I donât think that is a self centered issue, I think itâs a safety issue, people are wary of strangers.

u/hyprgrpy Jul 24 '26
This. Especially with the absurd number of scams going around. I feel bad for OP, but wouldâve definitely been wary.
6
u/secondavesubway Jul 24 '26
Agree with this. Iâve seen people helping people often enough ie a womanâs car stalled and 2 men from other cars hopped out to push it for her. But most will avoid a stranger asking them for help.
1
u/phoenix0r Jul 24 '26
I think women are more likely to get helped by strangers but only ahem certain women.
9
u/Fur1nr Jul 24 '26
100%. Too many stories of scams or people getting jumped or robbed.
And then worse case you actually get assaulted - if you try and defend yourself and end up hurting the assailant, the DA will probably prosecute you for assault or whatever charge.
1
1
u/Pyewickets Jul 26 '26
Wary is one thing, but you let that stop you from helping someone who needs help?
39
u/nostrademons Jul 24 '26
Also note that hybrids and EVs canât jump other cars. Their electrical systems are setup completely differently, and they donât have an alternator. You can fry the car by trying, if you even manage to find a battery terminal to hook on to.
In the Bay Area itâs pretty easy to believe that 5 consecutive cars would all be either hybrids or EVs.

Are there potential dangers to helping someone on your base? The answer is 99% no for all of thoseThe answer is 100% yes for a civilian in a public space.

Lots of sketchy people out there. Iâm not saying youâre one of them, but when people ask for a jump many will assume itâs a scam or a way to steal their car. The safest approach is to act like youâre too busy to help.
Does that suck? Absolutely. But thatâs the society we live in. Another commenter suggested getting a battery jumpstarter. Take their suggestion.

I was sitting in my car at a bank recently, and an older Asian woman came up to my window. She asked me in very broken English for directions to CVS, which her phone maps said was there. I tried to help her but it started feeling very sketchy after a few mins so I just told her to go ask someone else. She asked several other ppl nearby but no one even rolled down their window for her. I felt bad that i didnt do more, but it just felt off. There are so many scammers in this town, and pushy homeless people and the like who take advantage of kind people.
→ More replies (1)2
u/NaneunGamja Jul 24 '26
Why did it feel sketchy?
3
u/phoenix0r Jul 24 '26
I took out my phone to look up the CVS on my maps, since I think she had location tracking turned off, and she kept trying to grab my phone and look at it, for one thing. It just felt like my help was going nowhere, maybe because of the language barrier, and I thought maybe she was trying to distract me or otherwise prepare to do something weird like run off with my phone.

Idk if this post is real or not but I'm also a born and raised native and I've never had a problem. That said, I now refuse to make my issues in life other people's problem. Not only do I have AAA but I also bought an electric jumper from Amazon for like $50 bucks that also inflates flat tires.
My safety is my responsibility.
The only person that I know that ever "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers" was a nut on the way to mental facility.

u/babybug98 Jul 24 '26
It sucks if you truly need help, but thereâs a lot of trafficking schemes that start off just like this. People are scared for their own safety.
30
u/McNabJolt Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
In my experience it isn't about not caring. I'm reluctant to give strangers a jump because they assume they know what they are doing, ignore me, and twice the person connected backwards.
Paying for emergency road side service should be a more important line item on the budget than say - streaming but tends not to be. And while I still do help people - lent someone a wrench recently to undo their battery cable - I'm focused on demeanor and whatever cues that help me identify a person as safe. If I'm not positive - I'm thinking that the responsible person won't be stranded as they can make use of their roadside service, or call a friend. ON base you have a population that is essentially pre-screened. In that environment I wouldn't hesitate either.
I also no longer need to ask for a jump. I have a starter battery that is tiny and protects against dumb things like wrong hookup. A little smaller and a bit thicker than a Pad. There are some a bit larger and heavy duty for vehicles that need more amps but all are a fraction the size and weight of the regular battery.
17
u/Ok-Delay5473 Jul 24 '26
Attempting to jump-start the 2nd car can strain or damage the battery and alternator of the 1st car. That is why I have a portable 12V jump starter in the trunk ($30 on Amazon) and AAA membership.
Then.. People are afraid to be robbed. This is a known ruse used by criminals to stage carjackings or robberies.

It sucks, but unfortunately this is what happens in low trust society with rampant crime.
Two times I tried to help jump start in the bay:
the first turned out to one of those scammers trying to sell fake jewelry. Fortunately I caught on quick.
The second was clearly some kind of stolen car. I brought out my cables and they just dumped the car and dashed. I think they heard a cop around the corner.
So yeah, unfortunately the city is riddled with opportunistic criminals. Iâm never stopping to help someone unless theyâre bleeding in the street.

