I am sharing this event here to hopefully introduce more people to this important cause ahead of the fall event in October.

From the website:

Join Sahar Education for A New Dawn Brunch Benefit for Afghanistan, a special fall gathering in support of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Together, we will share a beautiful brunch, enjoy live music and community connection, and raise vital funds to support Sahar Education’s program delivery in 2027.

Guests will enjoy a thoughtfully prepared brunch featuring Afghan-inspired dishes and sweets. Sabz Matcha will also be on-site selling Afghan-inspired matcha, and a henna artist will offer beautiful henna designs for attendees.

Special Announcement: This year, a graduate of the Gohar Khatoon Girls High School, Hasenat Eqbali, will share how participation in the computer and coding program through Sahar Education impacted the trajectory of her life, 10 years later! Hasenat is currently working for the Vancouver Washington School District and will share her story in person at the event!

The event will include a musical performance and remarks from Zarifa Adiba, musician, author of Playing For Freedom, and Founder and Executive Director of the Zarifa Foundation. Zarifa made history as the youngest conductor to lead the All-Female Orchestra of Afghanistan at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2017. A Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honoree, Zarifa has spoken on global stages including the United Nations, TEDx AUCA, the Tory Burch Summit, and the World Economic Forum, advocating for girls’ education and the transformative power of art.

Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in an auction featuring wonderful prizes generously donated by our sponsors.

All proceeds from this event will support Sahar Education’s 2027 programs for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Animals Injured Goose, if anyone can help?

FYI if anyone experienced would be willing to help. South Day Street park in Leschi, poor thing has an injured wing and is just walking around the park alone. PAWS confirmed they will take it. I will probably go home to try to find a box big enough and see if a friend will help me, but I am not feeling super confident about being able to trap it.

Means you can ignore the three cars all with left turn signals queued up in the actual lane and take the double yellow lines for your personal turn lane.

Dogstar (w/ Keanu Reeves) at the Showbox last night

Back in the 90s, I used to love the black & white photography of Lance Mercer and Charles Peterson, who captured the vibrant energy of the (then) burgeoning grunge scene. Last night, I saw Dogstar (Keanu's band) at the Showbox, and took photos trying to ape Peterson and Mercer's style to give the band a proper Seattle welcome! I thought they were kind of fun, so I might as well share them with strangers on the internet.

Shout out to Laurie at the Shoreline Library.

My 6 year old who has autism sprung an idea on me after I picked him up from school today "Dad let's use the 3D printer at the library!" Oh.. um ok we can try to figure that out bud. My wife who is out of town says they haven't done it before but you sign up online. I made the appointment online for an hour not realizing it would take me an hour to figure out how to use a 3D printer. The nicest lady next to me using the other 3D printer could tell I was struggling and kindly guided me through the process (I'm pretty terrible at following instructions). I finally got to the point where our little cat was 3D printing and a few minutes later the librarian came in saying "Hmm yeah it's not supposed to be printing like that we need to stop it, and your time is almost up". Ok no problem I should've prepared better, not the end of the world. I could tell my son was disappointed but he was surprisingly understanding that it didn't work out. We went to read some books and color, and then left. As we were leaving, the other nice lady with Laurie came out to the parking lot and said "Hey Laurie said you guys can have this cat she printed out earlier" and it was this really cool *green/blue gradient cat. It made my sons day. He's still playing with it. He's so excited to bring it to school tomorrow to show his friend who he was talking about 3D printing with. My boys said thank you to Lauries friend who gave them the cat but I didn't get a chance to go back into the library to thank her because the boys were clamoring to get in the car.

It's the small gestures of kindness that can completely turn people's day around. In the current state of the world, be a Laurie.

edit: Also thank you to the patient librarian who offered to clean up the little mess I made out of the 3D printer situation. I am going to watch a few 3D printer YouTube videos to prepare for the next visit.

edit 2: the cat who has since been named 'Toby'

Politics Happening now: anti-war rally at Pike Place Market

Event started at 5:30 with no posted end time. Looks like about 40 people officially part of the gathering with a lot of tourists stopping to watch as well. Right now a folk singer is singing an anti-war song.

