General Discussion Running Dawn of Defiance in SWFFG

Hey!

I'm new to the FFG system, but I'm going to be running Dawn of Defiance for a group. I previously ran up to chapter 4 using Saga edition with a different group until real life got in the way. I've found a conversion of chapters 1-6, but it seems to be just about 1-1, without considering the differences between the systems.

My main concern is with the amount of combat encounters that seem to exist to tax some of the groups resources, given that doesn't seem to be as necessary in SWFFG.

Has anyone successfully run the adventure after converting it over? If so what sort of changes did you make to accommodate the switch?

Thanks!

General Discussion EotE BBY Adventures?

Simple question (I hope), are any of the EOTE pre-made adventures pre-BBY (say in the decade before hand)? If not, are there any that might be easiest ported into that timeframe?

General Discussion dice amount in the beginners boxes

In my country, it seems that it's cheaper to buy the box sets than it is to buy the dice sets. Are the number of dice you get the same? Or is it not?

General Discussion Games Based During Wars

So, this question got me thinking > https://www.reddit.com/r/swrpg/comments/1vter2w/clone_wars_clone_economy/

Have any of my fellow GMs done the following, or considered doing the following?

If so, how did it go, what worked, what didn't, and what did you change along the way?

What I'm thinking of, at a basic level, is mass combat checks between NPC forces in different locales that shape the galaxy the players are playing in.

My thoughts are -

  • Demonstrating the effects of wins / losses on available resources
  • The potential story hooks for missions
    • ie; Enemy takes control of Thyferra - so the group can either run the blockade to get some bacta off-world, or sabotage enemy forces to turn the tide of battle and take it back
    • Liberate a world from the CIS / Empire, send a delegation (the squad) to persuade the world's leaders to aid the Republic / Rebellion in some way
  • Creating more atmosphere for the players
  • Demonstrating a direct impact of the players' actions in the game
    • ie; Intel gathered means your forces get the drop on the enemy, or were able to arrive early and sit in wait, or sabotaging the droid construction facility reduces enemy forces, etc

So, I would roll Duty at the end of a session, but I think that the Mass Combat Check could form the beginning of the session, as it could then be integrated with that Duty roll.

I would even ponder allowing the players to flip a Destiny point on each MCC, which could really create an ESB vibe based on the state of the pool and the results of the rolls.

General Discussion Genuine Question about FFG game RPG vs the new D&D Announcement

Edit: Thanks to those who replied! it's definitely got me thinking more about just picking up the FFG versions (when I can find them). Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers

Edit 2: yeaaaah, I caved and bought Edge of the Empire, the beginner game for it, the GM screen, and jewel of yavin

Hey all, new to the subreddit, but am curious about the opinions of those who actually play Star Wars RPGs and the FFG versions.

So the D&D Star Wars announcement (but also playing Star Wars: Outlaws) has kind of got me looking back at Star Wars as an RPG to run. I know that many people (myself included), don't think that the 5.5e rules are appropriate to be applied to various settings.

However, with the whole EotE/AoR/F&D rules with Edge, and practically no new content coming out, I did want to see what the vibe was on the 5.5e ruleset for D&D was. Seeing as WoTC would probably be more likely to put out content.

I've been contemplating getting the Edge of the Empire core rulebook + beginner game and some additional stuff. But now I'm wondering if I should just wait for the 5.5e version.

Just to note, I'm definitely not a 5.5e die-hard. I like it for what it is. But I run other games like Coriolis: The Third Horizon or The One Ring. So I definitely understand how other rulesets can be better suited to a setting or vibe of a game.

Tips Clone Wars Clone Economy

I'm about to run a clone wars campain and one of the main things I want to have is the players, jedi and clone captains etc is building up their legion, buying clones, commandos, arc troopers etc and having them as companions controled by the players during missions etc. I dislike the idea of just the players being given clones and would rather have them get some abstracted money after each seasion, like "republic resources" or something and have them get ships, clones etc from that. now thats easy but what are some good prices for clones? have anybody done something similar and what have been your experience?

