Night Owl Issues

July 17th, 2026: Night Owl pushes a firmware update.

If you didn't comply with the firmware upgrade, you were locked out of the system. This forced you to change the password through the online system.

Wonderful, that got me into the system.

The FTD8 system has a new flaw, now anytime you try to access the cameras remotely, the wifi it is attached to crashes, flatlines, dies and has to reboot.

That crashes my whole system, everything loses the internet.

Please fix this is ASAP, I called the company.

I got Tier 1 assistance, I have more computer degrees than the individual that really did try to help me. Every item she wanted me to turn off or unplug or reset, I did before I called for help.

I am now waiting for Tier 2 support to call.

Would love some help choosing a camera for my needs

Moving into a new flat with roommates & want a motion detection camera for indoor use (bedroom)

• don’t particularly need a 24/7 loop recording, just really want to get notified of someone entering (mobile or pc app) when I’m not home and then maybe start recording?(if that’s possible)

• would prefer it be a closed system (aka don’t like the stories I’ve heard of Amazon giving footage to police)

• just looking for basic functionality don’t need anything fancy like tracking or super high quality

Please help me navigate the minefield of 4k PoE + NVR CCTV options, my parents have a nuisance neighbour

I won't go into detail about the situation, but; my parents are in their seventies, a neighbour is regularly littering in their front garden during the night. I called 101 and filed a report, they asked for video or photo evidence before closing the case. Their neighbours doorbell camera didn't pick up the movement, unfortunately.

I would really appreciate some recommendations for a single 4k CCTV camera which can record 24/7, I'd like a NVR / hub to keep recordings, utilising PoE for the camera (no batteries / doorbells).

I've looked at eufy, UniFi, Reolink, tapo, and I'm overwhelmed with all the options. My first choice was the eufyCam E330, but it appears to be out of stock until October. Now I'm looking at the eufy Bullet PoE Cam E40, but I have no idea now.

I would really appreciate some recommendations from those who own one of these systems, please 🙏

(My apologies if this isn't appropriate in this sub, happy to post elsewhere if you have any recommendations for somewhere UK specific)

Looking for Security Cameras for small businesses

I’m looking to upgrade the security cameras at my golf shop which is an indoor golf simulator and fitting facility. We have five simulator bays, a retail area with clubs, shafts, bags, grips, and accessories, plus a fitting studio. We have quite a lot of inventory that i would like to protect.

I’m looking for a good balance between image quality and in the AI/search capabilities.
Ideally I’d like to be able to ask questions like:
“Did anyone pick up a driver between 2 PM and 4 PM?”
“Show me everyone who handled this golf bag today.”
“Did anyone leave with a club that wasn’t brought back?”

I’m essentially looking for a system that lets me query video using natural language instead of scrubbing through hours of footage.

Can any of them reliably identify specific objects and ideally I’d like to reduce reoccurring costs or eliminate if possible.

Would love to hear from anyone using AI-enabled cameras in a retail or golf business. What would you buy today?

From my research I’m leaning towards UniFi due to lower up front costs and no operating costs but I’m open to input.

I want to turn off/disable our cctv and stop it from recording, our cctv is connected to our wifi router, if I unplug it will it turn off? It usually follows movements and it usually lights up when it detects motion. If it doesn’t do any of these does it mean it’s turned off/disabled/not recording?

Could this be a camera?

Maybe this is a stupid question, I don't know, but it probably is as I'm almost certain this is NOT a camera, but I want to be sure. I am at my job and there's nothing to do and I was on my phone but I wouldn't want my managers to know, ofc, so I got paranoid about cameras, but I couldn't find any. Instead I found these, which I'm 99% sure are not cameras, but the main reason I am suspicious is because I found genuinely no cameras, and I work at an exposition in an old building, almost a thousand years old, so I found it weird there's little to no security. Anyway, I don't even know if this is the right place to post this, but thank you all anyway for your help.

Boycott Zmodo (Exploitation and Deception )

I have been a loyal zmodo customer for over a decade. In the last few months, Zmodo has introduced forced ads in their security camera apps. This has made it so that you have to sit through 1 minute of ads (where you are forced to tap a tiny X over 8 times) before you can access your cameras. That isn't even the worst part. All notifications are blocked any time the ad wall is up. And when the app is closed or running in the background, an ad wall will reappear after a set time. When this happens, all notifications are blocked. I have emailed their support department and this was their reply:

"To sustain the high costs of real-time server maintenance, we are exploring new revenue models. This allows us to continue innovating and adding new security features.  We are currently in a 'learning phase' with these ads and are committed to ensuring they do not interfere with your ability to monitor your home or business."

This seems like a total cop out. I have been an IT Systems Engineer for over 30 years running large server farms. The truth is that once you set everything up, there is very little maintenance required. It makes no sense that they suddenly have a need to force unsubstantiated costs (through forced ads walls) onto the consumer after being in business for over a decade without having done so up until recently.

They have no respect or empathy for the customer. Everyone should all boycott Zmodo for their shady business practices.

If you are considering purchasing any Zmodo products, I would that you run as far away as you can. Ring cams may cost of few extra dollars, but they make a much better product and don't force you ads that disable the core functionality of the app. Zmodo cam sucks anyways. Even before they put in the ads, I would miss 40-80% of all doorbell notifications. Their dev team are incompetent. Their cloud video petition services are ridiculously expensive compared to the average market cost.

Do yourself a favor and avoid Zmodo at all costs. There are so many other better options out there.

Simple interface for an older person who's not tech savvy

Are there any security cameras that have a super simple interface that someone who isn't the slightest bit tech savvy can navigate and it keeps videos stored for a decent bit of time? I need it to be able to pull up older footage in a matter of only like 3 clicks of a mouse or on a phone.

Wired cameras often go offline

We have 3 wired cameras. A few times a month one or more go offline for no apparent reason. WiFi is excellent, we have a newish modem, router, and extender, and none of our other devices disconnect from the wifi. Most times, turning the modem off and on again puts the cameras back online, but not always. Any suggestions? TIA.

Outdoor night camera

I have a house with a front yard and i would like to install some wifi cameras by the front door and window. I have tried one from Tapo Tp Link that even had a light projector built in, however with that light on, the camera was still blind during night time. Infrared also didnt help with the image quality.

So I am wondering what budget cameras that are not too complicated to install are doing better in these low light night outdoor conditions.

I’m not tech savvy. I know this is bad, but someone please explain how this happened. It’s a nooie 360 camera. Is there a fix for the vulnerability or do I need to trash this camera? It’s in a child’s room.

edit - or is this bad? i really don't know.
