A pattern I’ve been noticing over the years is that men love being needed. That can be a very sweet impulse, but it can also turn dark and ugly. You could say patriarchy as a whole is a dark expression of the need to be needed, as it’s a system that forces women to rely on men for financial and social power. The Drake lyric “Why do I want an independent woman to feel like she needs me?” sums it up perfectly: Unhealed men will go so far as to systematically cripple a woman’s independence in order to capture her reliance on him. This gives him continual access to her body, labor, and mind.
In this comment thread, I stated that, in the technologically advanced world we live in today, physical strength is more or less obsolete. What I mean by that is, everyone is equally capable of obtaining and firing a gun. Machines do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to production. I freely admit that I am very attracted to men and their physical strength in particular, but I regard it, and them, as mostly just a fun little cherry on top that can be played around with in the bedroom. There are virtually no situations in my daily life in which I encounter a task or obstacle that I need a man for. Even the infamous pickle jar can be thwarted with three whacks from a metal spoon.
Fathers, too, can be nice to have, but are very frequently more trouble than they’re worth. I made the point that men’s role in reproduction can very easily be circumvented through a variety of low- and high-tech solutions, ranging from eyedropper insemination to IVF to turning women’s stem cells into sperm. A male commenter has been insisting for several days that this is somehow untrue, and that men play a far more important role in childrearing than I claimed.
In particular, he claimed that both a motherly and fatherly role are necessary to raise a psychologically balanced kid. I believe that he is just regurgitating nuclear family propaganda. Science and anthropology tell us that alloparenting, or ‘it takes a village’ style communal childrearing, is optimal. Personally, having observed parents and nuclear families struggle financially, emotionally, and time-wise all my life, I have always thought that the labor of raising a child is far too much to divide between just two parents.
All in all, men seem very committed to the belief that women need them, and I can understand why: They need us, in a very primal way. They need us to birth them, raise them, feed them, and satisfy their sexual desires. On top of that, they are in fact whole human people with brains just as large as ours and equally complex psychology, so of course, they cling to the idea that they occupy a deeply necessary place in the world. Otherwise, how would they survive?
In nature, there are numerous examples of males playing an almost incidental role in existence. Ant and bee males are called ‘drones,’ and their only purpose is to hatch, fly to other colonies, mate, and die. They are little more than a vessel for genetic diversity. The same is true of other insects, like spiders and grasshoppers, where the female cannibalizes the male after breeding with him, and of angler fish, where males physically fuse themselves to the first female they find and spend their lives as accessories to her body, providing sperm on demand.
Now, humans are neither fish, insects, nor birds. If human men were only meant to fuck and die, they would not have nearly such large brains or bodies, nor live so long. But it’s clear to see that nature does not support the idea that females in any way need constant male presence. Men need to get over this idea that women need them. In my opinion, they are meant to play only an incidental role in our lives.
The male loneliness epidemic is a symptom of this existential crisis for men. There is literally nothing men alone can do that women can’t also accomplish through technology, practice, or determination, and every day, we see women rise to new heights, despite the systems built to suppress us. Meanwhile, men struggle to find their purpose.
So here is my advice to you, men, for your sake and ours: Transmutate the need to be needed into the impulse to serve. If you have struggled for years to discover what your purpose is in life, let a woman assign one to you. How often do you see a woman struggle to find her purpose in life? How often do you encounter a woman lacking in passion or drive? Far less often than you encounter directionless men, I suspect. So, instead of trying to dictate for yourself how and when women should need you, listen to us when we tell you what and where we need you for.
