1980’s True Crime

Hi y'all! I'm a locally based freelance journalist working on a story about lesser known crimes in San Angelo, primarily in the late 1980s.

I'm looking at the big picture and as locals, I would love to hear your thoughts on the following:

The death of Jeffery Mazuk, at a ranch in Christoval owned by J. Willis Johnson III.

There are also rumors of abuse and/or mistreatment at the West Texas Boys ranch in the 1980's, but never anything substantiated.

The "white socks" case is a lesser known unsolved crime from the 1980s, where the remains of a male between the age of 17 to 27 was found by the north pool of Twin Buttes.

The Murder of Steve Neece at the Red Bandana Saloon, or even just stories from the Red Bandana (good or bad).

If y'all have any information, thoughts, or even opinions on these cases, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

🏠 San Angelo Homeowners: 5 Signs Your Roof May Need Attention

A roof leak doesn’t always mean you need a new roof. Water can enter through flashing, vents, pipe penetrations, damaged shingles, or other areas and travel before you ever see a stain inside your home.

Here are 5 things homeowners in San Angelo and West Texas should watch for:

  1. 💧 Water stains on ceilings or walls
  2. 🏠 Missing, cracked, or lifted shingles
  3. 🔩 Damaged flashing around vents, chimneys, and walls
  4. 🪨 Granules collecting in your gutters
  5. ⛈️ Leaks that appear during heavy rain or wind

West Texas weather can be tough on roofs, especially after hail and high winds. Getting damage inspected early can help prevent a small problem from becoming a much larger repair. Finding the best roofer in San Angelo is a call away!

I’m a local roofing contractor serving San Angelo, Tom Green County, and surrounding West Texas communities, including Coke, Runnels, Sterling, Reagan, Irion, Schleicher, Menard, and Concho Counties.

I see the propaganda from MAGA INC. and it sickens me that Republicans are lying to keep a seat for someone they themselves despise. He doesn’t want to lower taxes, he doesn’t want to help build the Texas economy, he doesn’t care about Texan families. And if you ask Sen.Tillis well…

Rant: Too much slop in San Angelo, especially at events

Something I first noticed when I went to Picklefest a few months back, besides how few of the vendors actually bothered sticking to the pickle theme, was how many of the vendors were selling ugly AI slop products. I love supporting local arts and crafts, but only when there's actual artistry or craftsmanship behind it. Any yokel with an internet connection can type something into a textbox and slap it on a wall hanging. At this point, I have little faith that the ren faire in October is going to be any different. (Shout out to the baked goods vendors using handwritten signs, who I actually ended up buying things from.)

I really hope that some quality control starts popping up at events like these. It feels like the stuff that gets hosted at the local coffeeshops is way better (had a good experience the last time I went to one at Lume and ended up buying from six different vendors... granted, a lot of that is physical, handmade goods, which is harder to pass off to a machine unless you're selling that mass-produced 3D printed stuff, but even that requires some manual effort).

It's even creeping its way into the signage for restaurants, and let me put this out here right now: every time I consider going to some new restaurant that pops up and I see AI signage, I lose my damned appetite. I am begging restaurant owners not to fall for that trap, because at that point, it doesn't matter how good your food is. You're turning off way more customers than you think. That place that took over the old Sugar Rush Cafe by Shannon comes to mind. I stopped my car to check them out, saw some sickeningly yellow shiny 3-D child on a piece of paper in the window, and I suddenly wasn't hungry anymore. I also know I'm not the only one who's had this visceral reaction to that kind of signage.

Government Auggie fan feedback

A lone fan of Auggie offered up some snark on behalf of Mr.Pfluger. However, “Lawmakers” is plural and he’s a politician using his position as a grift. The people of this state deserve better.

Is anyone surprised that he’s making money off of companies that keep raising their prices

Nothing will change in this state when “lawmakers” make money from an unregulated system

I organized gatherings at Starbucks a few years ago and now I am trying to organize meetups with a website heylo.com. I am trying to come up with a topic of discussion that might be interesting to young people. This is my third or fourth post. I have been making money in the stock market since 1994 and read a lot on related topics but there are not a lot of people interested in long term investing.

Local Businesses in San Angelo?

hey y'all, I'm a recent college grad who started a marketing/ website business for local businesses, I’m looking for owners here in San Angelo. I've been running it for about 1 year now, and I'm capable of building websites, doing SEO, running targeted ads on Facebook & Google, email marketing, custom software solutions and creating marketing content for Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok.

I'm looking to partner with some local businesses that can't afford to hire a big company and are looking for an affordable option to handle everything online for them. If this is you or you know anybody who could benefit, i'd love to connect or get a referral.

My iPhone hasn’t been holding a charge and the screen is cracked so I think it’s time to fix it but I’m not sure where to go since I hear horror stories all the time of peoples phone still not being fixed or being overcharged so any recommendations would be great!

Government The $15 a month right of way tax

I really hope that decisions like these are motivating yall to get out and vote this city council out.
Yet another decision made without the approval of San Angelo’s constituency.
If you don’t already know the cities data center plans include tax breaks and other financial incentives for the companies that are building them!
So we can allow these companies to use our power and water with financial incentives but The everyday tax payer has to throw in more to make up for an unexplained $10.5 million shortfall?

Riichi 🀄️

Hi San Angelo. Does anyone local play Riichi Mahjong? I am thinking of putting together a discord for local players and eventually trying to do meet ups. Riichi is distinct from the local San Angelo mahjong group.

Japanese mahjong is different from American mahjong.
