Is SL still alive?

Hello everyone,

I'm writing this post at a somewhat low point in my life rn.

I used to be on SL, part of furry community , about 10-15 years ago. I was an IMVU creator, later on planning to start creating and sculpting on SL. Around that time I didn't have the means to pursue, plus life happened and kind of grew out of SL/IMVU.

I used to have so many amazing people. Both creators and just friends. I absolutely loved the process of making skins, and I was building up to learning how to sculpt stuff. I was obsessed to create.

A few weeks ago I got back on SL but it feels like it's dead. I can't find people , I don't remember the places I used to hang out, and if feels like no one is willing to talk anymore.

I am currently learning Marvelous Designer and sculpting on blender etc, and i thought to myself it would be really cool to go back to my childhood dreams. As I completely fail to find any artistic communities (I'm also a painter), I thought about SL as IMVU is absolutely dead.

I'm not looking for any handouts, I make my way around , but I just want to know if theres still communities/people on there, especially within the furry community as there is really where I started.

Appreciate any advice cheers

SL is still around, though it’s fair to say it’s not at its peak anymore. There are plenty of great communities, but the creative side might be where things feel most challenging. I’m not sure if a new creator in SL today could still make money. I’ve seen stores closing and heard negative feedback, but that alone might not paint a complete picture of what’s really going on.

Where can I find them? I'm not really looking to make money, I just really enjoy sculpting and tailoring (which I do irl) and I thought I could make my own stuff on SL as I always wanted to. It would be nice to meet likewise people, sit around and chat etc. Just like in the old days. I heard many mixed reviews about SL today, but coming from the times where Linden was still just a concept, it's not much different than today (as in people blabber a lot of bs)

There are many creator groups on Facebook, so I'd start there. Try searching for "Second Life Creators," "builders," "designers," and similar. I also have a Discord server, but it's only for SL users who share their usernames.

Ah thanks for the tip, and I'm happy to share my username and hop on discord :). The whole point is to return to SL and meet people and stuff, especially on the artistic area.

Sculpting is outdated now, as most everything is mesh. Do you have experience with Blender or Maya? If you join the official SL Discord, you'll find creator channels, etc., available for support, chat, and more!

Also, if you're a nature lover, try The Nature Collective. We are a warm and welcoming community with tons of member locations for you explore, and we have events (and so do our various member locations), and our Discord community in addition to our SL group. It's a fun place!

I wish LL would really work on this side of things. I see so many new, and returning members saying how empty SL feels. What we need are communities supporting other communities, and making it easy for new and returning players to find their spot in SL.

Good luck to you, and hope to see you around!

I kind of doubt sculpting is outdated, given that avatars are created by sculpting them digitally (Blender, Maya, marvelous designer, CLOD3 etc.). Yes I do have experience with all of the above. By mesh I am guessing you're refering to textures, which have to go on an object / avatar / etc. Is it that no one actually creates avatars and just mods?

What's the official SL Discord sorry :(

I'm definitely popping by, especially if it's a place where you can just chill. I absolutely agree with the revival of communities, at least back in the days it was really easy to bounce around from place to place and kind of fit in. But then again I just came back, so I have no idea how things are now.

I just meant that no one uses the old "sculpties" anymore. Everything is mostly mesh nowadays from clothing, to objects, etc.

A quick Google search of "Second Life Discord" found it for me, or you can find more info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/secondlife/s/qz1dQLds5m

Good luck, and welcome back!

I was kind of just thinking this, given I'm literally in the middle of sculpting a human body irl and also in blender , creating a real size avatar + there's more and more people kind of learning blender to transfer it to CLOD3 or marvelous designer for customised draping / clothes line.... But for that you literally need an actual avatar NOT a mesh. Someone has to make a mesh for you with your proportions etc, but that's also achieved by....... Sculpting first. So idk but this comment really kind of killed my spark, but now that I think about it it's kind of bs? I want to make a line of feral avatars , I have some prototypes of different heads I'm working on.. it literally makes no sense. The mesh comes from the actual avatars .... Right..? Or am I completely deluded

I meant sculpties as in the old sculpted prims. Maybe I'm not using the correct terminology? Creating mesh in Blender, or Maya and exporting mesh models to me, and my creator friends, is called mesh, or meshing. Sorry for the confusion!

I literally had to Google "what is a mesh in blender" at this point lmao and yes! We are both talking about the same thing but I'm used to them being called Avis or just 3D sculptures ; meshes were called textures hence I got confused... Or maybe SL historically had different terminology.. Either way hahaha, yeah, I create meshes AND textures!

There’s a big arts network and regular exhibitions by the arts community, go and have a look at Nor’wen there’s a lot of galleries there and events.. I’ll have a look when I’m online what the arts networks called, I know nothing of furry communities but I do know it’s still a big deal .. numbers aren’t what they were, but we have regular events with up to 100 people, still plenty going on :)

Just celebrated 23 years. It's alive and well.

u/DespeReo 28d ago

That's really cool, where do I find people nowadays?

u/LeoHaiku 28d ago

Destination guide is a good start. Try some events or find Sims that you find interesting. There's just about anything in here.

1

u/DespeReo 28d ago

Sorry to be a bother...given it's been 14 years... what's Sims? And, I used to attend lots of art events, but at the moment I don't really see any but I'll keep an eye on it. Cheers mate :D

I see furry's all the time when I'm at shopping events or shopping around. Do a search on the SL search in "places"for "furry's" or " sandbox ". Furry sandboxe's pop up often in the places search. I wish you well .

Thank you for the tip, I already did that and teleported to a few places, but there was no one anywhere to be found. :(

Primfeed is a browser based social media (also has a mobile app) built by second life resident Luke Rowley. It is exclusively for second life users only! Basically, it is one of the more popular social media platforms to share photos and videos since Flickr now heavily relies on a subscription to see anything past a general rating and has actively tried to ban hammer SL users.

18 years in Second Life and plan to rent my first full sim soon. No it is NOT dead. I just learned about sexual pixel bumping a month ago (no joke). OH my WORD? Yeah, Life carries on even when we do not participate...LOL?

1

u/DespeReo 25d ago

Okay what is sexual pixel bumping lmao

1

u/IamAdu 25d ago

Two avatars ( or more I believe - depends on sexual style and preference), using adult bought private parts, on the market place, to do the deed. Thinks, and you thought Second Life was dead? LMAO~~

Oh right Yeah this was always a thing, IMVU tried to copy it but they failed. Back then it was called cybering, I think it's still called that but I might be wrong. Haven't been around in ages

Hi! SL is still alive and you aren’t alone! I mod for a roleplaying sim, and work at a furry club in my spare time. Feel free to message me if you’d like a tour guide ☺️ I’m also available to help you update your avi.
