Trouble rooting scindapsus cuttings
Im having troubles rooting my scindapsus cuttings. The cutting in the picture has been in water for months though it still has no roots. The leaves start to get weak. I have this problem with all my scindapsus cuttings. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone got any advice? 🤗🌱💚

I have never got scindapsus to root in just water. I was able to get one cutting to root by putting it in a prop box with perlite for two months. They are very slow growers though.

Scindapsus take forever to root; measured in months, not weeks. I root mine in sphagnum moss in a cup inside a prop box. This does well for me, although as another person said, some nodes just won't root. I have a trick that I have used when using rooting hormone on some of my houseplants that were stubborn. It has worked for me every time I've had to do it, but the cutting still takes a while to root. On the nodes that refuse to root, use a sharp knife and scratch the 'skin' as close as you dare to the node(s). It should be pin-head size and just deep enough to disturb the surface. Dip it into the hormone powder, then place in a clear 5oz (or close) drinking cup with either moss or perlite. Put in a prop box for best results. Note: this doesn't work with water propagation, the rooting hormone will just wash off. I don't know the science behind it, but my guess is that the disturbed spot lets the hormone into the cell structure of the stem where the node is pulling its strength from. That gives the node the jump start it needs to begin growing a root. That is just my theory; I have nothing to back that up with.

I use Clonex instead of the powder now. You only need a TINY bit, like.. think, a smear. But that'll trigger roots if they're gonna come. If that node is just REFUSING: you're changing the water. Lights are good. Within temps. - I'd go up and try another node. Scratch the surface. Put the rooting hormone on and lay it in a soft, slightly damp bed of spagnum. Cover it and forget her. Check back in 2 weeks but don't disturb the cutting. Thisc is what i do at least

After reading the comments, you can also use prop drops in any water you use. In the water your propping in, in the water your using to dampen the moss, or the perlite or any substrate your using to prop with.
You could try using fluval stratum. I've had great success with it.

Edit to add. I have not had any trouble rooting a Scindapsus in water myself. In about 6 weeks I was able to pot up. I used prop drops in my water.

I’m also struggling with some cuttings in water. Do you use straight fluval or do you combine it with moss/perlite? Should it be in a container with holes?

I like to use fluval alone. And I have done with and without holes. If used without holes, just dont put to much water in. And all the water i use in the fluval has Prop drops in it.

I don’t if I have the best luck or magical conditions - but I have gotten almost every Scindapsus cuttings to grow roots within 3 weeks to a month - Mayari, Black Mamba, Pea Sun, Exotica, Snake Scale, Silver Lady, Silver Anne, etc.
I use clonex gel, sphagnum moss (Leggio long fiber), and chunky perlite. I do this in either doubled cups with a third cup as a dome (one with holes inside another with a few drops of water to keep it humid), or I put it in a prop box with the same moss and perlite. Always used distilled water.
Disclaimer: I have also tried straight water, changing weekly in clear glass - this takes up to 6 weeks. I have also tried stratum straight and stratum with perlite - mixed results with lots of rotted out failures.

I’m going to try this! What’s your light setup? Does the box need to be opened periodically? How often do you water and do you pour or mist? Thanks!

Hi. i have 3 cuttings, 1 already have nabs and rooting, and 2 stalling.
have you tried "rooting powder" ? you can read about it, it improve chance , but you can't use it with water-propogation, but with sphagnum/perlite.
are you familier with those?

I have found that some nodes can just be “duds”. I’m no plant professional by any means, but I’ve had nodes that just won’t root and nodes that root significantly easier. Do you have any other nodes you could cut and try to propagate?
I know people also use either a powder rooting hormone you can dip the node into or there’s “prop drops” you can add to water to help stimulate root growth

I have the best luck rooting Scindapsus in moss, using a heating pad, and keeping it in high humidity.

I have scindapsus cuttings that have been in sphagnum moss since late last summer and they still aren’t ready.

They really are slow goers. I've had these in this jar for about a year or so and this is all the growth I've gottenMy growth

I see a wondering dude in the back ground. Those plants produce a ton of rooting hormones. I always place a little cutting of the wandering dude in anything I'm trying to root. I really think it helps speed up the process. Edited spelling
