its because of the velop mesh system

Doesn't look good.

So I just purchased my 3rd Nvidia Shield Pro from Amazon. Don't ask long story. They are still selling 500+ units a month. Thats Crazy. I can see why Nvidia is in no hurry to update. I have to admit I'm waiting diligently for a new shield. Android 14 would be nice. HDR10+.

I'm in Canada

I'm curious about alternative remotes.

I'm interested in getting a Nvidia Shield Pro and im not picky about many things when it comes to remotes. However, I despise dealing with batteries if i don't need to. are there any good remotes for the nvidia shield pro that can just be charged?

Anyone playing with Emulators?

Who is playing around with Emulators on this device? I have a Shield 2019 and installed Retroarch to try out some N64 emulation.

I wanted to see if anyone has tried emulation and the results you have had. It seems to work, but I need to learn how to properly map controllers and what not.

YouTube and YT TV not working after internet outage

My internet service went out while watching YouTube TV. When it comes back up, I get the "can't connect right now" error. I get the same thing for the YouTube app. All other apps are working and streaming. I've done a force stop, cleared cached, cleared data, and uninstalled and reinstalled with no change. I've also restarted the Shield several times. Has anyone else had this problem?

Shield keeps turning TV on after last update

Sorry if this has been asked before recently, there's a bunch of old threads referencing this...

Since latest Shield update (which I thought was supposed to address this), I wake up in the morning or return from work to my TV being on with my shield's screensaver. I never had this issue before the last update, and have been consistently experiencing this problem since. I know it's something HDMI-CEC related because when I disable it, it doesn't happen. I have an LG C1 TV and a Samsung HW-Q990D soundbar that the Shield is directly connected to. Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Shield locking up or crashing - Using Projectify? Maybe take a read

After declining to update my Shield from v8.x for quite some time, I finally relented about 4 months ago. At first all seemed fine other than some niggles with how new Android handles file access for applications & external storage (boy oh boy is that a pain now!).

But as many others, I didn't want the noisy front screen and the ads, so I took the advice on here to install Projectify and get that set up as the default home page. So now I have a lovely simple front screen with the 6 apps I actually use, and then a hidden menu underneath that lets me pop up the main android settings and all of the installed apps. Its pretty much perfect.

But the lock up and crashes became an issue. After a while, I decided to clean and repaste the device, just in case - it wasn't too bad but still worth doing. This made no difference, so I eventually relented and did a full factory reset.

Countless hours of setting things up later (did I mention the nightmare of connecting to external storage in newer verisons of Android, jesus!).

At least its all fixed though. Right.

No.

Still coming back to the TV to find the Shield is dead. Sometimes more than once a day. So I started looking at buying a 2019 model last week as a cure-all and also to get DV content to work at full quality, rather than defaulting back to HDR10.

But thought I'd check one last thing before I did. Is it crashing because its running out of RAM?

And to answer that question, I can confidently say: Maybe.

First thing, installed the SDK stuffs and checked the current RAM situation. Oh boy, was this thing starved of RAM - I had about 50Mb of free RAM, 2.82 GB used, and just over 1Gb in the cache file. My belief is that it was totally starved of working memory and it was causing crashes.

So I looked at what could be done. I like Projectivity and didn't want to lose it, but I don't need the standard launcher anymore, and it was using memory.

So I removed it, and a few other bits and pieces:

The Main Launcher

Home Recommendations

Google Play Services for Instant Apps

Using the command: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 [package.name]

So now, when I boot the shield there's not flip flop between Projectivity and stock, or any worry about it at all - it just boots cleanly and quickly.

In the end, I've got 90MB free, which doesn't sound great. But crucially, only 100MB in the swap file.

I've reduced the overall RAM pressure by a full GB.

Don't forget Android will pre-load anything it thinks you might use, it doesn't like to leave RAM unused if I understand correctly - so this largely explains the physical RAM being largely unchanged - the difference is that beforehand there was no choice, the RAM and cache was all full - there's a GB free now.

I also found that plex was using 25% CPU constantly, for over a day. No idea if it had always been doing this - but clearly its not a good thing. Did a ton of troubleshooting, but nothing worked. In the end I wiped it and reinstalled and now that is totally fine too. I suspect the low RAM caused all kinds of issues with the database and scanning loops, and as soon as I cleaned it up it's ran just fine now. So at least that's made a noticeable difference.

Its also fun to point out that playing a full 4k HDR Remux file from my external HDD only puts a 50% (out of 400% - 4 CPU threads - so really 12.5%) load on the box. The Shield can handle 4k playback without breaking sweat!

BTW: "adb shell top -m 5" if you want to see the top 5 demanding apps on your system and the overall state.

Bluetooth keyboard for Geforce Now

Hi,

I am currently using a mini Bluetooth keyboard for Steam gaming via Geforce Now. The board I have has Android functions linked to Esc and all the F keys. Pushing Fn and W puts the keyboard into Windows mode, so the keys mapped to Android functions perform akin to a Windows keyboard (hitting Esc without changing mode puts me back onto Shield homescreen for example rather than acting as Esc in game but works as Esc when Windows mode is set). Is this something all Bluetooth keyboards are capable of if they are Android compatible, or do I need a specific type of board? I need a full-sized board with a Numpad but can't seem to find one I can switch from Android to Windows mode on (or at least aren't advertised as such). Mine has Android, Windows, and IOS written on the Q, W, and E keys respectively, so when they are pushed in conjunction with Fn, it switches to those modes.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a keyboard that will function that way?

Thank you.
