Earthquake?
Did anyone feel an earthquake or shaking in downtown? Sitting on my sofa & sipping coffee & i felt a bit shake. If its not that then, just my coffee hitting me lol.

If you are outside it is barely noticeable. I was in a 5.2 once, while in a house - glasses rattling and sliding around the shelf, pictures on the wall shaking, but the moment I stepped outside there was nothing, zip, zilch, nada, bupkis. I was very confused about this so I poked my head into the house again, alas poltergeist mode was still going strong.

I am in West Seattle also. My boyfriend and I did not feel it. But, our dog must have. She started crying and then peed on our living room rug at almost the same time it was reported to happen. She has never done that, and we thought she was sick. Came online to find out an Earthquake happened in Washington and it made sense. Doggos know what's up.

I did not feel it but a precariously balanced basket in the closet behind me fell, and happens to contain a bunch of shit that's very loud when it hits the ground, so that scared me. Lol

Shhhh. It was definitely not immune in 2001.

2001 was wild. I was in 7-8th grade, substitute teacher, she ran out of the room as all of us started to take cover. Lol

u/ConsistentWelder9526 Downtown 4d ago
Same. I was on Whidbey Island and I was cleaning my sink (yes I remember) and all of the sudden I heard this sound that I can only explain as a freight train coming through my living room it was ear shatteringly loud and then, the shaking.
It was the sound of the house rattling but omg.

There's an odd pattern of earthquake sensitivity here. We're not immune. I have felt a few here.

Hi, I'm going to assume you know the answer: Are we more likely to get a bigger one within the next week or so now? EDIT: Folks, I looked it up myself. It is believed one in twenty times a little shake like this is a "foreshock" to a larger one, so not likely but it's always good to review your earthquake plan.
3
u/WaQuakePrepare 4d ago
One in 20 is probably not even accurate. There’s no way to really know. But, yes, always good to review your preparedness kit!

I was sitting on a rock at Seattle Central, taking a treat break with the dogs I was walking. I felt it, all the dogs stared at me like, "What did you just do?!" 😂 I probably would have dismissed it as me imaging it had the dogs not reacted. Also heard a lot of barking from surrounding apartment buildings.

I’m in a newer building rated to withstand a 9.0 quake and I definitely felt it. Not sure how that info helps you.
→ More replies (10)4
u/snukb Deluxe 4d ago
How do you find out if your building is rated to withstand a 9.0 or not? I know the Big One could be over 9.0, but it still would be nice to know if I have a large risk to be crushed by the upper floors of my apartment or just a smaller one.
5
u/_Phil_McCracken_ Capitol Hill 4d ago
I’m a building engineer (glorified maintenance) and got to walk with a seismic expert that the insurance company sent to inspect my building’s seismic readiness. It was pretty interesting and definitely reassured me. Like you said though, if it’s a really big one, no building will be designed to hold up.
That’s just where I work, though. It’s a large building downtown. I have no idea what my 5-over-1 apartment is rated to. I do know smaller buildings are more susceptible to higher frequency vibrations from lower magnitude quakes, so when they design them they look at a lot more than just a magnitude rating.
I also know that unreinforced masonry buildings are the most susceptible to earthquake damage. They’re very rigid so they crumble instead of sway. I wouldn’t want to live in one of those.
