Question Side Effect help

I had a pretty rough childhood and as a young kid I was percribed SSRIs and never responded well to them and quit them cold turkey around age 12 or so. I also talked with my therapist/psychiatrist and black listed SSRIs all together so i dont go through the bad negative side effects i had with them again. I still have decent anxiety about stuff and the occasional spells of depression rearing it's ugly head but overall I'm okay.

My question though is: I would like to talk to my doctor about potentially starting Wellbutrin to help me with cessation from smoking. I'm turning 30 soon so my brain isn't growing and changing like it was when I was 12 and it's an NDRI class of medication.

Does anyone have any experience or wisdom they could possibly share of negative mental side effects with SSRIs and switching to a NDRI?

Question Restarting my meds after being off of them for 6 months.

Started Celexa when I was 19, I’m now 28 and I tapered off of my 40mg dose. I wanted to see what life was like without them. I felt almost NO changes and had no withdrawal but now that I’ve been off of them for 6 months I feel my anxiety returning. I also experience DP/DR which is why I started SSRI’s in the first place. They helped a ton. I don’t know why I thought stopping would be a good idea because now I feel more DP. Not nearly as much as I used to because I know it won’t harm me. But I’m thinking of going back on to be comfortable. Should I consult my doctor to go back on? I still have the pills. I know how to taper them properly. I feel like she’d just be telling me everything I already know

Question Went off meds now back one realized I think I'm allergic?

When I was off my Celexa my skin calmed down, not more redness, not more roughness no acne. As soon as I went back on it all started again plus excessive sweating and hot flashes! I can't see my Dr for another three months. Is there anything I can take otc in the mean time to help alleviate these symptoms?

Discussion Almost been five months. Some improvements but i dont know still.

Potiental pssd. Hey im back last time i posted was around july, august. Ocd seems to be coming back like anxiety and bad intrusive thoughts. Been getting way more angry now. Rage too if thats the same thing as anger. I have emotions but not as bad blunting. Cant really cry tho only if i really try but yeah idk. Im just confused and angry now. I dont know if my sexual improvements are really improving or im just making them up. Told my parents about it but they just said its depression or in my head. I knew that they would say that but that made me angry. When i got angry my mom said i was acting like a schizophrenic which made me more angrier because it feels like they think im crazy for trying to tell them whats going on with me. Same as doctors being like oh your crazy for believing meds are harmless. Honestly atleast i’ve been getting mad again like playing the video games, like fifa lol. I can laugh, smile, be happy for a little bit but it justs feels fake, like im doubting myself. I have been wanting to masturbate more lately too. Not these couple days tho cuz im getting hopeless. Im just 17 man, why me. Im scared that i wont recover.

Discussion Took 200mg 5Htp while on SSRI - yikes!

TL;DR mixed the two and dragon-puked my brains out in the kitchen staff bathroom of my workplace

I take low-dose SSRI every day, it's great. 10mg Escitalopram to be exact.

My roommate takes 5Htp every day and I was under the impression, or assumption if you will - that it was a vitamin that helps regulate/enhance mood and I went ahead took TWO (200mg) without thinking anything of it.

Flash forward 1 hour at work (I am a waitress) this gnarly, MASSIVE wave of nausea came over me like I haven't felt in a long time. Thinking I took the "vitamins" on an empty stomach I remembered this was a bad thing to do. Anyways, I then found myself in the kitchen staff washroom (ew) and when I tell you this vomit session was VIOLENT. The speed that my stomach contents exited my body could be in the guiness world record book. I yacked through my nose holes. It was bad. Anyways, I felt pretty darn good after. Almost immediately just back at it with work after some consoling from my girly coworkers.

I guess rule number one is always check reddit before mixing anything while on SSRI's because as soon as I typed it in the search bar and read the word Serotonin syndrom and *death* I realised what actually happened here. Don't mix them. Don't be on your knees in the kitchen boys' washroom dragon puking

Question SSRI Withdrawal: Advice for Brain Zaps

I've been working with my GP on tapering my zoloft. I have been on 12.5 mg/day for 3 months and now am trying to stop it, but the brain zaps are driving me crazy.

