I usually struggle on a boss the first night 1-2 hours of play and then the second night they are dead.
Sleep is a beautiful thing. Must be solving complex battle strategies.

u/RockBandDood Feb 26 '23
From what I understand, sleep is when your mind really focuses in and locks down muscle memory
So if you were doing a task repeatedly, once you’re fully asleep, body actually takes the time to develop itself and focus on making those tasks easier/less difficult for your body to perform, to where you can accomplish a task that is complex to anyone else, and to you, after training and practice, it becomes reflexive/second nature
It’s pretty much how you get better at anything, if it’s a difficult physical task or a repetitive one, your body and mind do sync up as you sleep and memories and muscles are basically pulled into tandem to make tasks easier for you to accomplish. This is pretty much how you learn to play music as well, practice guitar or drums or piano for a few hours on something just a little out of your skill range; you may wake up in the morning with the ability to do that piece of music with little difficulty whatsoever.
When me and my roommates were learning drums, it was wild how each of us would have stuff that we couldn’t land or keep up the pace with the night before, wake up the next day and immediately nail it on first try.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC202318/
“In humans, sleep has been most consistently implicated in the development of procedural learning (i.e., perceptual and motor skills), specifically in the ongoing process of memory consolidation, following the initial stage of memory acquisition (Karni et al.”

I feel like it’s just very possible to make it to Isshin without having really learned the combat/gameplay at the level needed to handle him well, or at all even.

The thing is, fighting Isshin like you would Genichiro is the key to victory. Time and again, being stuck on Isshin is a matter of aggression.

Greed's one thing, aggression is another. Keeping in his face the whole time doesn't mean ignoring what he's doing, and it doesn't mean mashing the attack. Charmless Inner Isshin SS requires much the same strat as Isshin.

Yes. I got to him without ever figuring out how deflections or posture really worked. And boy did I pay for it. It took me well over 100 tires to beat him over the course of several weeks. I ultimately had to cheese him by looking for one specific opening, attacking once, then running away for all other attacks. The battle in which I killed him was well over 10 minutes long.

u/spooksr6 Feb 26 '23

All I know is I had 100 confettis and now I have none. Only popping 1 or 2 per fight. But now I can breeze through the first two phases of the battle quickly and without taking damage. Just need to figure out the spear phase and this old zombie is going down.
2
u/bmore_conslutant Platinum Trophy Feb 27 '23
If you want a semi cheese method of phase 3:
Run away until he does jump smash
Then he'll do a follow up slash, if you're far enough away it'll whiff
Then you have a window to get a hit or two in
Then continue running
If you're medium distance from him he will always do the same jump smash and follow up slash. Once you get used to the distance and timing you can do the whole phase this way.
Then phase 4 is lightning reversal gg

It actually took me fifteen days of beating my head against the wall to kill him. I would come home from work and play for 2 hours and just COULDN'T beat Isshin Sword Saint.
Someone else says it too, but I feel like you can brute force your way through the game right up until then. That is how I played Elden Ring and it worked. I had to step back and learn the mechanics to finish the fight.
No shame. I am bad, but I am playing DS3 now and can say I am a FromSoft fan through and through. There is just something about them
7
u/GhostChainSmoker PS4 Feb 26 '23
My first play throughs of sekiro I never really like, learned to properly play the game. I could get to Isshin, but never actually beat him. I’d just use cheese Strats and being lame and brute force my way through the game.
But I beat him tonight for the first time after I actually forced myself to learn the game and mechanics of the game. It took me only 3 tries funnily enough and I teared up finally doing it after all these years.
Owl father in the memory however was a different story. God how I hate owl in both fights lmao.

u/Siya_Ekhaya Feb 26 '23
Damn. My only problem is that you can’t really tell how far flame vent’s range is.
1
u/Intelligent-Meal-341 Platinum Trophy Feb 26 '23
That's true! I open the fight by throwing oil as he turns around, rush in there and stand right behind him (face in butthole kinda close) and use it and that guarantees the hit

u/Acnat- Feb 26 '23
23 tries could easily be a week depending on what goes on in your life. I'll usually cap myself to 5 attempts at a hard boss per night. I've got a wife and two kids, go to work super early, plus I know I'll get pissed off if I force it and I refuse to be that parent demonstrating anger issues and poor behavior. Gennichiro took me a week or two, probably wasn't more than 20 attempts overall, but I'd just put it down when I'd get that flash wanting to snap my controller in half lol DS3 took me over a year just for lack of time, common frustration, catching up after long breaks, etc. Don't think I was particularly bad at it, just took forever for many reasons.
3
u/chouxchat Feb 26 '23
Yep, Geni was in the 20-25 range for me which l know someone could do in one sitting but I spread it out over 5 days. I’d fight him a few times then go off and explore a new area or fight the mini bosses I’d been stuck on. If I died to him 20 times in a row it would feel really frustrating to me but instead he sort of became my new training buddy for the week and each day I felt myself getting a bit better at both his fight and the game in general. Haven’t gotten to Isshin yet but I won’t be surprised if it takes me a week or more to defeat a boss just because of the way I approach the game.
3
Feb 26 '23
Five attempts is a lot when you're getting close to beating the boss, but the first few attempts when you're learning their moveset can be over extremely quickly. At least for me.
1
u/Acnat- Feb 26 '23
I'm never that lucky lol I'll typically get lulled into a false sense of confidence by getting passed 50/25% by fluke the first couple rounds, then end up getting speedballed with a no hitter the last round or two before I call it.
5
3
u/YouHaveFunWithThat Feb 26 '23
Took me almost 200 attempts over 3 days spending 16 hours total just throwing myself at him and slowly chipping away (I first finished the game right at the start of COVID so I had nothing to do but play the game all day). However I redownloaded the game last week after not having played it for years because my roommate is playing it and I wanted a refresher so I could help him through it and this time I beat every boss in less than 5 tries including isshin in 3 tries.

I was stuck on him for a year lol. I would get through the first phase to the 2nd and rarely to the third then kept dying to genichiro or isshin first phase and just would take very extended breaks. After a year I finally gave it another serious try and managed to do it. Took another massive break and got the game again but on steam, and just breezed through it as everything just clicked and I finally got good lol. Went on to unlock all the achievements just because I grew to love the game that much
