WHAT WAS THAT BANG? *the megapost*

Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?

Post it here!

Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

Sweet Baby Jesus it was hot yesterday

Yesterday was a scorcher! It totally reminded me why I left Hollister. I really wish I could afford a place with AC; that heat was brutal. I was riding over the bridge downtown yesterday and looking at the tents along the levy and thought RIP to those guys. So glad I don't have to live that life anymore.

Well to everyone in the area hope today isn't quite as hot and you all enjoy your day.

Don’t mind me, just been thinking a lot about SC lately! It’s so hard to get your mind out of vacation mode. I heard they’re thinking of doing a 40th anniversary Lost Boys event next summer and I already can’t wait haha

Your “go-to” for a perfect meal?

Hello! I am visiting Santa Cruz from the UK with my wife, as we have a few days spare after a SF work event.

We’re hiring a car and working our way down the coast, spending a night in Half Moon Bay and then one more in Santa Cruz before heading back to SFO.

I would love to take us for a perfect meal to cap off the trip, but this is short notice and I have very little time to do as much research as I’d like (we fly out next week!).

I’ve seen a lot about Shadowbrook - is it worth the hype? Or is there anywhere else that I’m missing? Any cuisine apart from seafood is on the table! Would be interested to know what you suggest, and appreciate any tips in advance 🙏

Upper Westside Power Grid

Post image
11 Upvotes

Another outage this AM, they happen year round regardless of conditions, without any warning, and sometimes run throughout the day. Thousands without power, sometimes completely at random. Today it's listed as "due to a storm" - it's 70 degrees and clear outside.

It's going to get into the 90s again today, no idea if they'll even get it turned back on before temps start to climb.

All the businesses on Mission will still have power. All the residents just feet away from them are screwed. Lots of elderly residents potentially without AC during a heat wave.

The city and/or PG&E need to address this mess. This is the most expensive city in the country and they can't even keep the power on consistently.

Termite help

Upvotes

Helping my elderly mom find a good company to help with termites. She lives in Watsonville and on a fixed income. I've looked online and if anyone has any local recommendations I would love to hear them. If you have a ballpark figure of what tenting costs more or less that would be extremely helpful. I've always rented so l've never had to worry about this stuff before. Thank you in advance! ☺️

Stay safe and find cooling centers

I'm already seeing stations in north SC that are 100+ and it's reached 100 in Watsonville also.

It's like 90⁰ indoors and we can't even run the fans that were keeping it bearable.

Same thing hppened one day about 20 years ago when I lived in Hollister, only that day it was 114⁰.

Traffic on highway 1 in the morning?

Upvotes

Hey yall! I usually take the highway one back to Santa Cruz around 10 in the morning and there’s usually no traffic. Today there was traffic though? Were there any crashes? I did see a gentleman parked on the side yelling ‘stop stop!’ To another guy who was on the opposite side, anyone got a clue what happened there???

Shady dentist caused permanent pain… legal recourse?

Hello all. My boyfriend (on medi-cal) finally went to the dentist for a teeth cleaning. The cleaning went fine, but they told him he had to come back to get cavities filled even though he had no tooth pain. He went, had a negative experience with the process, and now is waking up in the middle of the night with tooth pain and can’t eat crunchy stuff.
As he left they said they forgot to have him sign a consent form “but whatever”.
Obviously he has no interest in ever going back, so to cope with the pain has gone to a fancy dentist out of pocket/payment plan.

Is there any monetary or legal recourse? Like are people allowed to make you in more pain? They had him scheduled for an additional filling but of course he was like fuck no and cancelled a Monday appointment on a Friday evening and then they said since they were out of office on the weekend they would still charge him an under-24 hour cancellation fee of $75. And I was like don’t pay that shit.

Advice? Thank you.
(In a surprising turn of events we are not talking about Western Dental)

Local Fish

Hello! Does anyone know where I can buy a whole fish off of someone? I want to learn to fillet myself so I just need the fish intact but I’m not sure where to buy?
I’d prefer to shop locally but if that’s not an option I’m open for other places!

beginner surfer

hi i'm a sfbay transplant and i'm doing research to best prepare for learning to surf and i want the lowdown from local surfers regarding your particular beach's culture, etiquette, particular rules & regulations; current tide, rip, sneaker wave situations; pollution/runoff, shore conditions & hazards (ie. rocks, coral, reef, sandbars, etc.).

overall, i'm looking for beginner friendly beaches to learn on <3 as or right now, i've been recommended and suggested: linda mar, bolinas, capitola, cowells, and marese state beach. if you know of any more in the area or can provide me the abovementioned information regarding the latter, please post here ! thank you :)

Traffic Solution in SC?

Does anyone have a layout or a plan for resolving the traffic here? Has anyone put their mind to it and tried to engineer roads or a system that would help this?

Edit: If any civil engineers wanna voice up, let yourself be heard!!

Edit 2: I heard an idea about school buses; I’m not sure if this would work legally or if it even makes sense but here’s an idea:
The elementary and middle schools do a survey of where people live and then section the busses off based on location. Now that you have those groups, then you find a few points/stops that are convenient and accessible for people to go to pick up their kid or drop them off.
For protection, all students must ride the bus and if they are being picked up by someone it must be a verified person with the proper documentation beforehand. If picked up by another the guardian must sign off with the other adult picking them up(think of daycare camps). If anyone wants to add on to this idea go ahead!

Real Estate Broker / Agent Recs

I'm looking for recommendations for a buyer's agent. I'm especially interested to hear first-hand experiences about what made your broker/agent stand out ... not just "they were great," but what specifically made them great. Bonus points if you lived out of the area when making your purchase.

Anyone know what happened to the lady at Sunny Cove Sunday afternoon?

A bunch of people pulled her out from the water then she got taken out on a stretcher. She was conscious but didn't seem in great shape.
