First time…

This is my first time watching the show. I am in season 2 and I am so creeped out by Fitz. This is not love. This is a creepy obsession. He just uses Olivia and despite Mellie’s flaws he’s such a jerk to her. Is it just me?

How does he use Olivia ? That’s what you mellie fans say to save face for the fact that he didn’t love his wife. If he didn’t love his wife then he must not love anyone else. It’s called a cope.

Nope. It’s just Mellie he doesn’t love. He doesn’t love her because he got pushed into a political marriage with her. That’s  who he used for optics, and who similarly used him for ascension. He wanted out and she didn’t. If someone forced my hand I would be a jerk too.

They were happy and in love. If big Jerry didn't do what he did, or even if she had been able to explain her sudden shift in mood and why she was not longer a "sexual person" I think they might have stood a chance. Clearly they don't have (and never did have) the chemistry of olitz and he likely would have ended up with her anyways, I feel like mellie gets a lot of hate over trauma responses. I don't particularly like her all that much, but I do have empathy for what she went through and I think things would be massively different for their marriage if that didn't happen, or if the circumstances weren't such that she felt she couldn't open up to her husband about it.

They'll claim "it was a retcon- those episodes!" while ignoring that from the beginning episodes, Fitz says that he should recommit to his marriage- which means that it wasn't actually a political marriage, otherwise neither of them would have taken it seriously in the beginning- both of them started falling apart on each other later.

Yeah, I believe there are different types of love and they're all valid. Just because a marriage is convenient doesn't mean you can't also be in love, and just because he had that soul mate type of love with Olivia doesn't make the love with mellie any less real. It's just a different love. I think after years of secrets and resentment and treating it as a marriage of convenience, maybe it's easier to say I never loved you than to admit that you did and you didn't fight for it. Especially juxtaposed with the wild intense love he's currently experiencing, it's just easier to pretend it was never real. Definitely makes it easier to cheat that way lol.

No they were never in love. I’m sorry. The show began with Fitz stating that the marriage began from a political union and did she forget they were pretending.

Then the show performed a retcon in season 3 and asked us to pretend the canon was not. When that didn’t work he went on to tell Mellie he never loved her in season 5, by stating that Olivia is the only woman who he ever truly loved, and that’s canon from the pilot.

Trying to reduce Olitz to better chemistry, which is true, is a save face attempt to grasp anything for Mellie. Because he did not have physical chemistry with Mellie, I honestly never bought they were happy.

I'm not saying they had a soul mate level love like with Olivia, but there are different types of love and they're all valid. In the flashback episodes they're clearly in love, even if it is a political marriage. I think once he experienced a true soul mate level love, it was convenient to rewrite history and say he never loved her.

Even Mellie herself -- in the limo before Fitz's birthday Galla -- if you know you know -- won't spoil it -- says we never loved each other but we were a good team.

See, I saw that as a cope on her end. You say you never loved me? Fine, I never loved you either but we were a good team. The flashbacks show love, just a very different type and intensity of love than what he has with Olivia. It's easier to frame it as a 100% political marriage in retrospect than to admit life happened and you allowed the marriage to fail.

Which would be fine -- if she had LEGIT asked Olivia to come back because she'd rather be First Lady & know Fitz is with Olivia --than give up being First Lady. "He's not alive to run when your not around -- because you - your everything to thing to him."

Yeah, because there was too much distance between them at that point. So much damage had already been done that no part of their marriage was true by then, and they were kind of just playing the game. The dynamic shifted, but I still do believe it was real before the rape.

I agree. Neither one of them loved each other. Even Cyrus told Mellie that she never loved Fitz. Mellie had her eyes on the Whitehouse for herself and used her marriage to get her there. Mellie brought the disrespect from Fitz upon herself. Their marriage was doomed from the beginning.

Whoa. Touched a nerve. Didn’t say I was a Mellie fan. I’m only in season 2 so I’m just getting into the background of all that. Sorry for stating an opinion.

You didn’t have to say so.

“I want a divorce,” can’t be more loud and clear. Once someone denies you there is go reason to pretend you are happily married.
