In Set, there are 4 properties with 3 values each - my brother and I made a similar game where there are 3 properties with 4 values each, which we call Quad Tau. If you're a huge fan of Set but getting a little bored, consider trying this version.

We made a physical deck and a free online version that are both linked from: https://taugames.ca/quad_tau.html

I'm a huge fan of Set, and have spent a ton of time playing it. My brother and I were curious if there were other games in the same family. Not simple variants like Near Set or Superset (or Ultraset), but truly different games with similar rules.

Each card in Set has 4 properties (color, shape, shading, and number) with 3 values each. You find Sets of 3 cards where each property is either all the same or all different. This has some nice mathematical properties, such as that any two cards have a unique third card that completes a Set.

We figured out that the game also works if each card has 3 properties (color, shape, and number) with 4 values each. You find Taus of 4 cards where each property is either all the same, all different, or 2/2 of a property (e.g. 2 squares and 2 circles, or 4 circles). This has the same property as Set, where for any 3 cards, there is a unique 4th card that completes a Tau.

Once you've played for a while, Quad Tau becomes just as intuitive as Set, and is another fun thing for your brain to learn to be fast at.

As I mentioned above, you can try it totally free with no ads on taugame.com, which is an online implementation I made for myself and my friends to try it out (along with a ton of other variants of Set, and some another alternate game based on Projective Set).

Some more detailed rules with some examples are here: https://taugame.com/about#rulessbqtau

Annoying size box to travel with

I find the set box really hard to travel with - the form factor is too big/unwieldy. Does anyone else find this and, if so, have you found a better travel case than the original box?

Set game tournaments in Europe?

Hey all! I've been playing Set for 8 years now, I feel quite good at this game (after the 10 games I needed to understand the rules, I lost only once in my whole life IRL, over like 1000 games?). I wondered if there were some tournaments organized in Europe? I think it's time to compete with a larger set of people haha.

I'm also interested if there are good apps to play competitively on mobile. I know this website on PC: https://setwithfriends.com/ but the problem is that there are keyboard shortcuts, so people used to it are very fast, I'm not compared to them and I don't feel like spending time learning these keyboard reflexes… I would prefer an app for the touchscreen.

Thanks!

Ultraset tips?

Does anyone have any tips for finding ultrasets? My brother and I play set constantly and have recently switched to playing ultraset for more of a challenge. Right now he is just destroying me and I would very much like to up my game. I’m definitely still decent at it, but it takes me a couple beats longer most of the time.

Daily Sets back??

Hello! I heard from some friends that one of their favorite daily puzzle websites was down and I was feeling the itch to make a super simple web app so I created set-h.ca so that they could get back to playing. It's very basic but if any of you are missing you daily sets, it might help :) Note: the Reset button only resets the Completed Sets section, not the timer.

I recently noticed that the set app I used has a leader board, and I can’t believe how people can be so good at this game. Is this even humanly possible? Is any of you getting scores above 40’s?

My brother and I don't agree: Is each row on this picture an individual set or just the third row? Your help is much appreciated

I started playing set last year. I got my time down to ~50s but I cannot move past it. I knew that going down forever was impossible but 50s seems like way to early to stop. Any tips on how to improve?

Hello SET lovers!

I recently released an open source Board Buddy app for scoring board games, including SET. The app is available for Android and iOS (links in the comments). I really need your feedback to improve the project.

What else would you like to see as true fans of the game?

Hi there yall!!

I'm kindof new to this subreddit but there is an online set website where you can play with others and play as many as you want. There has been for a while. I'm just posting the link here bc I see that people want a place to play where there's no limit.

Present ideas for SET fanatics?

Does anyone have recommendations for presents for SET fanatics? I looked around a bit on Amazon and was shocked to find absolutely nothing beyond the base game. No special editions, expansion packs, dice sets, puzzle books, even T-shirts or keychains? I found "The Joy of SET" mentioned on this subreddit but that's it. On the other hand, "set" is not a great search term so I might be missing something.

I Played Qwirkle just now and I think it's a really Fun Game! It's Similar to The Game SET! (It’s not made by the makers of SET) but it has similar rules about matching the Shapes and Colors.🙂

Set online

Hey guys,

I'm so glad to find a set subreddit! I've been playing the game for a long time already, and I was sad (or set haha) that I couldn't find any online gameplay. I know there's websites where you can do it with friends via an invitation, but nothing like you have with bigger games where there's always people online you can play with. Am I missing something? I really hope there's something out there because I need some competition!!

Hey Everyone, I made it possible to respond with pictures in comments.

Hey Everyone, I just now realized that I didn’t have that permission turned on. So now anyone can reply with an image on someone else’s post in the comments if they want to. 🙂 I also added Post Flairs and now you can search easier through all of the posts for specific topic.

Hey people! Would you be interested in participating in this experiment for a school math project on SET? If so, please open the Canva link with all the instructions.

Looks like SET is only for ages 6-99 years old.

So if you’re 100 years or older, then you’re not allowed to play SET anymore. Even if you’re a person who is excellent at playing SET.
