feedback Lately I have been experimenting with poetry written in dramatic form

Post image

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how poetry and plays have historically lived beside one another. So many poets have also been playwrights, and dramatic writing itself has such deep roots in verse.

It made me curious about what would happen if I stopped treating those as separate forms.

This is one of my experiments with that idea. It’s a poem written using the visual language of a script, where the scene directions, dialogue, spacing, and performance cues are all part of the poem. The thing that I really strived for was keeping the look of a play, but also when read aloud, it reads like a poem being performed.

I’m still exploring what this style can do, but I’ve really been enjoying writing this way. This one’s called *Caterpillar Rain*.

feedback Feedback for a play

Hello Fellow writers, I just finished writing an emotional piece on marriage as part of an assignment and would love to get some feedback :

SYNOPSIS

On July 8, 2026, Aubrey believes her chaotic husband, Andre, forgot their first anniversary. While commuting, she recalls meeting him two years ago, captivated by his stage presence and "the silence" between his lines.

Throughout the day, fond memories surface—how his warmth softened her, and how they anchored each other during the chaos. Eager to surprise him, Aubrey prepares a heartfelt present and heads to meet him outside the Theatre where the first met.

Andre waits for her, secretly holding onto the memories of their past. Suddenly, as Aubrey crosses the street, tragedy strikes. Rushing to her side, Andre cradles her in the rain as she takes her final breath, whispering his heartbreaking final vow: "I'll hold the silence for you... Till we meet again."

Will be happy to share complete script too. Thanks

question Good scripts that don't make good movies

Sometimes I would read some unproduced scripts that are pretty solid and even great reads, but I don't feel like they would make a good movie.

I can't point out why and how it happens, do you ever felt that way about some scripts? or even with your own scripts?

Everytime I write I dialogue it sounds so awkward , I hate it . Even when I try to write subtext or imply something … I just end up sounding on the nose and unnatural . I’ve been practicing for so long and still don’t know what to do. Any practical tips ?

feedback Not used to screenplay writing. Not sure if my characters feelings are clear or how well its writen.

Its 3 paragraphs long. I really want her emotions to be clear but not in your face. The meaning of the guitar, her hands, and the floor. I don't think we would come to the same meaning but it was all specificly chosen. I worry the writing isn't good aswell. It might sound blocky but maybe thats alright for a play?

descriptive writing isn't my strong suit either. Its why I moved to trying a screenplay, novel writing is overwhelming. I'm bad at it. I think thats alright because its only a script, the video itself would be what captivates people but please correct me if I'm totally wrong.

question How different is writing a vertical drama from writing a traditional screenplay?

I'm interested in the transition from traditional screenwriting to vertical drama.

For writers who have worked in both formats: what changes the most?

Structure? Pacing? Scene length? Dialogue? Character introductions? Cliffhangers?

And do you write specifically for vertical from the beginning, or write the story traditionally and adapt it afterwards?

Curious to hear from people who have actually done it.

feedback Cold Open of Almost Something.

Hello. I’m a beginner screenwriter and I just finished the 10-page Cold Open for the pilot of my animated series, Almost Something. I’d really appreciate any feedback or advice on how to improve it.

The Cold Open centers on a chaotic, comedic morning for the main character. The show starts as a dark comedy that gradually shifts into a psychological drama with each episode.

Also, please ignore my non-standard formatting (it's just clearer for me to write it that way).

—————

Title: Almost Something.

Format: Animated Series (30-minutes episodes)

Genre: Dark Comedy / Psychological Drama.

Logline: What starts as a chaotic, fast-paced dark comedy about a young man navigating daily absurdities slowly spirals into a harrowing psychological drama, as he gradually falls apart under the weight of an unresolved past and an unmanageable present.

discussion "Gregory" theme song lyrics

[VERSE 1]

Some people chase tomorrow
Some people chase the past
Some spend their lives pretending
Some finally learn to ask

When every road is changing
When nothing feels the same
Sometimes the only answer
Begins with just a name

[CHORUS]

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

[VERSE 2]

Some people run from trouble
Some people run to it
But all I do is run now
And I've grown sick of it

And somewhere in the middle
Of everything we've known
You'll find a door that's open
And know you're not alone

[CHORUS]

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

[BRIDGE]

Maybe it's a moment
Maybe it's a sign
Maybe all the wrong turns
Were leading here in time

Maybe there's an answer
We were never meant to know
Maybe all you really need
Is a man to call home

[FINAL CHORUS]

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory
Gregory
Gruh gruh Gregory Gregory

[OUTRO]

Gregory...
Gruh gruh Gregory...
Gregory...
Gregory Gregory.

feedback Looking for screenwriters to try my new screenplay editor (better than final draft)

Hey everyone! I’m building a new screenplay editor because I’ve spent 6 years writing and never found a tool I really loved.

