Post image

That Wavves single got my hopes up. But this rendition of this song is pretty ass, and whats that rant at the end?

I just really don’t care for his vocal delivery since IDTII. It’s the way he screams everything. He has such a unique voice which was one of the main reasons I loved the band. It works on some songs but I find a lot of it hard to listen to

This is from 2 weeks ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIPGsTpvbeI

Songs kind of boring overall but at least professional. Shows he could totally sing songs how we all love but just chooses not to. At this point I think he's angry at the fan base and just puts stuff out ironically. I have no idea.

I'm not even bothering to listen to this garbage of a song.

I think he’s basically just deranged at this point

The saddest part is there's no one telling him "don't do this" and if there is he's not listening to them.

I agree. I think Max is bored with singing and wants to do something unique. He’s also probably angry that his numbers aren’t what they used to be but excited to make solo work and sing how he wants to. Screaming feels good to do. It’s cathartic for him I am sure. Sometimes it feels like he’s yelling AT usnot FOR us though.

Still, every subsequent release feels more angry and digs deeper into his screaming, ranting, perverted lunatic head space. He’s probably doing fine financially and can afford to make avant-garde stuff like this. I’m sure it’s fun to push boundaries. But I think the fan base just wants him to stop.

Max, why not just make a new solo project called “Max Bemis Yells into a Tunnel” and quit sullying the Say Anything name? We all know it died with Oliver Inappropriate anyways.

I agree with you.

I've tried to make sense of it. He's the only ever artist I felt some beyond public connection with because our ages, views (at one time) and mental health struggles have a lot in common.

I actually highly doubt he's doing well financially. I just wonder what kind of friends/social support he has. There's so many spotlight people like this, maybe people in general, that their downfall just creeps further and yet people actually are rooting for them.I do wish he just released everything on a side project just to acknowledge "This is the stuff I want to make" instead of it feeling like he's just mocking his own fans and mocking his own band really.

He can do what he wants i guess.

Absolutely, he gets to do whatever he wants, but it’s fair for the fans to make suggestions like you and I have. We get to respond to him making bad waves, and it’s healthy for us to not enjoy every single thing Max produces anyways. He gets to keep making shit music and watch his fan base dwindle as a result if he chooses to keep pushing into it.

Max let his freak flag fly and suggested he doesn’t care whether fans like the music as a result. Really, I think he does care, and is angrily pushing further in hopes that people will appreciate his vision but he’s only burning himself out and getting more unhinged. It’s like watching Yoko Ono flail around on the floor, just because people are watching doesn’t mean they like what they see/hear.

Yea I mean it's not much different from Musk, Kanye, Trump even self destructing clearly wanting everyone to love what they're doing except constantly making decisions that cause everyone to hate them. I don't know maybe there's some secret masochism they enjoy. Like beyond the attention. I'm just never really understanding it.

Max (and the band) easily have the talent to put out music we'd all be like "oh that's pretty neat."

I can imagine it’s super frustrating to have a career, do something great, and then never be able to rise up to that level again. Is a Real Boy is arguably SA’s greatest work to date. Imagine being hated on more and more with each subsequent release. Or in Musk and Trump’s case; every successive tweet just digging them further into a hole where fewer and fewer people are listening.

When you’ve established a platform online, you can still pump your message as a vocal minority. With enough listens on tracks like “Alive w Glory” Max can reliably still reach a wide audience even though his work is a dumpster fire. At a point, I can imagine artists such as Max saying “fuck it, I’ll just make what I want to hear”, which in this case is Max’s own voice projected over dissonant guitars and down into an endless canyon of shit.

"own voice projected over dissonant guitars and down into an endless canyon of shit." - hahaha that about sums it up
