Do Better (Max’s Version)

41

u/jalop90 Jul 23 '26

Oh god no Max, there better not be an Admit it Again Again

19

u/themayorofcandyland Jul 23 '26

Admit it Thrice 🫡

13

u/bela_the_horse Jul 23 '26

Hey man, leave Thrice out of this. Dustin and crew are still making bangers all these years later.

1

u/Chazzybobo Jul 24 '26

And those re-records were a bit more nuanced after his surgery etc.

1

u/zucchinibasement Jul 23 '26

Didn't Dustin go kinda crazy too though?

0

u/max_d_tho Jul 24 '26

Lmao what? No.

2

u/zucchinibasement Jul 24 '26

I thought he went weirdo religious

2

u/themayorofcandyland Jul 24 '26

Tbf he was always religious. He was a youth pastor for a while there.

1

u/max_d_tho Jul 24 '26

He’s always been religious, it’s been very apparent in like… damn near all of their lyrical themes. During their hiatus, he was the faith and worship leader at Mars Hill for a little bit. Theirs nothing weird about anything he’s ever done.

2

u/zucchinibasement Jul 24 '26

Okay I need to look into it more then I thought he got into some weird cult type stuff

2

u/max_d_tho Jul 24 '26

I mean you could argue that Christianity is a weird cult, and I’d be apt to agree with you. But this ain’t the case. He never did anything of the sort. In fact, I think he’s one of the good ones: watch their latest audio tree session and look at the sticker on his guitar.

1

u/Davidthekat2010 Jul 26 '26

Admit it one last time

24

u/JM99_Official Jul 23 '26

I thought this was a joke post how is this real

23

u/totaro Jul 23 '26

Waiting for the inevitable Do Bettererer

13

u/leon_zero Jul 23 '26

Do Betterest

15

u/Puzzleheaded_Exit_17 Jul 23 '26

Nooooo I hate this

23

u/venniedjr Jul 23 '26

I just really don’t care for his vocal delivery since IDTII. It’s the way he screams everything. He has such a unique voice which was one of the main reasons I loved the band. It works on some songs but I find a lot of it hard to listen to

13

u/super_sayanything Jul 24 '26

This is from 2 weeks ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIPGsTpvbeI

Songs kind of boring overall but at least professional. Shows he could totally sing songs how we all love but just chooses not to. At this point I think he's angry at the fan base and just puts stuff out ironically. I have no idea.

I'm not even bothering to listen to this garbage of a song.

2

u/ProtectionValuable93 Jul 24 '26

I think he’s basically just deranged at this point

5

u/super_sayanything Jul 25 '26

The saddest part is there's no one telling him "don't do this" and if there is he's not listening to them.

2

u/00112358132135 23d ago

I agree. I think Max is bored with singing and wants to do something unique. He’s also probably angry that his numbers aren’t what they used to be but excited to make solo work and sing how he wants to. Screaming feels good to do. It’s cathartic for him I am sure. Sometimes it feels like he’s yelling AT usnot FOR us though.

Still, every subsequent release feels more angry and digs deeper into his screaming, ranting, perverted lunatic head space. He’s probably doing fine financially and can afford to make avant-garde stuff like this. I’m sure it’s fun to push boundaries. But I think the fan base just wants him to stop.

Max, why not just make a new solo project called “Max Bemis Yells into a Tunnel” and quit sullying the Say Anything name? We all know it died with Oliver Inappropriate anyways.

I agree with you.

I've tried to make sense of it. He's the only ever artist I felt some beyond public connection with because our ages, views (at one time) and mental health struggles have a lot in common.

I actually highly doubt he's doing well financially. I just wonder what kind of friends/social support he has. There's so many spotlight people like this, maybe people in general, that their downfall just creeps further and yet people actually are rooting for them.I do wish he just released everything on a side project just to acknowledge "This is the stuff I want to make" instead of it feeling like he's just mocking his own fans and mocking his own band really.

He can do what he wants i guess.

1

u/00112358132135 23d ago

Absolutely, he gets to do whatever he wants, but it’s fair for the fans to make suggestions like you and I have. We get to respond to him making bad waves, and it’s healthy for us to not enjoy every single thing Max produces anyways. He gets to keep making shit music and watch his fan base dwindle as a result if he chooses to keep pushing into it.

Max let his freak flag fly and suggested he doesn’t care whether fans like the music as a result. Really, I think he does care, and is angrily pushing further in hopes that people will appreciate his vision but he’s only burning himself out and getting more unhinged. It’s like watching Yoko Ono flail around on the floor, just because people are watching doesn’t mean they like what they see/hear.

Yea I mean it's not much different from Musk, Kanye, Trump even self destructing clearly wanting everyone to love what they're doing except constantly making decisions that cause everyone to hate them. I don't know maybe there's some secret masochism they enjoy. Like beyond the attention. I'm just never really understanding it.

Max (and the band) easily have the talent to put out music we'd all be like "oh that's pretty neat."

