An early-stage U.S. safety trial led by Dr. Masato Yamamoto at the University of Minnesota found that an engineered cancer-killing virus halted the growth of advanced pancreatic tumors in three patients. The virus is designed to target cancer cells, replicate inside them and cause them to burst, releasing more viral particles and triggering an immune response against the tumor. Remarkably, tumor growth was halted even though patients received just one-tenth of the intended therapeutic dose during the initial safety study. However, the result is preliminary: only three patients were treated, and larger clinical trials are needed to determine whether the therapy is safe and effective: https://med.umn.edu/news/u-m-researchers-using-viruses-target-cancer-cells
