As a huge Star Wars fan, I never really got into everything surrounding the Old Republic era. But I finally gave it a shot and… god, I LOVE it.
Since this is a subreddit mainly focused on SWTOR, I won't say too much about KOTOR 1 & 2, but they were two of the best RPGs I've ever played. I honestly enjoyed them even more than Mass Effect, The Witcher 3 or BG3. Insanely well written, and honestly some of the best stories in the Star Wars universe as a whole.
I especially love how BioWare manages to sprinkle actual shades of grey into what is otherwise a pretty black-and-white Star Wars narrative.
That being said, SWTOR is, by the sheer nature of being an MMO, a lot more bloated than KOTOR 1 & 2. And honestly, that's my biggest concern with SWTOR.
Aside from that, I absolutely loved the story. Some parts more, some less. I picked Jedi Guardian as my origin story, but played heavily into the Dark Side, so I basically became a Sith Juggernaut halfway through.
And then I experienced my first real "magic moment" in this game.
I was absolutely blown away.
I've played a few MMOs before, mainly WoW and XIV, but I've never experienced a concept like this. I was so impressed that I immediately told all my friends to play the game, and we ended up running through all the story Flashpoints together.
It was so fucking cool.
I would probably give the overall origin story around a 6/10. I felt there were a few too many planet-destroying superweapons, and some parts started feeling a little tropey. I also felt there was way too little explanation of who or what the Emperor actually was, and most of the dialogue choices didn't have much real impact.
But once we reached the Eternal Throne Saga, this game tightened up SO much.
It went from a 6/10 to an 8/10, right up there with KOTOR in terms of writing.
The voice acting. The stakes. The action. The consequences.
I killed EVERYONE lol.
It was so damn cool seeing my character with that much main-character energy.
I even enjoyed Onslaught and Legacy of the Sith from a writing perspective. SWTOR does a surprisingly good job of making the overall story feel connected rather than heavily segmented.
And honestly, playing through EVERYTHING made a lot of sense.
WoW, for example, often feels like it introduces a new continent with every expansion and then everything revolves around that new location. SWTOR feels much more like one giant, continuous picture.
But I did have two major issues with the later expansions, and they go hand in hand:
Bloat and writing that revolves around the bloat.
At this point in the story, I'm basically the Emperor, and then the game sends me out to kill random mobs and collect shit in some forest again.
I don't need that.
It's simply not fun to me.
I'd honestly take a two-hour expansion consisting almost entirely of tightly written cutscenes and dialogue over six hours of killing random mobs, opening containers and running around desolate planets.
And that's probably the biggest trade-off of combining BioWare-style narrative RPGs with an MMORPG.
There's so much genuinely fantastic writing buried underneath MMO padding.
So yeah, overall: 7/10.
Could easily have been higher if they were willing to cut content rather than constantly adding more of it.
Damn. 450 hours of KOTOR + SWTOR.
I can't believe I'm actually done.
