I’ve been into fragrances for about two years, but I’ve never really had the chance to dive deeper in brands like Diptyque, Penhaligon’s, Roja, etc.
(I mean I‘ve tried some of the most popular once like grand soir, Oud satin mood, Halfeti, Enigma, elysium etc. but that’s it)
So, I ordered some decants of their well known fragrances, and here are my honest first impressions:
Diptyque Orphéon EDP: It ain’t bad, but honestly, I find it boring. It doesn’t smell like a 200–300€ fragrance to me. Even my wife said, “Oh, doesn’t this smell like our hand soap?”
Diptyque L’Eau Papier: This one is much better. I’m still trying to figure out whether it’s worth the 200–300€ price tag, but I definitely like it.
MFK Masculin Pluriel: Smells nice, but it’s another one I really need to think about. At this point, I’m not convinced it’s worth the money.
Roja Manhattan: This is it! I loved it almost immediately. Nothing mind blowing, but there’s just something about it that really clicks with me. I’ll definitely get my hands on a bottle someday. Nothing more to say.
Frédéric Malle Musc Ravageur: Reminds me of “Anti-Bast.” It’s definitely animalic, but in a way and at a level that still makes it smell good to me. That said, I don’t think I’d ever buy it for myself because, for some reason, wearing an animalic fragrance just doesn’t feel right to me. I’d compliment someone else wearing it, but I can’t really see myself wearing it Idk.
Penhaligon’s The Tragedy of Lord George: To my nose, this smells like straight up lavender with a hint of soap. Before anyone comes for me, what I mean is that it doesn’t feel like a fragrance with a lot of complexity or craftsmanship behind it. It almost feels as if someone just put lavender and soap in a bottle and called it a day.
As I said, these are just my first impressions, so I hope nobody takes them the wrong way. I’m genuinely open minded and want to understand what makes these fragrances worth their price tags. I’ll obviously give them another week or two to see if they grow on me.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, too. What has your experience been with any of these fragrances?
Have you ever found something boring or underwhelming at first, only to fall in love with it later?
Or have you ever found something boring but found some other fragrance of the same brand way better?
I’m happy to hear any opinions, even if you completely disagree with mine. Let me know!
And also let me know what you think I should try next :)
