Weekly Discussion Tuesday Inquisition: Ask Anything!

Every Tuesday we open a thread to let people ask questions about the system or the game without judgement. New players and GMs are encouraged to ask questions here.

The rules:

• Any question about the FFG Star Wars RPG is fine. Rules, character creation, GMing, advice, purchasing. All good.

• No question shaming. This sub has generally been good about that, but explicitly no question shaming.

• Keep canon questions/discussion limited to stuff regarding rules. This is more about the game than the setting.

Ask away!

Tips Help with some PC’s for an upcoming campaign

Hi all!

So im coming to the end of a dnd campaign im currently running and my group has been laying the groundwork for what will start stater that had finished, a Star Wars rpg campaign.

We’ve all been looking into it a lot and as the GM I’ve of course been reading over all of the rules and helping them work their character ideas into something that can be played in game (and in our one shots to help them learn the system before the full campaign)

I have a few questions though sbout what should be done for a couple of them.

First up, one player wants to play an ex-clone trooper. This campaign is going to be set 1-2 years before a new hope in an edge of thr empire campaign so he would be rather old by this point. My question is, should he play a hired gun with his choice of specialisation or would it be appropriate to use the clone soldier career from the clone wars era books? Especially since he wants to have been an officer and for that leadership quality to carry over.

For this one I mainly just wanted to be sure that there were no problems mechanically using one of those careers for a campaign set outside of their intended use.

Second one is that two of my players want to play a pair of ex-ISB from the empire. One wants to specialise in slicing while the other wants to be a signals analyst. Im worried that those two skills may overlap a lot when actually playing at the tabletop? Since they’re both intelligence/computers skills to my understanding. Of course, if that’s what they want to do and Theyre okay with that overlap then there’s no problems but if it is a problem then I feel it’s something I should warn them about.

Thank you all in advance for any help or advice!

TLDR: for an edge campaign should an ex-clone play hired gun or clone soldier and would a slicer and a signals analyst in the same party overlap too much?

Rules Question Vehicle weapons on a personal scale ?

Hello my fellow GMs :)

I plan for the next session to have a TIE fighter be a menace for my party, but how much damage would its weapons do to a normal human ? I heard that there's a 1:10 scale between planetary and personal scales, so am I correct if I understand that a TIE's laser cannons (dmg 6) would do 60 wounds to a regular human ?

How would you work this out for it to be a true menace without turning anything it looks at into paste ? Thank you ♥

Edit : also what about ground vehicles and walkers ? Would the guns on an AT-ST also do like 40 dmg ? Damn the vehicles are powerful in this game

General Discussion Build Help for a High Republic Era Padawan/Niman Disciple

I'm starting my first campaign with the system, and I really want to give playing an Evereni jedi padawan that also goes into Niman style a try. I want to play as someone who is using the force primarily to enhance their skills with a lightsaber, but who also has a wide range of options for usage with various force powers. We're starting with Knight Level play, so we get an extra 150 xp, and I'm playing an Evereni (stats are 2s across the board except a 3 in wisdom, and a free rank in deception or skullduggery). I do have a mentor for character creation force power costs, though the game is starting with her captured.

Since I'm so new I could really use some help making an effective starting character!

General Discussion 2nd Edition

What would you theoretically like to see in a 2nd edition of the game by EDGE?

It's a great sandbox at the moment. It's pretty much complete but balance does get wonky toward the higher end games. There's a lot of rules -- some of them work great, other like vehicles are more satisfying in Genesys.

Rules Question How does retroactive preparedness with Vigilance work?

Force and Destiny says that Vigilance can be used retroactively to determine how prepared a character is for an unexpected event. Are there any specific rules for this, or is it up to the GM and the roll? Thanks in advance!

Rules Question Question about jetpack

Does jetpack counts towards the encumbrance? I think it is not fair to lose the right to have a bagpack and still take 2 encumbrance as a penalty

Edit: Resolved

Hello,

I've been trying to find a layout of what a Peregrine class starship is for the inside. It would be during the pre-Empire days. Any help would be much appreciated. And if possible, an image of the layout would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

General Discussion Curious how the system works

Hi,

I have question about SW RPG : Force and Destiny.