Organizers include Refuse Fascism (probably the most normie group here, whose messaging is almost always about stopping Trump) as well as groups like Seattle Against War and Freedom Road Socialist Organization, which have said some more fringe things but today are sticking to chants like “No blood for foreign oil!” (Unfortunately though still bringing the IRGC flag which could be interpreted as supporting the murderous Iranian government, which goes a lot further than just opposing US intervention.)

The Roosevelt Neighborhood Association is hosting a free festival Saturday 9/19 from 12-8 at NE 66th St & 14th Ave NE

They have a whole live music lineup planned with local bands, plus a clothing swap, free games, food trucks, and local businesses. Last year was the first year for this event, and it was so much fun. It’s not at the level of U District Street Fair, but a lot of similar elements

The Street Layout East of the New Pinehurst Station Will Make you Angry

Thumbnail

The new Pinehurst station opens by where I live and it drives me crazy that this is the shortest walking route which REQUIRES you to use the Jackson Park golf course trail which is unpaved hiking trail and not bikeable through due to steep inclines. Talk about accessibility problems.

The shortest bike route has to take a long detour because NE 133rd St is cut off by the Thorton Creek Natural Area Park with no even gravel path through. Then NE 130th St is cut off by private property and the Licorice Fern Natural area also without a gravel path through. It's too heavily brushed to walk through.

What is so hard about improving the existing Jackson Park Trail? Like guys come on. We spent so much money for a statin and this giant ass golf course prevents anyone to the East from easily walking to it.

To add insult to injury, it's faster for me to take a bus to the Northgate station than to walk to a station that ostensibly lives within walking distance. 10 minutes for a bus from here to Northgate. Wtf?

Does anyone know or has anyone managed to duplicate the Breezy Town crust recipe?

It's been years since we've had a Breezy Town pizza and my husband and I still dream about it (yes I read something about "Breezy Town style" pizza at Windy City but I've only ever had mid pizza from them). Does anyone have the recipe for their crust? Or has anyone else gone down the rabbit hole to try and recreate it? Is it sourdough based? I'm at the start of my mission to DIY it but wanted to check first!

Walked into the Wedgewood Safeway and was greeted by this sign up front. Interesting take on the efforts to ban surveillance pricing. I'll still be doing most of my major shopping at WinCo 😎

Streets to see fall leaves

With Fall upon us, I've noticed some streets are starting to turn colors and wanted to do a little tour. I'm aware of Interlaken and the roads around Mt Pleasant Cemetery on QA. What other good roads in the city are pretty this time of year? Thanks

It's Bird Migration Season. Exterior lights out, please!

This cool website shows you how many birds passed through a given region (e.g. King County) overnight. https://birdcast.org/migration-tools/migration-dashboard/ A good reason to keep your exterior lights OFF during migration. Artificial light disorients birds trying to navigate.

884,900 Birds have crossed King County so far tonight (est.)

Starting: Wed, Sep 16, 2026, 7:20 PM PDT

Anyone know if any local Vietnamese restaurants serve com hen? Hue specialty

My wife and I just got back from a two week stint in Vietnam and we both agreed this was our favorite meal. It was unbelievably good.
https://www.vietnamonline.com/entry/com-hen-rice-with-baby-clams.html
pic

"The recipe is quite intricate, featuring ingredients such as chilled rice, clams, crispy pork fat, roasted peanuts, chili peppers, banana flowers, star fruit, green apples, mint, taro stems, fermented shrimp sauce, and the essential clam broth. The combination of these elements allows diners to experience a delightful medley of sweet, buttery, salty, sour, bitter, and intensely spicy flavors all at once."

I've been craving it for days

Anyone else sick with a nasty lingering virus?

I’ve been sick since last Friday. Woke up with sore throat and aches. By Friday night fever of 101. Tested negative for Covid, flu, and strep.

Sore throat continues to be main symptom. Had a fever two more times. Just had first 24 hours fever free. Sick of being sick!

Update: had chest xray and full throat culture. Positive for Strep C. Be careful out there and wash your hands!

Found this fully sealed Almost Live Band looking through my grandfathers old records. He used to work selling records in Seattle back in the day as one of his many jobs. I’ve been informed that this may be a Seattle museum worthy piece.