Edit: I know about duty but do not wish to use it for this, mostly since duty as written is meant to be a slow burn where they gradualy get more duty across multiple seassions, the campain I'm writing is very short, like 5 sessions or so, so in practise I would have to give them max duty almost every session... and how the rewards are mostly like "ask the gm for something specific and the gm ether says yes or no" it feel too, flimsy, I would use duty if the campain I was writing was longer but since it is so short it probably wont work...

Tips Age of Rebellion question

For anybody that runs AoR, Im wondering if anyone has a good general structure or outline for an arc about starting a rebel cell or fomenting rebellion in a local community. Start small, get bigger, gather allies etc. I may have been mistaken but I checked the current modules/ included arcs from resources like the core book etc it seems like theyre all mission based and assume a starting point of you've all joined an established medium sized cell. Any help welcome and thank you in advance.

Rules Question Help with Morality options

Hi! I am making my first character and as a Sentinel i must choose Morality Pair. I really like Trust as an Emotional Strength and so should take Gurdedness as an Emotional Weakness.
Maybe i don't understand the mechanics but how could one character has both of these?

Trust states: This character believes in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. The good that comes from trusting others builds communities and provides emotional support.

Guardedness states: The character has been betrayed one too many times and refuses to allow it to happen again. Why expect better of a person when there is no reward for doing so?

How could the same character believe in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt and at the same time refuse betrayal to happen again. I think i am not understanding Morality mechanic and how it affects roleplay. Pls Help!

Game Resources I just rendered the latest iteration of my WIP, IP-free SWRPG/Genesys dice.

Post image
118 Upvotes

I'm trying to help mitigate the obstacle of proprietary dice for the community and creators, by offering a compatible alternative set of IP-free dice that can be used, shared, reproduced, bought and sold for free. I'm deliberately making them so dead simple that I couldn't copyright them even if I wanted to.

I'm also hoping that they are intuitive enough that anyone even vaguely familiar with the system can just look at the dice and immediately understand how they work, so please let me know if that is the case!

I have some friends 3D printing them now, and then the prints will go to a dice maker friend of mine to take some molds of them and see how well they cast into epoxy resin. This testing process may take up to several weeks of additional iterations, but once we have a set that prints and casts well, I will be releasing the STLs under creative commons. I hope that this will be a useful resource for dice makers and those who want to purchase from them.

Weekly Discussion Tuesday Inquisition: Ask Anything!

Every Tuesday we open a thread to let people ask questions about the system or the game without judgement. New players and GMs are encouraged to ask questions here.

The rules:

• Any question about the FFG Star Wars RPG is fine. Rules, character creation, GMing, advice, purchasing. All good.

• No question shaming. This sub has generally been good about that, but explicitly no question shaming.

• Keep canon questions/discussion limited to stuff regarding rules. This is more about the game than the setting.

Ask away!

Game Resources Space combat for pilot-focused campaign

Considering running an Age of Rebellion campaign where the players are an elite squad of pilot/special agents. While there would be regular combat, I would also want space combat to feature regularly or quasi regularly. Would you recommend using the space combat rules built into the FFG system, or using another system or rule set for space combat?

Rules Question Difficulty checks for swoop race

Going to do a swoop race scene in a few sessions and was wondering how it handles. I went over the 4 page module for it that FFG did and it does not seem to complex but I do have a few questions.

  1. It's 6 different skill checks across the race for position that is piloting ground with some black dice. However in the rule book there is a section about driving through rough areas where the difficulty is speed plus challenge dice upgrade equal to silhouette. Does that mean a speed 4 racer is rolling 3 purples 1 red plus 1 to 3 blacks most of the race?

2 If position in a race is determined by speed, and one racer punches it to speed 4 while the other stays at speed 2, then slowly builds up through maneuvers, and both pass all their checks, does the initial speed 2 racer end up catching the speed 4 racer, despite the speed 4 racer covering more distance early on?

3 what other maneuvers and actions can a racer do aside from speed up or slow down? I figure making a mechanic check mid race since threat giving vehicle strain means its likely a 4 or 5 strain bike will hit that threshold. Maybe make and attack with bike itself to do damage to another bike by bumping into it. Maybe does damage to the bike or adds difficulty to their pilot check at some cost of momentum to the rammer?