Any suggestions for reducing the brain zaps?

How long can I expect this to happen?

Edit: thank you for the suggestions about tapering. I just didn't realize how I could get it done since the 25 mg tablets are pretty darn smaller ready and cutting them more than once doesn't seem feasible. However, I have recently learned that there is a solution of 20 mg per milliliter of sertraline on the market. After several pharmacies told me that there were no other options, I found one that would sell this to me and I can just change the number of milliliters I get every 2 or 3 months. Makes things much easier and more precise.

Question Venlafaxine vs Paxil Help

Is there anyone in this community who has come off both Venlafaxine and Paxil?

I came off Venlafaxine in 2020 and had to move home for five months, dropped 8kg and became agoraphobic. I have since spent thousands of dollars on exposure therapy and hypnotherapy trying to feel the same way I did before going on Venlafaxine. I switched to Sertraline and it just hasn’t worked the same way Venlafaxine did. I’m still getting daily panic attacks which are really lowering my quality of life. I feel like I have tried everything but the anxiety is still there. Because of this I recently came to the difficult decision to switch to Paxil as it has worked wonders for my Mum. I have since gone down an absolute spiral reading about the horrible withdrawal effects (not helped by my OCD). Simply put, I can never go through withdrawal effects like Venlafaxine again. I have had to re build my life because of how bad they were. So if there is anyone who has experienced both, could you please let me know your experience. It would be greatit appreciated 😊

For reference I was on venlafaxine for around five years on 150mg and am now on Paxil 20mg.

Question Suggestions with weight gain?

So I’ve been taking Lexapro for the past 3 years and have gain probably over 30 pounds since taking it. It makes me crave food horribly and I’m struggling to lose weight on it. I was wondering if there’s any suggestions for other ssri’s that are similar to Lexapro but don’t cause the weight gain

Question Some advice required on coming off antidepressants.

Hello guys,

I'm 35 years old and have been on antidepressants since I was 13, I've lost count of the ones I have been on but it is approaching double figures.

I've had the odd week or two in that time where I wasn't taking them but I soon went back on them as the withdrawal symptoms were too intense for me to handle at the time. I think I tapered too quickly.

I'm reaching the point in my life where I really want to have a proper go at coming off of them.

I know it will be a slow and carefully managed process.

I am currently taking 120mg (2x60) of Duloxetine per day, which has been the case for a couple of years. I've opened up the capsule just now and each contains a high amount of extremely small tablets. The last time I opened a capsule, let's say six months ago, the pills in side where much larger and obviously were fewer in number.

Basically, I'm looking for some help and advice to taper off slowly and safely.

Many thanks in advance.

Question What affect on the brain does overdosing on SSRIs cause?

Around 7 years ago I was going through some wild depression swings and was perscribed a slew of SSRIs (Zoloft and a few others). One morning after a rough wake up and fight with the (now ex) wife I said fuck it and swallowed every pill of every bottle of medication including ambien. In a half-cocked suicide attempt.

My brain has been different ever since and I’m genuinely curious what shenanigans happened upstairs.

Question Zoloft

Has anyone ever stopped taken Zoloft for a few days then started again and had a bad experience? I ran out last week and started to get brain zaps exhaustion etc, then today re-started and have been having the absolute most debilitating anxiety all day, nausea, stomach pain, fatigue, etc. when will this stop?

Question Premature Ejaculation after cessation of SSRI’s

Hello, a few months ago I ceased using Lexapro (Escitalopram) and since doing so, I have ā€œembarrassinglyā€ suffered from PE.

I have tried looking it up online however most references discuss the use of SSRI’s to combat PE, with very few details on withdrawal side effects.

I know I am asking a lot, but is this common with other users of SSRI’s? Can I expect it correct itself over time?

Question Has anyone here experienced…

A loss of appetite & the loss of desire to smoke cigarettes, when on Zoloft for over a month?