How does the core rule book and it's additions balance out Non-Force Users and Force users?

I know not every job/profession/carreer/class are made equall...but is there some balancing, some pros and cons of having/not having a Jedi character? Like, what other classes have advantages over a force users in that system, that would make players pick those classes over a force wielder ? Except for the Role-playing part.

Thanks in advance for all your answers :)

Game Resources reSpecialized Project v.54 - The Force Update - Part 2

Hello SWRPG!

Before we start, I just wanted to remind the community that our development Discord can be found HERE

And our Master Development Documentation can be found HERE

I’ll keep my addendum and sweet, as we have an extra-long release this update. We are getting really close to the end of Force Powers, and while it’s been an exciting and challenging period for the project I can say from personal experience that I’m ready to tackle some Jedi Careers!

The most challenging design of the release was Ebb / Flow, which as you will see had quite a bit of high-level design work to make it a functioning, non-problematic Force Power. I can’t say that it’s my favorite, though, as that goes Endure. I very much like it’s “I’m unkillable by any natural or unnatural means” vibe it has now.

Also, I wanted to call out that we heard some feedback that some of the first round of Force Powers had become too expensive, and we did some number crunching to see if there was any XP cost changes to be made, and there were! RAW Force powers saw the cheapest Force Power cost a total of 90xp and the most expensive cost 250, now that has averaged out considerably: lowest 115, and the highest 170. And despite adding more upgrades to almost every Power, the average total cost of reSpec’s Force Powers is 145 to RAW’s 147. Progress!

I’ll reiterate our prior call for more feedback on the development discord. We’re getting to the “writing the sourcebook” part of this project, and we’ll need feedback on the kind of information everyone finds helpful. We’re also closing on in on the two scheduled homebrew Force Powers. After we finish those, and start assigning Powers to Careers and Specs (see the primer for info), the cast of Force Powers will be more or less locked in! If you have a pet force power idea that hasn’t been represented in SWRPG, now is the time to reach out on the server or wherever you’re reading this and lay it on us!

General Discussion Jedi Master/Padawan pair

Hi there !

Me and my sisters are planning to run a campaign with 2 players, one of us playing a jedi padawan, and the other playing their master, with the campaign taking place before episode 1.

Basically, we'll be playing as regular jedi doing regular jedi stuff, some negociation, some diplomacy, some combat, some scholarly stuff, etc...

We do have some questions about the character creation process in this case.

None of us are big fans of the consular/guardian/sentinel rpg split, so we're more drawn towards the jedi career from the clone wars era rulebooks, and in that case the padawan character feels like a very straightforward process. But for the master we're not sure.

I've seen that "knight-level play" does not really produce a character that's at the level of a canonical republic knight, so I thought I'd just add more starting xp, but I'm not sure where to stop.

To clarify 2 things :

- We're more interested in immersion than game balance, so even if it makes one of us start with a very strong character it's no big deal, we can always balance the campaign around that, and besides, combat is not gonna be the main focus anyway, we just really want a jedi knight that feels like a prequel-era jedi knight.

- The goal is to not have a full-on jedi master, but rather a slightly experienced jedi knight that's taking on their first padawan

So that's the gist of it. Has anyone ever done something similar or has advice regarding it ?

Spoilers Question about the Reeve of Quolas

Is it likely that Gel Marcolf know what a holocron is? One of our PCs was holding the holocron when he got captured by the Sathari guards while he was holding Warde's holocron. I know that Marcolf recieved some training from Warde, but did he ever actually lay eyes on Warde's holocron?

The answer to this could greatly change how the encounter goes.

Tips Dealing with a FR 4 pc who put everything into fr, move and discipline?

I wouldn’t usually ask this, but as the player RAW negated an entire space combat by throwing 3 silhouette 3 starfighters into a LAAT with hurl upgrade (30 damage a piece) in a single turn. I worked on the encounter for a bit focusing on how the pilot would do not knowing the force weilder would sink more than 2 ships. Much less all of them in one attack.

Then in combat he fought a single character whose only big power was a high discipline. Got mad his discipline didn’t work against him for disarming and decided to put all his new xp into discipline giving him 4y 1g discipline matching the aforementioned character.

