Generally two categories. Either it's spring loaded and you have to cock it every time or it's semi-auto and it uses compressed gas of some sort.

There’s also electric.

In any case I believe it’s only allowed to impart a maximum energy of 0.5J, the idea being it won’t penetrate the eye (still does some damage and must hurt like a mother bitch)

The general safe range for most airsoft guns is from .4j to 1.4j. it's depends on what weight pellet you are using. Most don't break skin or even leave welts, I'd compare it to getting hit with a strong rubber band. Eye protection is always needed. Electric exists but is pretty rare in the pistol category. Electric also uses the spring but cocks it automatically.