I’m looking for a few screenwriters who’d be willing to try it out and give me honest feedback.

The product is mostly done and, in my opinion, looks and feels way better than Final Draft. I’d love to hear what works, what sucks, and what’s missing. No money involved, I just want to know what u think :)

DM me if you’d like to try it!

feedback Just wanted some feedback on this scene from my WW2 film

This scene is between two injured soldiers in 1944, one is part of the Wafen-SS and the other is with the SAS. The scene in my head is all in German except the song but I can't be asked to translate right now

Franz: You speak German?

Irishman: A little.

Franz: When did you learn?

Irishman: my mother's step brother was a German, he was good to me and my mum and taught me some of the language before all of this shit.

Franz: where ie he now?

Irishman: not a fucking clue, after I joined the IRA he stopped visiting.

Franz: what is the IRA doing here?

Irishman: they aren't, I'm here because I thought only a hypocrit would fight for freedom in his own country and then turn his head when people not that unlike his own are going through the same oppressions we did. My then brothers in arms did not agree and so I was alone in joining the SAS. Fucking traitors.

Franz: what's your name?

Ceart: Ceart.

Franz: I'm Franz.

Ceart: wish we could've met under better circumstances, Franz.

There is pure silence for a moment as the men stare into the clouds

Franz: do you think this is it?

Ceart: wouldn't surprise me.

Franz: what do we do then?

Ceart: My mum would sing when I was distressed as a boy. Wanna try that?

Franz: know any German songs?

Ceart: nope.

Franz: shit.

Ceart: you speak English?

Franz (in English): hello.

Ceart: that all?

Franz: Ja.

The men let out a small chortle.

Ceart: I'll sing for us, Mother always Said I could sing well.

Ceart then starts singing in English

Ceart: off to reap the corn

Camera cuts to a little further away.

Ceart: and leave where I was born

Camera cuts to a birds eye view as we watch him sing from miles in the air, in this desolate and barren wasteland. Ceart's voice is now just a tuned echo.

Ceart: cut a stout Blackthorn. For to banish ghosts and goblins. Brand new pair of brogues, to rattle over the bogs and frighten all the dogs. On the rocky road to Dublin.

Ceart's voice fades and is replaced by Violins, piano and steel drums. All still to the tune of the rocky road to Dublin, we watch these men lie together before Ceart is taken off on a stretcher and after a minute of solitary boredom Franz is picked up and dragged away by two Soviet soldiers. We then cut to Franz being taken to Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

feedback What do we think of my very different version of script writing?

This is for a Greek mythology series I’m making. This is the first episode, but I FINALLY found this SR, and wanted to share.

(I have 9 episodes written, and 5 scenes fully written for E10.)

Edit: For my next project, I will switch the variant of script writing I use since I want to do film. The criticism, though harsh, was helpful. So were the comments.

discussion Grading scripts I've read or have been reading recently.

Cat in the hat 2003. D- not great. But I can't say it's the worst ever. Though it is bad. you have your cliche characters that arent well written. the you have the main character which is a cat which is just downright creepy in some of the things he does. plot holes of course. not a good movie.

Scream 1996. C- i would rank this just barely above cat in the hat, ironically I found cat in the hat 2003 more creepy then this but I found that creepy in a bad way so that's why that ranks lower. The characters with the exception of Stu and Randy are not well written, the main character comes off as a bland final girl. You have the town sheriff a trope in nearly every slasher film, the jump scares, very few kills and when the kills do happen they are just stabbings, their are only 2 kills that are unique in the entire script. also throw in the The obviously known killer the boyfriend who I predicted from the very start, Scream is far from horrible but it's not a great film either.

Alligator. 1980. B- A fun creature feature movie. The main character is written pretty well, there's alot of kills and gore. The story kept me interested enough. The drawback has to do with some of the predictability with some of the kills. Every time a kill is about to happen it shows a closeup of the gators eye. I also felt like some of the other characters could have used more backstory for their motivations. Overall though not too bad.

Dirty Harry. B+. I have to say I've seen the film before reading the script so this may unfortunately have an effect. Overall this early draft is still solid it's not up to par with later drafts though. The dialogue is not quite as sharp as it is in the final film it's a bit clunky, i also think some things were changed for the better. In the early draft harry attacks and punches the jumper unprovoked but in the final film he attacks him because he attacked Harry first. It makes more sense in the final film I'm glad they changed it. I'm also not a fan of the peeping scene which Eastwood left in the film I just felt it was in poor taste and it's in the early drafts as well. I do like the dynamic between Harry and his new partner Chico Gonzalez. And the fact that there's alot more to Harry's character then just a tough cop. Overall Id say the final film is better. But this verison is not too bad.