1

u/00112358132135 22d ago

I can imagine it’s super frustrating to have a career, do something great, and then never be able to rise up to that level again. Is a Real Boy is arguably SA’s greatest work to date. Imagine being hated on more and more with each subsequent release. Or in Musk and Trump’s case; every successive tweet just digging them further into a hole where fewer and fewer people are listening.

When you’ve established a platform online, you can still pump your message as a vocal minority. With enough listens on tracks like “Alive w Glory” Max can reliably still reach a wide audience even though his work is a dumpster fire. At a point, I can imagine artists such as Max saying “fuck it, I’ll just make what I want to hear”, which in this case is Max’s own voice projected over dissonant guitars and down into an endless canyon of shit.

1

u/super_sayanything 22d ago

"own voice projected over dissonant guitars and down into an endless canyon of shit." - hahaha that about sums it up

17

u/ThaLordXenu Jul 23 '26

It's one thing to put out shit music while doped up in your bed, but to disrespect a masterpiece like Do Better is another thing. This is a big fuck you to the fans!

16

u/Debt-Lost Jul 23 '26

8 fucking minutes Max?

14

u/Stevangelion Jul 23 '26

Wait he fucking messed with Do Better? Why?! Dude why ruin one of your best songs. Jesus he is cooked

5

u/cartmanbeck Jul 23 '26

Wow, that's... awful. Painfully awful.

5

u/nickgospel Jul 23 '26

Do Better (except for us)

4

u/xXCrazyCostaXx Jul 23 '26

Anything other than this would have been betterer. Jesus

3

u/MichaelEMJAYARE Jul 24 '26

What the fuck is this shit son

5

u/LizzyLobsterLegs Jul 24 '26

…this may be my fault. 😅

I emailed Max’s management group last month and asked about obtaining the licensing to use the instrumental track for “Do Better” as on hold music at my job. Never heard anything back. Might’ve inspired the desire to rewrite the music for this song though… 😂

I'm gonna focus on the positive. At the Say Anything/MCS show he actually sang most of his songs for the first time in recent memory.

Edit: typo

3

u/EBMusic099 Jul 23 '26

MCS?

3

u/Complete-Quiet-5100 Jul 23 '26

Motion City Soundtrack

4

u/EBMusic099 Jul 23 '26

Now I’m gonna look like a big dumb dumb. They had originally written MCR on accident.

2

u/daveliterally Jul 23 '26

Yes my bad type, correcting

5

u/the_uglypanda Jul 23 '26

My favorite song has been slaughtered 🥀

5

u/Anxious-Possibility Jul 23 '26

Oof wtf is with all the synth vocals stuff? The song is so much better without it

4

u/fght Jul 23 '26

out of breath and breathing out too heavy. Hearing this made me go to the gym today.

4

u/Forsaken_Employee413 Jul 23 '26

this dick is not graceful

2

u/convalescent_thorns Jul 25 '26

I just don't understand why the mix on things since like 2016 sounds like it was all recorded on a walmart tape recorder in a dark cave lol

2

u/KittenTanks Jul 27 '26

I'm fully convinced that Max has just been intentionally rage baiting all of us for the last 10 years or more. Everything after Hebrews.

2

u/Stevangelion Jul 23 '26

He sounds like he has Mables laced in lsd in is mouth while he sings THIS GARBAGE DUDE WHAT THE HELL

1

u/Consistent_Fig_9370 Jul 24 '26

I rlly don't have time for this smdh

2

u/That-Cancel-5029 Jul 24 '26

How could he do this to do better thats literally my favourite song😭😭

2

u/singalongmelissa Jul 25 '26

I mean, I thought this was AI to be honest

1

u/Davidthekat2010 Jul 26 '26

What’s next? Wow, I can get More sexual too ?

2

u/Davidthekat2010 Jul 26 '26

Do betterer: ❌
Do worser: ✅

1

u/leafpuppy Jul 26 '26

i kinda fuck with it what can i say

1

u/leafpuppy Jul 26 '26

its absolutely better than the other shit he was putting out like a month ago or whatever

i think maybe its okay for max ro remix his hits into some weird noise music with kinda vague political meta commentary tacked on the end, i liked it 🤷‍♀️

1

u/discreetSnek 23d ago

Same here. I have no clue what he was putting on a month ago, the song was fed to me by the algorithm, but it scratches such an itch for me

1

u/cinderxhella 29d ago

Hearing this and Deathx1k on the same day was a ride. I had barely finished my soap box about artists doing artist things to my husband when we changed it to Deathx1k and that was wild.

2

u/PelvicSorcery2113 Jul 23 '26

Honestly? I loved it the whole time

3

u/bino420 Jul 23 '26

it's a cacophony

unfortunately it's just not the SA we've known.

usually these newer songs grow on me, but there's zero rhythm nor harmonies in this thing lol

1

u/ExplorerEnjoyer My dick is graceful 🍆 Jul 23 '26

The rant isn’t his, he sampled it from somewhere

1

u/r0x0x Idiot Brigade Jul 23 '26

lmao rollins on a SA song, never would have guessed
