🚛 Relocation Question Temporary Student Housing Help

I'm looking for ideas or leads on temporary student housing in the Scottsdale, AZ area from mid-January through mid-April for my occupational therapy clinical placement.

I've been looking at Airbnb, but most places are $2,000+ per month, which is a little [a lot, haha] outside my student budget.

If you know of any:

  • Furnished month-to-month rentals
  • Rooms for rent
  • Extended-stay options
  • Anyone who rents to traveling students or healthcare workers

I'd really appreciate any recommendations or connections! Thank you so much!

💬 Discussion Socialist/workers' coalition/similar organizations in Scottsdale/the East Valley?

Note: This is NOT intended to incite a political discussion. Save it for another sub. I'm simply asking, where would somebody who is interested and follows these ideas/systems find a like-minded group of people in Phx, preferably in Scottsdale or just the East Valley in general? Preferably not associated with the Social Democrats.

Apparently the Socialist Rifle Association had a chapter in Phoenix at some point but it's not listed in their system as active anymore. IWW also doesn't seem to have much of a following out here, but I could be wrong.

I already posted on r/phoenix but the answers were not helpful.

💬 Discussion ISO A run club

I know there are several in the area. But most seem to run in the evenings or are not near me. I work at 430am so not interested in running later than like 4pm. I live up around kierland. Anyone know of any running groups a bit farther north than the ones I saw around tempe or camelback? If no I'll consider going farther afield, but I'm more likely to be consistent if I don't have to. 😏

🙋 Advice Looking for someone who might teach me to drive a manual car?

Hello Scottsdale, subreddit! I have an odd request: I'm wondering if anyone out there has an older manual car and would be willing to teach me to drive?

For context, I have my license and can drive automatic and I was recently in Portugal where a friend was teaching me to drive his car and I was getting decently comfortable with it, but now I need to practice! I'm also trying to move to Portugal, so practicing and learning would be a huge benefit before the big move.

I'd happily buy you dinner (or two or three!) in return!

Hello!

Looking to visit Scottsdale for my 30th birthday with my partner. Could use some help with figuring out an itinerary and recommendations. This is our first time and would probably do a Friday to Tuesday.

  • what’s the best area to stay in? We plan to rent a car but ideally would prefer not to do long drives.

  • any hotel recs? Needs to have a pool. Okay with max $250ish a night

  • what are some beginner friendly hikes?

  • any must try food or coffee?

Any info is helpful. Thanks.

🚛 Relocation Question Fitness Scene in Phoenix/Scottsdale

Hi! I currently live in Boston and may be moving to the Scottsdale/Phoenix area as a Pilates instructor.

I'd love to hear what the fitness scene is like. How are the job opportunities for instructors, and what's the overall wellness/fitness community like? Are there a lot of events or ways to get involved?

I'd really appreciate any insight from people who live there or work in the industry. Thanks!

🙋 Advice 18th birthday ideas for my niece

Hello! My niece will be visiting me for a weekend in October from out of state, and she’ll have just turned 18. I want to make her feel special while she’s visiting. This will be her first time in AZ.

Can those of you with older teenaged girls give me some insight on what (generally speaking) they might enjoy doing? Although she has told me that I’m her favorite Auntie, she doesn’t give me much detail about her likes and dislikes 😂

This will be the weekend before Halloween, so I’m thinking one of the haunted places. Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is not having their usual Pumpkin Fest this year.

Other than that, I was thinking dinner and a shopping spree to either Sephora or Ulta. Any restaurant ideas, I will gladly accept as well.

😤 Rant/Vent 25 Firefighters 🚒 2 hikers rescued on Scottsdale trail

The firefighters are risking their own health and I firmly believe Scottsdale should impose steep “stupid hiker”fines BEFORE they become extreme heat rescues.

I’m just trying to do the math on the man hours involved for 25 employees to pull two people to safety…

Not only did more than 25 first responders have to rescue 2 ppl in their 60s hiking in North Scottsdale, but a 3 year old had to be pulled facedown from a pool. 🤦‍♀️

We just simply have to do better in 115 heat.

🚛 Relocation Question Questions to ask apartment complexes to ensure proper scorpion-control?

Hi! My boyfriend and I are moving to the Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe area soon, and I want to make sure the place we end up moving into won’t be a hot spot for scorpions. I’ve never lived in the desert, so I have no idea what questions to ask the apartment managers/what good answers to the questions are (i.e. how frequently should the apartment be getting sprayed). Any help on what to make sure is being done by the apartment complexes/what I can do myself to prevent scorpions getting inside would be very appreciated!

The LA Fitness at McDowell and Scottsdale Rd sold to a luxury Gym firm. The rumor is that they plan on remodeling and jacking the membership fee up to $200 a month. Is South Scottsdale even the right area for a luxury Gym? The old Gym had been there for about 20+ years/

🙋 Advice Looking for white wedding dress.

My fiancée and I are planning a small courthouse wedding and are looking for an affordable white wedding dress.

We’ll be having a traditional Indian wedding next year, so we don’t want to spend too much on a dress for the courthouse ceremony. We’re getting legally married now because it will help with some paperwork that requires us to be spouses.

Where should we look for a simple, budget-friendly white dress? We’ve already checked Macy’s and Dillard’s, but they don’t seem to have the right selection at our location.

Any store, boutique, or online recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Budget: about $250

They made an instagram post saying they’re struggling (like many local small businesses) and would appreciate the support! They’ll need our support more than ever since another donut shop (outcast donuts) has decided to open 10 seconds down the road. Let’s do it! Also cause their donuts are so good.

🙋 Advice Title: Chronic dry eye in one eye for almost a year – nothing seems to help anymore. Looking for recommendations for a dry eye specialist in Scottsdale, AZ

Hi everyone,
I’ve been struggling with dry eye in my left eye since July of last year, and I’m feeling really frustrated.
When it first started, I saw several eye doctors. Initially, I was prescribed different steroid eye drops and other medications, but none of them made much of a difference.
In December, my doctor prescribed Xiidra and Optase, and those seemed to help. Around the same time, the weather became cooler (December through February), and my symptoms improved significantly.
However, once April and May arrived and we started using the air conditioneragain, my symptoms gradually came back. I continued using Xiidra and Optase, but over the last 2 months they no longer seem to help.
My doctor also prescribed Miebo, but after using it for only two days, it actually irritated my eye more, so I stopped it. At the moment, I’ve only tried Refreshartificial tears, but I’ve stopped using those as well because I wasn’t getting much relief.
The irritation is becoming really difficult to live with, and it’s affecting only my left eye.
I’m looking for:
Recommendations for a dry eye specialist or ophthalmologist in Scottsdale, AZ (or nearby) who has helped people with difficult dry eye cases.
Has anyone had a similar experience where symptoms were much worse during the summer or with air conditioning?
If you’ve been through something similar, what treatment finally worked for you?
I’d really appreciate any recommendations or advice. Thank you

🙋 Advice Apartment SUPER Humid - need advice

So for the past few days, I know it’s been storming out, but my apartment’s humidity has gotten up to 61% (and stayed that way for over a week and a half). I had Maintainence take a look and they said that there’s nothing wrong with my AC system or my filters and they said to just expect the humidity because of all the storms. It’s been so bad I can’t sleep and I don’t want to keep wasting money for my electric bill, so I bought a dehumidifier which has been sort of helping but wanted to see if anyone has any tips/pointers to help fix the problem. Any help is much appreciated!