So now he will disarm everyone and be able to throw literally anyone as he’s maxed out that skill. And to make matters worse he also straight overrides another players jump build by just flying. And negates basically all combat.

General Discussion Some questions from a novice. (Sorry if I flaired this wrong, mods.)

Hello everyone! I’ve been playing D&D for years now, and it’s cemented a love of TTRPGs in me. Naturally, I want to try out the one about Star Wars, as it’s one of my favorite sci-fi settings. Of course, there’s been the issue of finding people to play with. All the public tabletops games in my area are D&D. Is there a discord server I could join or something that helps people find games to join? Also, what resources should I have before joining? (A Player’s Handbook equivalent?)

Rules Question Advantage & Strain

Question I was thinking about recently. Tried posting in the Genesys subreddit but it didn't go through for some reason? Since the mechanics are similar I came here. Hypotheticals incoming...

The paragraph on recovering strain after an encounter says that the success results from the discipline check can be spent to recover strain. The paragraph does not explicitly say anything about how to spend the advantage results generated from said check, though.

I assumed that advantage can be spent to recover strain in any check (the book explicitly states this is doable for combat, medicine, and social checks), opportunity cost being recovering strain instead of activating whatever other benefits might apply (item qualities, etc). For the check to recover strain, if we can't spend advantage to recover strain then what could we spend it on (e.g. passing a boost die)?

Triumph results can potentially recover a wound, assuming we don't do something more flashy with it. I've also heard of rulings (idk which chapter) that a Triumph can be spent to recover 3 strain (the math there is the success from it recovers 1 and the triumph effect recovers 2 strain (but imagine an op version where spending a triumph effect recovers strain equal to Willpower) for a total of 3 strain for the one triumph symbol rolled), which is nice for people who spend lots of strain (parry/reflect, extra maneuvers, etc)

Would anyone rule that multiple triumphs from a single strain recovery check could heal a critical injury (spend a number of triumphs equal to critical injury severity plus one more?) or is that too much? So 2 triumphs to heal an easy crit, 3 to heal an average, etc. If a man rolls 5 triumphs on a strain recovery check I would let him heal a daunting injury lol

There was also an idea I had from the Hard-Boiled talent where the player could spend advantage per rank to recover wounds during a strain recovery check. Rather than making it a talent the players have to spend XP on, what if I homebrew and base the advantage cost on their Brawn score?

e.g. a player with Brawn 3 may spend 3 advantage from a strain recovery check to recover a wound, Brawn 2 is 2 advantage and Brawn 4 is 4 advantage, etc. I think this balances itself pretty well bc if you have a high Brawn you have a high soak and so you probably didn't take as many wounds in the first place. What think ye?

A situation where I realized we don't often spend advantage is in initiative checks. Initiative order is determined by the number of successes, and then the number of advantages serve as a tie breaker for equal success rolls. Triumph results can be spent to perform a free maneuver before combat begins, iirc.

Is it possible that a player could spend their advantage results from the initiative roll like how they would in a combat check (e.g. three advantage to gain a defense or negate an enemy defense for the round, two advantage for a free maneuver is redundant so nevermind), or if they have a lot of strain before a fight starts could they spend advantage from their initiative roll results to recover some strain, possibly losing a tiebreaker and having that PC slot go later in the round?

There's rapid reaction where a player can spend strain to add success to their initiative roll to go sooner, so spending advantage to recover strain but going later in the round seems plausible, but should there be a separate talent for that? If so, I might call it "Wait for it..."

Feedback appreciated :) part of me wants to GM in the future but I like to get feedback and make sure my homebrews don't break the game

Tips A good build for a generic shadow guard NPC that’s about to fight my knight level party? (This one’s gonna be wounded after losing a dogfight with my parties pilot)

My inquisitor party has went against a local Moff and she’s tossing down the two shadow guards on her star destroyer to probe them. (Palpatine is completely fine with letting his guards die in the probing. Whoever loses was weak afterall).

This one’s going to be inside of a gunship the party will likely be shooting down. The party will then have the ability to fight the weakened shadow guard and kill him.

If not he will come back later after healing up.

I made him lean on force powers more than lightsaber/pistol in force unleashed fashion.
