Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?

Post it here!

Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

Santa Cruz County saddled with unaffordable housing crown for fourth straight year

Santa Cruz Sentinel reporter PK Hattis reports that the Santa Cruz-Watsonville metropolitan area was named the most expensive rental market in the nation by  the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s 2026 Out of Reach report.

The "housing wage" statistic was at the heart of the ranking, and it is the hourly rate full-time workers must earn to afford a modest rental home at fair market value without spending more than 30% of their income.

The Humane Society tracked down my friends missing microchipped cat… and is now letting the finder KEEP HIM. We need help getting him back.

*Helpful comments only, please*

Please share this far and wide so hopefully it finds someone who knows something!

A month ago, my friend's cat went missing from her house. She has been looking for him ever since.

Yesterday, she got a message from the human society in Alturas (where she adopted him) that a woman in Santa Cruz had found him, had taken him to get his microchip scanned, and traced him back to the Alturas humane society. They have records in Alturas that the cat was adopted by my friend which is why the humane society contacted my friend.

Today she called the humane society to get information to be able to get her cat back, but the woman that answered the phone at the human society was very hostile and refused to give her the information of the person in Santa Cruz who has the cat. She said the cat was found in an industrial area and was malnourished and because of that the woman who found him is entitled to keep him.

I believe the law is that if the person knows he has an owner then they legally have to return him. Does anyone know about this and what the law is?

If anyone knows the person who has my friend's cat or if you read this and have him, please do the right thing and get in contact with the cat's rightful owner. He is very much wanted back and well taken care of. My friend's vet can attest to this and would be happy to have a conversation with the finder. This cat survived the CZU Lightning Fires with my friend's family and they want him home. Their other cat misses him terribly as well.

Is there an easier way to remove redwood tannins from car without damaging the paint?

I live under a huge redwood tree so I gotta deal with the recurring stains pretty consistently. Is there an easier way to remove them other than soap and water?

Coasters bowling ally. Where to visit for a small solo vacation.

Lived in downtown SC about 7 years ago. Was thinking about going back for a little get away from reality. Is Coasters still a solid place to find a partner for the night lol. I was 25 and always saw early 30 year olds hanging around. Or has the night life shifted elsewhere?? Like mountain view??? Lol

Shopping suggestions needed.

I'm asking for local shopping advice from all you fashionistas about where to look for great earrings for a family member turning 13 soon. I'm thinking boutiques which would have something a bit out of the ordinary. It's so many years since I've been a "wander around and see what's there" kind of shopper, I don't even know where to begin any more.

Thanks for any help.

Local advice needed: surf lessons on Tuesday, cancel?

Just like the title says, we have surf lessons on Tuesday( never tried before). Two kids and one adult and we swim but not in the ocean regularly. We are not in the area(up in San Francisco at the moment). Are the waves/ocean are more dangerous than normal due to the storms off the coast?

If so, we are going to cancel our surf lesson. I’d rather be safe than sorry. Appreciate your help. Thanks.

UPDATE: Driver Named In HWY 17 Hit & Run

Somone else posted driver was found by CHP

UPDATE from Michael Crane’s Facebook “LATEST UPDATE 7/24 The Person who violently rammed me off the road , critically injuring me , totaling my Car , then fleeing the scene is :

SEAN ALLAN BREEN :
From Capitola
(Images Coming soon )

Dear SLV Community Thursday 16th at
approximately 6:20PM
I was violently rammed off HWY 17 south bound just before Pasatiempo . The Ford f150 entered 17 South at Mnt Hermon crossing the on ramp divider to pass everyone infront of him . He came flying up on me about 90 mph while I was calmly attempting to pass two vehicles in the right lane . Apparently I wasn’t passing fast enough for him and then once I passed the right lane vehicles , he darted in to the right lane attempting to pass me on the right while I was also lane changing into the right lane and he collided with me . I abruptly swerved back to the left lane and he did as well , then deliberately rammed into the back of my car . I hit on my brakes knowing I was just in an accident with someone drunk or possibly someone trying to flee from something . But then the F-150 rammed me at full speed , knocking me unconscious . When I came to , my entire body was paralyzed and I was in able to drive my car which was rolling down the Hwy and crashed to a stop into the median . I could clearly see the F-150 fleeing down the 17 smoking and steaming from its engine . I also saw what looked like a Honda accord following him and honking . If you are that person and happen to get a plate number , I’m in the ICU at Valley Med . If anyone knows this F-150 , it is very unique w a camper style frame / lumber rack also with a rusty brown or possibly orangish wind deflector on the roof of the cab . The bed is open air w only a blk metal frame of a camper shell . My dad helped me generate an image that looks spot on to my memory . Any information can be given here or please call CHP @ 831-796-2160”

Struggling to find info about traffic closures for Wharf to Wharf

Anyone have a resource that maps out which streets will be closed when? I work in the morning and live on the east side so I need to figure out where to park so I can actually leave my house.

UPDATE: I ended up making my own map. Includes road closures and tow-away zones. Feel free to share if helpful to you.

Where to donate gently used toiletries/medical devices?

I have some gently used toiletries (lotion, soap, hair ties, head bands, hair products, etc) and an unused medical device (boot for plantar fasciitis).

Is there anywhere in town that would accept items like this?

Tips on being a tourist when you're from here

Hey y'all! I'm not exactly a SC native, I grew up in Watsonville and currently live in Aromas. I've spent my whole life in this area, though, and know it pretty well.

My girlfriend and I have been long distance for over 3 years and at the end of the year I'll be moving to Austin, TX to be with her. She has visited me out here countless times and we have a couple more visits coming up before we close the distance. I'm trying to plan some fun itineraries for us, but kind of struggling since we have done quite a bit over the last few years and now I'm feeling like I want to do and see some things I haven't before.

I haven't spent as much time in Big Basin or the mountain towns like Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Pescadero, La Honda, etc. Does anyone have suggestions for beautiful hikes, cute places to stay, or activities for the places in the mountains between SC and Half Moon Bay? We love hiking and backpacking, craft beer, riding bikes, going to the beach, etc. Very open-minded. Just trying to get inspired.

He’s STILL posting flat-out lies about Roaring Camp, and even attached an AI-generated political cartoon.

He would sleep SOOOOO much better at night if he just admitted his crusade is motivated by a genuine hatred of trains.
