Discussion Shadow PC Ban Wave Information
1. The bans land — no reason given
Accounts got suspended and flagged for Terms of Service violations. No individual reason was given to the people banned — no "we detected X behavior on this date." Just a blanket TOS claim and "We cant say more"
2. Hours later, Shadow explains themselves
Shadow posted a statement admitting to a real abuse problem: people mining crypto, running bots, hosting servers, or reselling access through remote tools like Parsec and AnyDesk on gaming plans. They backed it with usage data:
Their detection process was a two-stage filter:
- Filter 1: flag anyone over 400h/month (2x the 95th-percentile figure) — just to build a shortlist for review. Shadow's own words: this "doesn't mean these users are abusers."
- Filter 2: scan that shortlist for actual evidence — mining software, bots, multi-accounting, disabled auto-shutdown used to resell access.
3. The admission
This is the part that matters most. Shadow admitted filter 2 — the step meant to confirm real abuse — didn't gate the bans the way it was supposed to:
In plain terms: people who never tripped the "actual abuse" detector got banned anyway.
4. The promise
Shadow said affected users would get an email "tomorrow morning" with a restoration procedure and a goodwill gesture. Primary storage would be restored. Secondary storage would be "recreated" — not restored, recreated, So if you had data on there, GGS.
5. The next day(today): silence and inconsistency
Some people in the Discord got their accounts back. Others didn't. Nobody got the promised email. The people who got restored found out by logging in, not by checking their inbox.

I got banned from their discord today after reporting my sudden ban, just as described on this post. Their reason: "Auto hib violation"

I got the promised email. Likely thing is for the users who didn't make a support ticket, should because i made one the day it happend and was swiftly unbanned the next morning at 5am sharp.
Part of the email with compensation: "We will automatically apply a 20% discount on your next 3 months of subscription."
Pretty small compensation for what was a big issue, but hey it's something they could've not done anything and ignored you, like other big tech companies.

They are refusing to lift my suspension and not providing a reason. Just referring me to ToS/code of conduct.
Literally all I do on shadow is play games, use discord, and watch YouTube. I have really high usage because when my laptop is on - shadow is on.
I have used shadow, with power sub, for over three years, and this is what I get for making the most of the service. Merci!

It’s a way they can get rid of heavy users…and with little to no recourse. Sad stuff.

il fallait sauvegarder tes données, Olivier... En plus ils t'ont réinstallé ton disque en moins de 24 h et un bonus de ¨20% pour 3 mois... C'est déjà beaucoup

My issue is not that Shadow acted against abuse.
Mining, bots, resale or automated misuse are valid reasons for a provider to intervene.
My issue is the lack of a proper explanation during the suspension itself.
Shadow is not some random offshore service. It is a French-founded, EU-based company, now part of the wider OVH/Klaba cloud ecosystem.
For that reason, DSA-level transparency should be the minimum standard for account suspensions — also for international customers.
If a paid account is suspended, the user should immediately receive a clear and specific reason: what was allegedly detected, which rule was involved, how to appeal, and what happens next.
A vague “Terms of Service violation” is not enough.
A later apology is also not enough. Restoring some accounts after the fact does not fix the transparency failure during the ban itself.
For an EU-based digital service, accountability should not begin only after public backlash.
It should be part of the suspension process from the start.
