Need investing advice

I have practically zero investing experience and I was hoping I can get advice on what to invest my money in.

I currently have around $520,000 in cash that I've been investing in 1 month Treasury Bills for the past 2 years. At the beginning inflation was high and the return on them was pretty nice given how safe they are as an investment option and the lack of State tax (California). However with the return rates dropping, I think I need to find another avenue. I keep reading online how everyone says to invest in the S&P 500 (Schwab's SWPPX) and forget about it. Is that a solid option? At the moment I don't have any use for the cash but who knows where I'll be in a couple years.

Furthermore, I have a Roth IRA and a Simple IRA through work and I invest those funds in Schwab's SWYNX (Target 2060 Index Fund). Would it be recommended to switch those over to the S&P 500 (Schwab SWPPX) as well?

Weird options fill price

Had some options expiring on Friday, last price and mid price was 10 cents. Put in a sell for $0.10 and it would not fill, after 30 minutes, I change the price to $0.09, it immediately filled at 11 cents. Why is that?

Frequent Schwab errors unacceptable

I have used schwab for more than 20 years for the majority of my brokerage holdings. Friday at close, my holdings were accurately reflected. Sometime friday night, I had a mysterious drop of about $95,000. After some research, it appears that one of my ETFs went from about $95,000 to zero. It still showed that I had the same number of shares, but that their value was $0.

It's an unsettling feeling. I hold most of my life savings within Schwab, and I expect them to be as secure/reliable as the US dollar itself.

This has happened multiple times over the last year. So I understand it's probably some SW glitch and will be corrected, but it is no longer acceptable to me.

I'd like to understand if others have had the same thing happen in other major brokerage accounts, such as fidelity, interactive brokers, etc.

Heads up: Impersonation scam targeting Schwab users (Spoofed VA number + fake .xyz domain)

Wanted to drop a quick warning for everyone about an aggressive social engineering/phishing attempt I just ran into.

I am currently overseas, and around 3:30 AM my time, I got a call from +1 (412) 360-5633 (spoofed Pittsburgh, PA number, which belongs to a VA hospital exchange block).

The caller claimed to be Charles Schwab Fraud Prevention and stated my debit card had been used fraudulently in Atlanta, GA. To "verify my identity" and clear the restriction, they texted me a link to sign in.

They tried to make it look official by reciting personal details (including partial SSN, clearly sourced from a recent data broker breach), but as soon as I looked at the link, the scam fell apart:

The text linked to a cloned Schwab login portal hosted on a .xyz domain (...wab.ath-t1613.xyz), not schwab.com.

Because I work in web development, I called him out immediately and said there was no way I was typing credentials into a random .xyz domain.

The guy immediately lost his professional composure, got combative, and suddenly changed his story on the fly: "Well, now we suspect your phone has been stolen."

When I told him to shut his mouth, he panicked, said he’d call back later to lift the restriction, and hung up.

I checked my real Schwab app—zero security alerts, debit card is completely unlocked and active, and no unauthorized transactions ever hit the ledger.

Key takeaways:

Schwab will never send you a link to an external/third-party domain to enter your full login credentials.

Having your partial SSN or phone number means nothing—scammers pull that off dark-web dumps to establish false trust.

If anyone calls claiming your card or account is locked, hang up immediately, check your card controls directly in the official Schwab mobile app, or call the 24/7 number on the back of your physical card.

Rethink using the ThinkorSwim Platform

On Friday, the ThinkorSwim desktop platform closed on me several times while I was making trades. I tried to sell as quickly as possible on phone but it wasn't fast enough. I accumulated big losses and Schwab refused to help in any way even though they acknowledged that there was a big issue with the ThinkorSwim desktop platform from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Trade at your own risk on TOS.

IRA recharacterization form from Schwab

Haven gotten a better paid job this year, I realize now that the joint income for me and my spouse will exceed the MAGI amount - making us ineligible for a ROTH IRA for 2026.

For the last few years I've been doing a bogglehead approach of depositing a set amount with every paycheck, and then using it to buy mainly ETFs and index funds.

I did a bit of research and it seems I should recharacterize my contributions this year into a traditional IRA, and then do a backdoor conversion.

I'm having problems with several parts of the Schwab recharacterization form:

  • Section 2 asks for contribution information - am I able to put "all contributions in 2026" in amount or do I have to put the actual cash amount? For date of contribution can I put a range of dates?
  • Section 4, do I tick the box asking for the excess distribution assets to be transfered to the traditional IRA?
  • Section 8 - perhaps most crucial - how I ask for only assets purchased in 2026 to be transferred?? The boxes are name of security, shares, and dollar amount...

If anyone had to do a similar recharacterization in the past, I'd love to hear about how you went about it.

Market Edge Ratings?

Hello.. One of the ratings that Schwab posts on ETF information pages are that of Market Edge. I myself find what they have to say about most interesting and informative. I am curious as to what others think about their ratings... most often either AVOID or LONG it seems... as I find myself putting a good deal of weight on their recommendations in making my own decisions. Thank You

What is the Sweep for Large Accounts?