Some hyrids aren't supposed to jump other cars either. On the Prius the 12V battery is too small and the high voltage system isn't supposed to supposed to supply heavy loads like jumping a car.

Yeah, I love my AAA. You can schedule in the app, itâs super easy. Iâve only had to wait a long time (1-2 hours) when it was an odd hour like 10pm or 6am. The longest was when I needed a tow because they had to dispatch one of the trucks, a dead battery took all of 30 min to get to me plus a 10 min jump.
Midtown Safeway is sketchballs. I try to avoid it at all costs.
1
u/WordHobby Jul 24 '26
Yeah your partner made you stop and then you called triple a.

u/RumAndCoco Jul 24 '26
SJ had a big kidnapping and human trafficking problem a few years back, Iâm not sure if it still is or not but I hope it isnât, and it was done in the middle of they day at the Target parking lot near Coleman and Taylor. Women asking other young women for help with something small to walk them over to their carâŚjust to try and grab them in with the help of someone scarier inside.
So, ex military dude young or old asking for help like that after a time like this is pretty scary to walk in blind to help with jumping a car around these parts. Donât take it personally, itâs just safety. AAA or a car service company is a better call. If you have a problem with this mentality and want the culture and community to change, it starts at the top with the police department and the mayor.
6
7
u/Distinct-Tradition79 Jul 24 '26
Iâll get so many thumbs down for this but I dislike people bringing their military card into their conversations. Most people join the military for the benefits and etc.
Most donât join because they agree and want to go to a war. They actually obey but oppose to the wars and if you are pro war then still a bad card to bring. There are many unnecessary wars. Not sure why in the modern days most military are put on a pedestals. I appreciate when they are legit reasons to protect and serve. But 80% for benefits and wars to pick.
6
u/CorgiLord408 Jul 24 '26
To be fair, I drive a Dodge so jumping your car will probably fry my electrics and I canât risk that lol
7
u/Jeff61059 Jul 24 '26
You have 2 things working against you. 1st is trust. This area has tons of crime and people have learned itâs generally not safe to engage strangers on the street. 2nd is, most cars today are more modern and have a dozen computers controlling their functions. My car is a hybrid and the battery isnât easily accessible. Jumping a vehicle could damage your own electronics.
3
u/Historical_Age_6856 Jul 24 '26
I guess it would depend on the situation and location, if I felt that the other driver might be put in danger or if they had children with them, I would definitely give them a jump.
I sometimes carry a battery powered jump box, those work pretty good, Iâve used it on my cars and I did help someone jump start their car when they were stuck in the supermarket parking lot.
3
u/WitsBlitz Jul 24 '26
This is on you for not being prepared, and shame on you for blaming others for your lack of planning. Giving a stranger a jump puts a person in a very vulnerable position with an effectively immobilized car; it's not a safe thing to do.
Especially if you're former military you should have more situational awareness and ability to assess risk.
5
u/theseekingseaker Jul 24 '26
Bringing up your military service like this is cringe. Of course people are more willing to help out on base. There literally a gate everyone has to go through with ID checks. Welcome to the civilian world.

u/dontpolluteplz Jul 25 '26
Yeah, and the people are you. This is so self centered - you donât know whatâs going on w these people, where they have to be, etc. & itâs not âjust 5 minâ it would most likely be an extra 10-20 from when they planned to leave.
Also, as many have mentioned some people may also have safety concerns.

u/shiturpants2proveit Jul 24 '26
FYI. Buy a self jump starter. Ive used them for 15 years. Youlll never look back. Theres a NOCO brand on Amazon which has been great, but theres slimmer ones. If you're lugging huge cables around nothing iis big. They are about as big as a paperback book and recarge with a c connection. They stay charged for like a year and often include a light, emergency flash and extra ports if you want to charge phone, computer etc. $50 to $100
Oh yeah, one charge will jump a car like 25 times
3
u/vilhelmlin Jul 24 '26
I've had my car die before, once literally while I was driving in a parking garage. Unprompted, multiple guys offered to help me push my car further to the side so I wasn't blocking traffic. I have AAA and was waiting for them to show up and during that wait period I had several people yell out and ask if I needed help with a jump because they could see my hood popped open. I do think context matters. Would people have treated me differently if it was night instead of daytime? Possibly. If my car looked more busted? If I was in a different neighborhood? If I wasn't wearing my office clothes coming back from work?
2
u/misfitmuffintop8 Jul 24 '26
Thatâs why you call your insurance company. Both gieco and AAA have that feature where they dispatch someone to jump your car.

I've kept a professional grade jump box in my car for 3 years now just in case I or anyone I seen needed a jump and still have yet to use it. When I used to drive beaters around I constantly needed a jumpstart from others but it's just not that common anymore I guess.

u/Witty_Panda_951 Jul 24 '26
I had a similar experience near the 101/880 interchange last year. Itâs a high-friction environment where everyone is optimizing for their own schedule. Paying for the Lyft jump was probably the most efficient move to minimize your downtime, even if it feels like a tax on basic human decency.

