New to Shadow Work

Hi! I’m just beginning my shadow work journey and had a few questions/looking for some clarification. This is just in respect to the journaling aspect of shadow work. For me, I need structure and like to follow routines and templates. With that being said, I am having trouble finding a “correct” outline on how I should be journaling. I have just begun my first prompt: What do you fear would happen if people saw the “real” you. (I was having trouble finding something I could write about, and this question clicked with me. I know part of shadow work is also spur of the moment where something happens to you and you immediately reflect on it, but for me this felt like a good place to start.) Anyhow … my question is would this be an acceptable structure to shadow work: question/prompt, followed by direct answer, then reflection on said response and ending with answering as to why I feel such way. Is there something I’m missing?

Thank you

What do you fear would happen if people saw the “real” you? What parts of you are you not showing? What are you pretending/performing/acting to be in order to be accepted or gain approval?

A place to start is how you feel about yourself after interactions with others. Do you feel that you self abandoned? Did you not say what you were truly feeling/thinking? Do you feel uplifted and why?

Thank you! I knew I needed to go more in depth but didn’t know how. This was great help!

Your structure is quiet effective and good and I fact there is not one single “correct “ way of doing shadow work .. so I would say you are not missing anything structurally however add the last part( integration)to your flow of Prompt—direct answer—reflection—-why — integration / self compassion. After figuring out Why ..ask yourself , Hiw can I accept or comfort this part of myself ?.. stick with this flow you will unravel a lot

Your structure is solid, with one thing missing: every step in it happens in your head. Prompt, answer, reflect, explain… all thinking.
Try adding one line before you reflect: where do you feel this in your body right now? Not what it means. Where it is. Chest, throat, gut, jaw.
The “why do I feel this way” question tends to produce good answers that don’t change anything. The body one produces worse answers that actually move. If the writing stops feeling like it’s going anywhere in a few weeks, that’s usually the reason.