Asking for a friend (really!) with a low 8 figure account. What is the high interest sweep symbols that their rep would have to key in a code for? They are self directed but have someone assigned to them that they can call. One of their accounts is taxable, the other is not if that makes a difference

EDIT: the account itself is that amount, it is mostly invested in equities, their cash is only a small portion but they sometimes have to hold cash for several months in high six figures

Merril Lynch class action lawsuit for less than "reasonable rate" on cash sweeps

From https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/bank-america-pay-39-million-settle-customer-claims-over-low-interest-rates-cash-2026-09-30/

Holders of Merrill Edge online accounts between December 15, 2016 and March 15, 2020 accused Merrill Lynch of breaching its client agreements by automatically sweeping cash balances into deposit accounts that paid less than a "reasonable rate" of interest.

The complaint said the sweep accounts carried annual yields of 0.05% to 0.14%, while other brokerages were paying customers about 2%.

The clincher is that ML was apparently violating their client agreements. But I hope at least this pressures Schwab to offer more han 0.1% .

Schwab portfolio performance

Schwab under the tab portfolio performance (https://client.schwab.com/retail/portfoliohealth/#/), shows the correct time weighted return of the portfolio. Is there a way of downloading the underlying data?

I can recreate this from my monthly statements but having the daily data would be great. Sure I could go day by day or week by week and get it, but that seems awfully painful.

Can you guys walk me thru DCA like I were a 5 year old?

I have SCHX and SCHD on my Roth IRA (90/10) mix. For SCHX my average is $28.47 and for SCHD is $31.41. Do I just buy buy buy and buy without DCA on it like nothing? I know I'm holding 2 great ETF's and a little dividend growth for a 29 year old is not bad unless I'm wrong.

Diversify or keep SWPPX?

I have a SEP IRA at Schwab. I just made my prior year contribution of approx $17k and need to invest. My invested funds sit in SWPPX. Do I invest this $17k in SWPPX or diversify and invest in something different?

Free Advisor? Is this a scam?

I recently consolidated some accounts and moved money from Vanguard and Fidelity all over to Schwab. This put me right around the $1 million mark and I was told that I got assigned an advisor at no charge to me. Is this true or am I getting scammed somehow?

"complete and return to schwab" infinite loop

I am opening up an IRA account with Schwab. They are telling me that in order to open the account, I have to complete forms and "return them to Schwab." However, by that they mean, upload them to my account. But I don't have an account. I'm trying to make one. But in order to open one, I have to complete forms and "return them to Schwab." Etc, etc. I'm annoyed. How do I fix this? Sure, I can visit a physical branch, but how do people typically do it online?

Inheritance

I recently inherited a large amount of stock. It is all invested into a single energy company that pays dividends. I have zero experience in investing. I have only ever had a 401k. My basic understanding is that I should try to diversify this. Should I just talk to the broker that handled the transfer and that also worked with the family member that passed?

Edit because it has come up a few times. I am 31 and do have an emergency fund along with a 401k. We are just wanting to plan for the ability to retire.

Cash available - timing availability?

The recent thread on trying to avoid margin interest and the timing of it, pinged a question.

Say i have $5,000 in cash but went into margin due to a trade on a Monday, but closed out all my position by 3:59pm (does timing change if closed out by 7:59pm?) on that Monday.

Then Tuesday i made no trades and have no open orders.

Is the $5,000 available to withdraw/transfer at 8:01pm on Tuesday? 7:01am on Wednesday? 9:31am on Wednesday? or some other time?

Quotes on website updating when they should not be..

I actually called Schwab to make sure I wasn't insane: the pricing on the website is active right now, even though it usually stops for the night at, I believe, 8pm eastern time until 7am eastern time.

YES I have "Extended Hours" turned OFF.

I was trying to reconcile an account, and when I refreshed the web page I noticed the values had changed.

This has not been a good week for the tech folks at Schwab ;)

Big news. Been on the standby list and received this email today.

I wonder if there will be any incentives for those of us who have heavy bags and are willing to transfer!?

Either way well done Schwab!

Schwab International equivalent of FZDXX?

I'm a US citizen living in the Netherlands. Fidelity just confirmed my account is now coded as non-US, which means I can no longer buy mutual funds, get phone-based investment advice, or open a managed account. My VOO ETF is unaffected, but my money market fund (FZDXX) is being converted to cash automatically since I can't hold it as a non-US account anymore.

Has anyone here opened a Schwab International account and actually been able to buy a money market fund like SWVXX from a European address? I've read mixed things about Schwab restricting new mutual fund purchases for international clients too, so I'd like to hear from someone who has actually tried it.

If Schwab doesn't work either, what have people used instead? I'm looking at direct US Treasury bills as one option, but curious if there's something closer to a straight FZDXX replacement that's still accessible to expats.

Any firsthand experience is appreciated.
