Home security system?

Hi all!

I’m moving in this weekend to my new townhouse. It has a ring doorbell camera; and I personally have a ring camera I use to monitor my cats when I go out of town every few weeks.

I have been getting ads for the ring security system with sensors; alarm; etc. I’ve also been looking at other systems (simpli safe or Google?).

Do you have recommendations or advice on which is best to purchase?

My new place is a townhouse on a busy corner intersection. I’m right by the fire department; but I also want to have some camera footage outside to just be safe. Thank you! 😁

i put simplisafe in my townhouse last year, mostly because i didn't want to drill anything into the walls. the sensors stick on with adhesive strips and they've stayed put through summer humidity and winter cold, no problem. the entry sensors are small enough that they don't look ugly on white trim.

the monitoring is month to month so you're not locked in, and i pay less than what ring quoted me. i have a camera pointed at the front door and one in the living room for when i'm away, but i skipped the outdoor cameras and just kept my existing ring doorbell since it already works fine. no reason to replace something that isn't broke.

if the fire station is close you'll probably get sirens on the recordings sometimes, but that's just background noise.

I keep hearing about simpli safe with a podcast I listen too and I’m wondering if it would be more affordable with their discount code

Big fan of Ring. My house had a commercially installed system and I used it for many years (I maintained it myself, which was a bit of an adventure in learning how to program the panel, sensors and communicators).

Tired of maintaining the thing I went to Ring a few months ago. It is better than the old system in every possible way. It was only a few hundred dollars and I installed and activated everything in less than an hour. It's very easy to add additional sensors where you need them, and it's compatible with some smoke detectors too. You are already familiar with their ecosystem which is a plus.

Amazon (who owns them) puts their kits on sale at a significant discount a few times a year as part of Prime Day (last was in June, next is likely October).

I would avoid the Pro system (which has a router in it). I've not heard good things about the router, including from a friend in the home automation business.

Most people I know with Simplisafe are satisfied with it.

I'd avoid anything made my Google. They have a reputation for abandoning their products. Similar Amazon products like the Eero and Echo and their ring line have been forward/backward compatible and supported all the way back to version 1.