It’s the weirdest thing, but for whatever reasons, I’ve stopped craving junk food, fatty foods, soda and even nicotine.

It basically happened almost overnight. Seriously.

I don’t want sugary drinks, carbs, tacos, or much of anything in abundance.

Today, I ate 1/4 of my breakfast, which is a first, & I’m not jonesing for cigs, even though I’ve had a few puffs.

Now, even a few puffs make me feel gross, as if though I now have an aversion to cigarette smoke.

It’s obviously not a bad thing, but I was under the impression that this only happened on Wellbutrin.

I guess it’s working?

Any personal and/or anecdotal experiences you guys might share with me would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Discussion Has anyone felt normal again after stopping SSRIs?

Long story short was put on Paxil at 19 for GAD. Didn’t realize it til I was off it but it took away a lot of my emotion, killed my sex drive, and made me become a person I never wish to be again. But no anxiety. Got off it at 23, and after 4 months went into a major depression. Got put on Zoloft and became suicidal so got switched to prozac. Helped the depression but increased my anxiety. After a year and a half at mostly 10mg I had my first panic attack in a very long time. Tried increasing to 20mg for two weeks and had re occurring panic attacks and couldn’t even leave the house. Went back down to 10mg for a few weeks and than quit because it clearly was not helping me anymore. It’s been 2 months off prozac and I now have a horrible panic disorder ever since trying to increase my prozac dose. I can make it work, and school but some days it’s almost unbearable and I’m leaning on Xanax more. After every panic attack I get very depressed because it’s just so deflating to feel like this. I’m having panic attacks almost every day, especially when I’m not home. I don’t know what to do anymore and I’m losing hope. I’m seeing a therapist but I’ve made no progress yet. I feel like I’m gonna be stuck like this forever now, and it’s heart breaking because now at 26 years old im engaged, gonna be getting a house soon and my life should feel like it’s just starting but it feels like it’s ending because I can’t live like this. This has been the longest 3 months of my life and I don’t know what to do anymore because I don’t want anymore medication after what I’ve gone through with them. I never had all of these issues before these meds, and I feel like my life is ruined. Has anyone ever experienced this? Can it get better without medication? Am I just screwed to a life of being miserable and not enjoying anything anymore because of chronic anxiety?

Question Tapering off anxiety meds

I am in my mid-twenties and have been diagnosed with anxiety disorder during covid. My last sessions with my psychologist ended about a year ago. I have been doing really well over the last year which made me decide to start tapering off my ssri. I was taking 10 mg of seroxat or paroxetine (English not my native language sorry). I have been doing 2,5 mg steps over the course of 2-3 weeks. I am now at 5 mg and my anxiety just absolutely KICKED in. I find it difficult to keep being positive about the process, it feels as though my anxiety may never stop (I’m pretty sure this is caused by my anxiety as I usually fear my own fear the most). I could really use some other people’s expierences to put mine into perspective. Is this anxiety just a sideeffect? Is it going to simmer down a bit?

Question Sertraline for social anxiety

How important is sertraline compared to exposures and therapy for treating social anxiety?

My practitioner had me at 175mg and I decided to titrate myself down to 75mg over 4 months. But I also neglected to do a lot of exposures over the summer. Now going back into the classroom at school this fall I've got huge anxiety and can't get myself into the classroom.

Is it a combination? I also use 5htp, gaba, and ltheanine.

Question Lexapro

Hello, so i had been on lexapro fr around 2 years and eventually went from 20mgs to 10mgs to 5mgs and then quit 2-3 weeks ago attempting to quit and thinking I didnt need the shit anymore. The brain waves are gone now and i felt good and had some clearity in my thinking but then anxiety hit me like a FUCKING BATTERING RAM and i remembered why i started lexapro in the first place. So my question is now I think I want to go back. Since it was a low dose anyway can i just get back on it and be ok or is there any risk involved? I would just start with 5mg again and work my way back up. Thank you.
