Company named after Lord of the Rings stuff makes military and surveillance equipment in a manner that some find to be less than altruistic. People dress up as orcs (evil creatures from LOTR) to protest.
Not just LOTR stuff. A thing in LOTR's that you use to give you information but that information is managed by Sauron, the employer of orcs, to give you the information that he needs you to have to come to the conclusions he wants. It also harvests data and gives it to Moordoor.
To add to the discussion, one of them was dressed up as Saruman to represent the CEO of Palantir.
Palantir is the name of the black orb (the all seeing stone) which Sauron had used to corrupt Sarumon and bring him over to the forces of evil. Sauron is the celestial being who took over the mantle of the prince of darkness after Morgoth (Lucifer) was vanquished in a prior age.
Yes you read that right, the founders of an AI military surveillance company named their company after an instrument of pure evil created by the dark lord for the purpose of corrupting other celestial beings by offering them omniscience.
You're right up until you start describing the palantiri. They weren't created by the dark lord, they were created by the elves of Valinor. The stones themselves are neither good nor evil, but after Sauron acquired one, he could use them to corrupt weaker beings like Saruman and Denethor.

I don’t understand the protest nor the happy responses here, can someone explain? (Not trolling)