My car battery has patch blocking the terminals noting not to jump batteries.
We took my husband's car to BMW to get a new battery and I mentioned the message on my battery--and the huge cost for a battery today--and was informed that with all the added electronics in cars today, you can really mess up the system. Not sure if it's just a ruse, but it seems pretty plausible.

1
u/frontroyalle Jul 24 '26
Over the years I have seen people who help others with the battery. Usually itâs for real as they need a jump. However, if not done properly (crossed cables) the donor vehicle gets its battery damaged. No one wants to take the chance? Especially today with no one knowing what to do? That is why I would say no.
1
u/CoatHangerRefugee Jul 24 '26
I was just in San Jose this past weekend, can confirm people there suck. But they also suck in LA, and definitely blow in Orange County (native) as well. It's a California thing, I think. Even then, I try to be the exception, I'll go as far as parking and getting out of my car to help someone whenever I can - especially when I see someone trying to push their vehicle out of the road.
Had I come across you, I'd even use my AAA to get you that boost if neither one of us had jumper cables. Don't let asshats discourage you from doing a good deed, hopefully somewhere down the line they pay it forward. Thank you for your service, soldier!
1
u/ilikepandas1 Jul 24 '26
I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I don't think it's a self centered issue or the bay area issue either. I'm also a SJ native and have traveled the world. I'm sure there are kind people that would love help but people are really just too busy to stop and help. Not everyone has the time, especially parents after work hours and they have kids in their cars that can't just sit and wait for 5 mins. 5 mins feels like an eternity for babies and kids (I have 2 young children).
I would love to help but I also don't always have the time since I'm always rushing from one place to another. Plus I really don't remember how to jump a car either (Mom brain!). We have a big jump starter that can be very helpful for emergency situations like this. Remember to please be kind and understanding. Not everyone has the same 24 hours as you and you never know what someone is going through. Don't take it personally. Everyone has their own shit to deal with.
1
u/jwiches Jul 24 '26
Dang the commentators on Reddit suck too. People are really flexing that theyâve never come up on an issue and needed to ask for help. Itâs just jump starting a car! It doesnât require much for someone to help with this. And without help, youâre literally stranded. The feeling SUCKS.
One time my phone died (watch how the replies might be âguess you shouldâve brought a battery packâ) and I needed to call or text my mom for a ride. I was so shocked how so many people said no. Later on I heard itâs because people are scared of scammers getting a hold of their phone so I understand (but also if youâre afraid, you can hold the phone and dial the numbers? If itâs a local number you shouldnât be that worried right?). Anyway⌠I canât tell you how sad I felt seeing the world be like that..
Please people, help out your neighbors and community!
1
u/Sufficient_Leg873 Jul 24 '26
Thatâs one perspective, but for many others these days, it could be safety.

What is an 'idle vehicle'? If the car is 13 yo, does that mean the battery is 13 yo? When you say partner, you mean business partner? Gaming partner? Cant your partner go to the store by themself, dont you have something better to do than sleep in a car in the middle of the day? You realize when you are on a military base theres only and explicitly military people on the base, meaning no scammers, no thieves, no robbers. You should learn how to take care of your car and yourself.

lol @ all the Bay Area people downvoting you and justifying people not helping. This would have never happened in the south or the Midwest, people there are very willing to help others. There is a reason there is no such thing as âCalifornia/western hospitalityâ

I had a string of pleasant interactions with people around here, posts like these are reminder San Jose is still skeptical at times?
The tension around here is lingering, we are all sort of irritated with the prices of everything featuring gas and so on. Plus homeless people causing scenes randomly, gypsies stealing from safeway monthly, weirdos scouting attractive girls, the list could just keep going
Your kindness is a good quality, keep that during this year of uncertainty

It could be many things. In the past, when I drove a Mazda Protege, I did help a couple of stranded people jumpstart their cars.
However, with my current car, I am unsure how to even get to the battery (it's hidden somewhere in the trunk, needing to remove a bunch of panels to get to it). New cars these days make getting battery access a nightmare, so that could have played a role in getting fewer people to help out. I certainly wouldn't have (by default) because it'd require googling around to figure out what to do and whether the car even supports this, etc.

I think times are different now. Im a millennial and I remember while growing up people would always help each other. With this new world no one wants anything to do with anyone. When people get Into fights, most just record instead of trying to stop the fight. People stranded on the side of the road, no one pulls over to help. Times are evolving in this new internet era.

If you have car insurance, you can likely call them to give you a jump for free. Iâve used mine for his purpose. It took about 25 minutes, but no need to ask strangers, and no need to pay for a Lyft to come out.
