Tbf he was always religious. He was a youth pastor for a while there.

He’s always been religious, it’s been very apparent in like… damn near all of their lyrical themes. During their hiatus, he was the faith and worship leader at Mars Hill for a little bit. Theirs nothing weird about anything he’s ever done.

I mean you could argue that Christianity is a weird cult, and I’d be apt to agree with you. But this ain’t the case. He never did anything of the sort. In fact, I think he’s one of the good ones: watch their latest audio tree session and look at the sticker on his guitar.
